West Carrollton High School PIRATAN 1979 Through the passage of Life, Stand together yet grow not in each other’s shadow. High School is the whirl of fall leaves swirling across a road at the twilight of our school year. It’s walking down the halls wondering if you will run into Mrs. Russell. It’s buying all the latest fashions. It’s meeting friends, watching the winning touchdown and experiencing the thrill and sweat of a locker room. High School is cramming for exams, that you’d rather forget. It’s a shiny class ring that catches the light, and a senior key that opens the door to the future. High School is growing up and preparing for life. Passages 5 6 Passages Passages 9 A Touch Of Hollywood Spotlights West Carrollton At the game, the 1978 Homecoming court waded through puddles of mud to be honored at midfield. After the pagentry of the parade and pre-game concluded, the mighty Pirates took the field to sink the Vikings from Miamisburg in a 21-6 spine-chilling game. Spectators began to file from the stands to escape the returning rain. Some left to prepare for the dance; others just to relax. The contrasts of the 1978 Homecoming festivities made it a true success. This was a time for much happiness as the mighty Pirates were victorious over Trotwood. This was also a time for sadness as the seniors realized it was their last home football game. This was a time for reflections of all the victories and defeats of the four years that led to this night. This was a time to reminisce about good times, loyal friends, and pleasant memories. This was a time for the families, as well as the seniors, to share these moments together. This was a time to project our thoughts into what the future might hold for each of us. 48 A Time For Us This page: Top to bottom: Mr. Westfall leads in the singing of the National Anthem. Winter Wonderland 59 Hoopsters ’79 The Pirate Hoopsters had a great season this year. They broke their long and ever haunting losing streak. They defeated our arch-rival Miamisburg in a game that won’t be forgotten for some time. The basketball team can contribute this to their coach Jim Turvene, to the dedication of the players, to their ability to work under pressure, like the team did when they won the Miamisburg and Fairborn games. The most important asset of the Pirates was the spirit of the crowd, at pep assemblies, home and away games, and especially at the Miamisburg game. The reserve team Finished their season with a 3-15 record. The team was said to have great potential by Coach Stafford. Leading rebounder was Mark Parriman. Best foul shooter was Rob Tyler, and leading scorer was Mark Parriman. 60 Varsity Basketball OPPOSITE PAGE LEFT TO RIGHT - The familiar sight of Barry Elkins at the tip off. Wrcstling 65 •«g CRRROllTON Competition ’79 Whether it be football or speech, it’s competitive spirit which makes Pirates excel in their chosen areas. For some it doesn’t matter if it’s for a varsity letter or just for fun. In this year’s intramural finals, it was the Reidens and the Bultman Boys in the finals. The Bultman Boys came out victorious. In more serious competition, the Debate team made it to the State finals and came out in fourth place out of 15 other teams. The Car-rolltones had their own competition invitational and put on a great show of talent. The whole student body at W.C.S.H. appreciates and admires the hard work and dedication of these teams. 66 Competition '19 The fans of W.C.S.H. play a big role in supporting our Pirate teams. With their enthusiasm they keep the teams fired up whether they’re winning or losing. The many parents and student body members that make up the crowds not only support the teams with spirit but make contributions by buying the raffle tickets, programs, jackets, cushions, and being patrons. Spring Candids 77 Spring Captures The Courtyard Spring has finally hit at West Carrollton High School and once again the courtyard doors were unlocked. Students spent their free time and their lunch hours lounging in the grass, talking among themselves, and of course, goofing off. A lot of times the courtyard was a quiet place to study or to soak up some sun. Students didn’t seem to mind the heat outside compared to the heat of the classrooms. But the courtyard was always a place to take a break from the busy school day. 78 Courtyard Opposite page left to right, top to bottom: Rob Tyler down in the pit. Softball ’79 The Girls’ Softball Team has had a very rewarding season. The girls showed great sportsmanship. They cheered each other on and always had a good time. They spent long hard hours of practicing and their team record showed it. They felt that their attitude towards each other was their secret to success. Coach Laycox and Coach Reed did a great