4 Z4 U THE CLIMBER DEDICATION ym k : The Class of Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-Six of West Bridgewater High School proudly Dedicates its Yearbook to Mr. Ilium. Although you have only been with us a short while, your insight and guidance has already en- riched our lives. You have been responsible for and have personally helped us with many worthwhile programs in our Junior and Senior years and it is because of your interest and concern in us that we dedicate this, our 1976 CLIMBER, to you. FISHER Superintendent m mm w i SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS To The Class Of 1976: What a thrilling moment --completion of your first twelve years of formal schooling, less than one month before our Nation ' s 200th Birthday! Long as two centuries may seem in your history books, they have actually moved rapidly and never trouble free. Our democracy is still a very young type of government, successful in many ways, yet ever challenging. We have gone the route from great sacrifice and struggle to periods of prosperity and placidness, not once, but several times. Most re- cently we rushed through the prosperous post World War II years. Suddenly we were tragically jarred by the Wars in Korea and Vietnam and by the events of Watergate which culminated in the first resignation of a President. With all this, our government has survived and stayed on an even, though shaken foun- dation, an accomplishment not achieved by other governments strained by internal and external pro- blems. Democracy may still be the only type of govern- ment under which man can fail, suffer, and yet come back, stronger than ever. We Americans have done it. Our government obviously can ' t avoid set backs yet it leaves opportunity for a return to success. BUT it can ' t do it alone, it needs those magic ingre- dients so ably expressed by a widely read columnist, the late Mr. Walter Lippman; The elementary prin- ciples of work and sacrifice and duty --and the trans- cendent criteria of justice and righteousness are the things which have made men free. There ' s your challenge- -go out and show the World you can do it as our ancestors did two hundred years ago. Good luck and God Bless you. SCHOOL COMMITTEE Standing: D. Mclver; D. Raleigh, N. Palmieri, B. White, C. Barros; Seated: D. Fisher, Superintendent, G. Lepine, Chairman, G. Smith, Secretary PRINCIPAL TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1976: Never in your life time have you had brought to your attention with such acclaim, the heritage of your forefathers. For the past year or so you have constantly been exposed to celebrations, speeches and reenactments commemorating this nation ' s past. The emphasis that has been placed on the Bicentennial Commemoration has provided for all of you the opportunity to rekindle your pride in this great country ' s past and present. It is ironic and also sad that as you celebrate this nation ' s 200th Birthday that solutions to solving many problems of the past seem to have escaped your present needs. Undoubtedly, as you embark on your future course, the chal- lenge is going to be greater to you than it was for your predecessors. You need to be better prepared and equiped to realize the develop- ment of a wholesome and meaningful life. At West Bridgewater High School you have had a start in meeting this goal. I sincerely believe that if you look beyond those things which are strictly material in nature, that you will find in your heritage basic value systems that will be beneficial to your future. There is always the temptation to discard the past. DON ' T! It may hold the key to your future. Congratulations and sincere best wishes upon your graduation. Yours truly, S. To help our students to understand the word in its best uses-- literature; to parry it in its worst uses-- propoganda; to create new worlds with the word or to enlarge the inner -wo rid-- through reading and writing; to grasp the hand of our fellow man in word and play- - through speaking and drama: These are the purposes of education in the mother tongue among all free and civilized societ- ies, and so it is our aim in the schools of West Bridgewater.
