REFERENCE COLLECTION FOR USE IN THE LIBRARY ONLY BERKELEY PUBLIC LIBRARY BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA V f. m It 1 :fcr On behalf of the entire staff at West Campus, I would like to congratulate all the students who have contributed to making the year 1977-78 a pleasant and successful experience. I was particularly impressed with our students participating in Berkeley ' s Centennial Celebration. The Art classes, taught by Jan Valtr, did a tremendous job in decorating our school with murals and decorating city garbage trucks for the Centennial. Special thanks go to the Creative Writing classes and Publication classes for their outstanding publication the Times and the dedication of their faculty sponsor, Mrs. Holsing. My best wishes to the ninth graders who are going on to Berkeley High School, and I will look forward to seeing the seventh and eighth graders -next year. Kenneth W. The students ranged from begin- ing to advanced. For exam- ple, one student, Deris An- drews, plays many other instruments and composes music in addition to her work on the piano. - 69 ASM. This year ' s Asian Student Union, although it had some good goals, wasn ' t as suc- essful as its members wish- ed it had been. The ASU ' s main goal was to eliminate many Asian stereotypes. The ASU participated in a num- ber of things such as a Japanese festival in San Fransisco and a bake sale at school. 70 There were not enough candidates to have a student council election this year, but those candidates who met the academic and citizenship stan- dards were asked to serve on the coun- cil. The council did many things for the students including a bake sale, a St. Valentine ' s Day dance, a dom- ino and checker tournament, a St. Patrick ' s Day dance, a talent show, a trip to Great America, and an a wards day. Despite the lack of an election, the council members earned the ap- proval of the student body through their quality work. STUDENT COVNCIL Vote !!! CHESS This year Mr. Hughes sponsored a chess club which met every aay at lunch in Room 103. Two tournaments were held. Kathy Fong won the first, and, at time of press, the second tournament winner had not been de- cided . Chess Club Sponsor , Mr. Hughes CLUB Winners Robert Walker and Kathy Fong West Campus had a swim team which got underway in early February. Students from 7th, 8th, and 9th grades worked out after school for about an hour each day. Coach Agretelis had them swim up to 2,000 yards every day. In the spring the team competed against King Jr. High. The team, coached by Mr. Mitchell, had a good year. Everyone really enjoyed playing. Mr. Mitchell felt pleased with the team, and said he was happy with way the girls improved throughout the year. All in all, it was a fun year. 76 DEBATE This year, Joel Kaj i participated on the Berkeley High Speech and Debate Team. He competed in the Golden Gate Speech Association, which spans the Bay Area. There were weekly Saturday Tournaments where he did individual speaking and debate with his partner, David Braun, who attends Berkeley High. At one point in the year, the whole squad competed in Crescent City, where BHS won sweepstakes. When asked if he would continue, Joel replied, Sure , for the rest of my high school days. 77 Push-ups as punishment Water Polo The water polo class team met every school day during the normal lunch hour (i.e. 11:50 12:25). They competed against Junior Varsity (J.V. in the common vernacular), and the 9th graders from Berkeley High. Since water poloists had water polo in- stead of normal P.E., they ate lunch dur- ing the period they had P.E. the semester before. Hopefully, the next time they have a water polo class, it won ' t be so confus- ing. Jack (Sparky) Shaw taught the class, and, because an actual teacher was needed Ms. Agretelis supervised. They won their first 5 contests before dropping the last two. The high point of the season came when the Jack- ets beat Richview on the next to last play of the game with an 8 2 -yard touch- down bomb from Don Brooks to James Fer- guson. Keith Lawson was too much for most opponents to handle, with his power and open-field running ability. In one game, Keith rushed for an unheard-of 165 yards in only 5 carries. Despite some sparkling individual efforts, how- ever, it was a team effort which led the Jackets to their excellent mark. WC score Opponent Opp ' 2 54 Salesian 46 C. S. D. 18 28 De La Salle 0 34 C. What more can you say about a team that had a 14-0 record? A team whose leading scorer broke the school record, which was held by one of the best col- legiate players in the country? A team whose smallest margin of victory was nine points? The West Campus 9th grade basketball team, coached by Stelton Mitchell, had one of the best seasons in the history of the sport. In the game against Albany, Vince Washington scored 44 points and broke Gene The Dream Ransom ' s school record of 42. The Jackets took top honors in the St. Elizabeth Frosh Tournament, routing Encinal and perennially tough McCly monds , and coming from behind to beat Bishop O ' Dowd. Hervey Rogers puts up a shot. Over 200 students participated in the event. Except for the minor fact that the show was one and a half hours longer than expected , it was extremely well done. During the year both the advanced and beginning students had a Lunch Box Theater where other students could eat their lunch and watch various scenes for a dime. The drama classes held a spring open house, which was in the style of a two hour Lunch Box Theater . The students performed various scenes and musical numbers for their parents .
