Sixty-three members of the 1971-72 Pirate football squad made an outstanding effort for a successful season. Although the Pirates fell short of their mark, general opinion was that this was the most unified team West Carrol-ton had in years. Team and staff felt winning attitudes during pre-season scrimmages. Injuries stalemated the team in the first games, and they never seemed to get back to their feet. Close calls were common. Pirates ended up with nine losses but put their potential together to defeat Eaton for the big homecoming Victory. At season's start the squad was two-thirds rookies. Mid-season two seniors joined the original three senior letterman to lead a team of seven junior letterman and rookies. A serious knee injury, during the first plays of the Burg Game, forced Captain Steve Weaver to leave the team until mid-season. Able to return, Steve achieved Scholar Athlete and Best Defensive Awards. In the offensive punch, Jeff Herbst led rushing, while Rob McGarvey captured the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award. On the defensive squad, Eric Herman handled business up front and picked up the most tackles on the team. In the secondary, Steve Gauldin led the team with the most interceptions. whats red and black and bruised all over the beat goes on Yeah, the beat goes on Drums keep pounding rhythms to . . . The Pirates scored 67-53 but forfeited due to an ineligible player. With new blood in the first string. Pirates annihilated Trotwood 69-62, Butler 66-55, North -mont 93-60, and handed our arch rival, Miami s-burg, two defeats with the scores 71-45 and 71 -55. Pirates were not to be denied the league championship. They won it and attained the almost impossible--an undefeated record in league action. The Pirates finished the regular season with a 15-3 record and were rated by the JOURNAL HERALD as the fourth team in the AAA Class in the area. Team Pictures: RESERVE (L. TO R. )-R. Sumpter, M. L. championship with an almost impossible record of 9-0, the Pirates went into the tournament looking for victories against Wilbur Wright and John Carroll. The Pirates soundly trounced W.W. 102-70. Two days later, Carroll made its bid to upset the Pirates in front of 1600 on-lookers. But, the Pirates edged them 65-56 and earned the right to play Colonel White for the sectional champs. The Pirates won the next two games against Colonel White and Roosevelt, with the scores of 68-59 and 75-64. The most important game of the year was played between the only two remaining teams in the area. W. C. and Fairmont West battled it out for the right to play in the regionals in Cincinnati, and to continue to the state championship. But that tragic day the Pirates were upset by Fairmont West. In that game, the Pirates playmaker, Neil Dekker, was injured and couldn't play up to his usual par. The Pirates lost 70-46 and ended the season 20-3. wrestlers overcome inexperience Injuries and inexperience plagued the Pirate grapplers this season with only three returning varsity lettermen. Coach Thayer and Coach Dolph led them to a dual meet record of 4-5. In die Belmont Invitational, thirteenth place in the U. D. Invitational, and second place in the Northridge Invitational, in which Mike Wilds placed first. This year's Most Valuable Player was co-captain, Mike Wilds in his first year of varsity competition. Most improved was co-captain, Doug Greenlee, while the Outstanding Junior was Rick Mislan. Ted Smith was honored as the Outstanding Sophomore, winning more matches than any other sophomore ever has on the W. C. wrestling team. They walked over Oak-wood with a score of 12-4, annihilated Eaton 10-4, edged Princeton of Cincinnati 4-1, and disseminated Miamis-burg 4-0. Coached by Mr. John Moran and led by Stan Davis, the Pirates used every, pitch, swing, and catch to help win the league's all sports honors. Jeff Barnes, Terry Guel-tig, and Neil Dekker combined efforts to defeat many teams. The Pirates, however, were not a foul weather team. The team did not really function on those many terrible days in early spring when snow and rain forced cancellations. BASEBALL TEAM, (TOP TO BOTTOM LEFT TO RIGHT) Coach Maxton, D. Fletcher, B. On the job they apply the skills they have learned for a future career. In their clubs they get together for various social functions. All three of these organizations are involved in many activities ranging from running the bookstore to being school secretary to contests.
