A s C H O O L middlevilie Newport lewvork Foreword The 1956 Wecava is an index of success-our success at completing twelve years of education. But we are not content to rest upon our laurels. Our motto, Not at the top, but climbing, best expresses our belief. As the yearbook explains, only after students have participated in intellectual and social organizations have they experienced one type of growth. West Canada has trained us successfully during our high school careers. It has laid the ground work for our success and has opened many opportunities for us. After graduation the individual's success depends upon his own ambition, resourcefulness, and ability to make use of his previous training. May our success truly be an inspiration to those following us. We are especially inspired by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Salz- burg genius, whose music has communicated divine truths for two hun- dred years. His feeling for beauty, his eagerness for learning, his earnestness in studying, provide thought-arousing goals for us to fol- iipgggfi eg HVJJJ v .1LlJ il Dedication Mr. Gustav Koch It is with pride that the Senior Class dedicates the WECAVA to the man who has given WEST CANADA its first Intervalley League Basketball Champi- onship in sixteen years, Coach Koch. He has not only coached the championship team, but has advanced the athletic department of the school immeasurably. His fearless leadership and his inspirational encouragement to all students are something that we shall long remember. Appreciation Mr. K. Daniels Mr. G. McConville We, the Class of 1956, wish to express our sincere appreciation and thanks to Mr. K. Daniels, our Sophomore and Junior Glass advi- sor, and to Mr. G. Mc Conville, our Senior Class advisor. We realize that both have made our last three years profitable, and that we can never repay the debt we owe for the time, energy, and advice they have given us. Therefore we take this means of expres- sing our sincere gratitude for their combined efforts. Vs FACULTY Vi gui JV! Q, 9' 4? HE, 9 F O X f ' x X XX If I, 'y. Senior Histor Now hear this! If for nothing else, we are distinctive for being the first class to be graduated from Newport School. Upon becoming the usual green Freshman, we hopefully started our long-awaited high school days. With the guidance of our advisors, Hrs. Carney and Mr. VomSaaJ, we began to make money for our Senior trip. We paid dues, sold magazines, and planned a basketball game. Our class officers were: Pres. Norman Gould, Vice Pres. Pat Putney, Sec. Jay Hard, Treasurer Robert Slater. Our Student Souncil Represen- tatives were Jane Miller and Edward Przestrzelski. Joanne Grimmer, from Little Falls, joined our class. In our never to be forgotten Sophomore year, we ordered our class rinqs. Miss Sharon and Mr. Daniels were our advisors, and we were still on our campaign to make money for our Senior trip by means of dances and magazine sales. Barry Franz, from Utica, joined us. Our class was led by Pat Putney as pres., Spike Gould well as secretary, and Stanley Zacek as treasurer. as Uveepgn Paul Max- As Joyful Juniors, we received COh!I Great day in the morningll OUR CLASS RINGS! With Mr. Daniels at the helm, we won the magazine campaign---Money!---and the Teddy Bear offered as a prize. Teddy was promptly named UKenny,W after you know who---for should it be whom?D Ne sold Christmas Cards and the candy we didn't eat, and sponsored dances. Bill Bitteker left to study for the priesthood, and Bucky Haight went to prep school. In January, Pudge Pomichter and James Snyder had enough credits to advance to the .Senior class, and they graduated a year ahead of us. But we gained Claire Moore from Utica. Later that same year, Stash ran as an Independent--and made it--presi- dent of the Student Council--and Claire was elected as the NVeep.W Finally the long-awaited prom-and if everyone there didn't have UStar- dustn in his or her eyes, it wasn't the fault of the theme. Class officers were: Bob Slater as pres.g Alma Gould as vice president, Linda Helmer as corr. sec., Janette MacPherson as recording sec.g Nor- man Gould as treasurer, John Snyder as student council representative. At last! Sophisticated Seniors!! And still trying to make money with Mr. McConville as our advisor. Work on the yearbook began. We sold magazines, had dances and sold Christmas Cards. Patricia Grzano- wicz was selected as Good Citizen and was awarded a D. A. R. Pin and certificate. Five of our seniors were members of the Championship Basketball Team, four of our girls were on the cheerleading squad. The Senior Play, UCurtain Going Uplln was presented. We were having dif- ficulty getting a male lead for the play due to soccer, so we had try- outs and picked Varnnm Harris. Joan Primeau and walt Miner were our much needed prompters. Another feature of our Senior year was the school store. Our class officers were: Robert Slater-president, Paul Maxwell-vice president, Patricia Crzanowicz-corr. sec., Janette Mac- Pherson-recording sec., Norman Gould-treasurer, John Snyder-student council representative. we are all lookinq forward to the future, and we hope that all of you following us will enjoy your last years in high school as much as we did. The main purposes of the Valley Echo, the bi-weekly of our school, edited by students under the leadership of Mrs. Smith, are to give jour- nalistic experience to students and to voice student opinion. All the classes and all the clubs of the school can submit news or other material to the Valley Echo for publication. Working on the Valley Echo is not only good journalistic experience but the members of the staff soon learn that only through oo- operation and team work can a good paper be published. Front row: J. Apart from the musical side, the Chorus has proven to be most interesting and benefi- cient. The quality of the music carries with it a deeper meaning than some Tin-pan alley literature, and the more serious sort of vocal music has a very definite preference. The good Chorus must be a balanced one, giving bAr.Davh1Reardon equal opportunity to those with high voices as well as to those with low ones. The group is rather small which enhances the aesthetic beau ty of choral singing. Clockwise: J, Snyder, S. Edwards, R. Slater, A. Gould, P. Grzanowicz. auonal Honor Society The National Honor Society has had a total number of 48 members since its organization in 1949. As membership is limited to Seniors only, election to this society is the highest honor that a student can receive during his school years. It represents the fundamental ob- jectives for which schools are instituted and gives recognition to those who have attained most nearly the desired end. Other honors at the disposal of the school are only partial in the sense that they rec- ognize specialized ability, skill, or talent, but this Society looks upon education as a total product measured by the four dirnensions of life, Throughout history, man has recognized the value of such distinction and in one way or another has marded for special honor those who ex- cel. To be a member of the National Honor Society the student must maintain an average of 8570 or above in scholarship and is rated by a faculty committee for character, service, and leadership. Basketball Our varsity this year consisted of seven veterans of the year before. They were Bob Slater, Stash Zacek, John Snyder, Paul Maxwell, Spike Gould,Charles Moody, and Burlin Atanasoff. This group along with several other members who were brought up from the Junior Varsity went on to compile one of the best records a West Canada team has ever had. In league competition, the boys had a record of 17 wins and one lone defeat suffered at the hands of Holland Patent in the first half of league play. This defeat was later avenged at Holland Patent in a thrilling 57 - 56 victory for our boys which meant the Intervalley League Championship for the first time since 1939 - l9hO. After league play was over our team went on to even greater heights in the Sectional Tournament by copping the Section lll CD crown at Syracuse against an Adams Center team from the Watertown area. The followin night our team suffer ed its second defeat of the 1955 - 1952 campaign at the hands of Norwich, Sec. lll AB champs by the fine score of AO - 39 which was decided in an overtime period. Hats off!! to a splendid West Canada team and also a fine group of boys who managed to acquire success through hard work and good cooperation. Front row! M. Briggs, 2nd row: S. Sobolowski, L.