job of keeping the girls together and teaching them to play as a team. They had six varsity players return from last year who showed good leadership. Woody Price 105 Baccalaureate And Graduation “I can say without reservation that this has been the best year I have had since becoming principal, ... To best describe for you this 1979 class, I use such descriptors as leadership ..is how Mr. Pack presented the class of 1979. Leadership is indeed one of the many qualities of the class. Even though there were leaders, everything at graduation was voted on by the class. A few of the issues voted upon were whether or not the girls were to wear corsages; how and where the diplomas were to be presented. There were four excellent speeches given by some of the ‘elected’ classmates: Ann Carl — “Maybe Tomorrow”; Kyle Heck — “One World Revisited”; Woody Price — “A Different Drummer”; and Larry Hartzell — “Waiter, Bring Me A Winner”. All the speeches related, in some way, to the class of ’79. The selection chosen for the Senior Ensemble was “Dream A Dream”. Diplomas were awarded to the graduates by Mrs. Pat Russell and Mrs. Jackie Mann. The processional and the recessional were played by Mr. Patterson. 106 Baccalaureate And Graduation Other Page — L. This year’s Senior Class Officers truly exemplified the meaning of the word “leadership.” In describing the class officers, leadership is only a part of what they have achieved for the Senior class. They are very active and have shown this by sponsoring the Gong Show, Senior Talent Show, selling t-shirts, and working extremely hard at Homecoming and Prom. From the class of 1979 to the class officers of 1979, we thank you for making our year a very memorable one. L. Marriott, secretary; B. Helmick, treasurer; W. Price, president; J. Snell, senator; B. One More Look Back In Time — The Year In Review Before you close the pages of this Piratan yearbook or another chapter in your life, let us take one photographic look back at the seasons and spirit, friendships, emotion, vitality, love, and growth that existed among the people of Carrollton High. The next few pages are devoted to the years 1978-1979 and dedicated to you, the people who took the time to leaf through these pages remembering the laughter and the tears of this year. Let us now begin our passage back ... 228 Passages 230 Autumn Spring 235 236 Spring Spring 237 Linda Sims Thoughts On Friendship “There is nothing in this whole world Lord, like having one true friend ... Just one true enjoyable, understanding friend. No one is ever so lonely that he doesn’t have a friend. To Find one, all you have to do is go out and help somebody. Now and then say to a friend “I love you.” Those words weren’t meant for sweethearts. They are just as significant, beautiful, and life-enhancing when said to a dear friend. A true test of friendship: If you died, which of your friends would you trust to clean out your drawers? When I talk, my friend listens; when my friend talks, I listen. That’s one of the reasons we’re friends. Friends are like bracelet charms. If you truly love and enjoy your friends, they are a part of the golden locket that makes life good. If you want more friends, “smile” more. I’ve never known anyone who smiled a lot, who didn’t have a lot of friends. Friends are too precious to lose, even when they disappoint us. Lord, help me to forgive this friend, if only because I’d want her to forgive me. Friends are worth forgiving. Larry Creager “One of the most important things about myself is that 1 make friends easy. I am easy to get along with, and I am an individual in my own way ... But most of all, I like my friends a lot because they really help me do things and see what I am doing wrong, and they help me make them right.” — Larry Creager Linda and Larry are with God, and if we believe that God is in each of us, then Linda and Larry are not far away. — Ken McCollum “This letter is respectfully dedicated to the memory of Larry Creager. It’s also dedicated to you — the remaining 1,194 students at West Carrollton High School. As teachers we have no right to demand that you accept our values. We do however, enjoy the privilege of loving you and pray that search for acceptance and identity will be tempered by a good degree of moderation and planning. Go cautiously as you search for your version of this complicated thing called “life”. Carefully — slowly — You have a lot of time — No Hurry. We love you — Larry We love you — “1,194” Larry Crcagcr 239 240 Passages “Time has told its story true of happy high school days And as we students come and go the spirit always stays. Carrollton High! Carrollton High! All honor to our school And through the years we’ll ne’er forget our own West Carrollton High.” 4 Ss
