Sixty-three members of the 1971-72 Pirate football squad made an outstanding effort for a successful season. Although the Pirates fell short of their mark, general opinion was that this was the most unified team West Carrol-ton had in years. Team and staff felt winning attitudes during pre-season scrimmages. Injuries stalemated the team in the first games, and they never seemed to get back to their feet. Close calls were common. Pirates ended up with nine losses but put their potential together to defeat Eaton for the big homecoming Victory. At season's start the squad was two-thirds rookies. original three senior letterman to lead a team of seven junior letterman and rookies. A serious knee injury, during the first plays of the Burg Game, forced Captain Steve Weaver to leave the team until mid-season. Able to return, Steve achieved Scholar Athlete and Best Defensive Awards. In the offensive punch, Jeff Herbst led rushing, while Rob McGarvey captured the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award. On the defensive squad, Eric Herman handled business up front and picked up the most tackles on the team. In the secondary, Steve Gauldin led the team with the most interceptions. whats red and black and bruised all over
