Never before has this been a greater problem than at present. You have been aware of some of the frustrations that must be overcome in today's society. You are approaching a world where decisions have to be made about problems which have never been solved before. It is my hope that you have had experience in decision making, during your school years, which will enable you to make reasonable judgements about the situations you will encounter. This is a most important aspect for schools, at this time, as the matters you will face are too complex and changing too rapidly to allow teaching all the experiences you will see. The consequence is that we attempt to show how to solve new problems and it will be your responsibility to equate the methods to the new developments in society. This is an awesome but enjoyable task with which I feel certain you are well prepared to cope. I hope that by now you have formulated your individual systems of values and at least some of your goals. That you may do this indicates that you have not only a personal privilege but also a responsibility. In order to be able to do your own thing you must expect tolerance on the part of others, and be prepared to be tolerant as well. I wish you luck. T. W. Calhoun Vice-Principal 10 Thomas G. Burdin, Jr Principal If I should be asked to name the most significent accomplishments that have taken place in our school system during the nine years that I have served in West Bridgewater I am certain that one of the most important took place during the evening of Monday, November 11, 1970. It was on that evening that a number of students, parents, school staff, and school committee members sat down together and really discussed some matters of mutual concern. You seniors played a major role in this meeting, yet even more important, the vast majority of you have since made a real effort to cooperate and to take leadership roles that have resulted in improved conditions in the school. The above came about slowly, which is not uncommon in a democracy, yet it was a Hrst step and I am confident that it will be followed by an ever improved mutual understanding of the needs and goals of contemporary secondary education. Perhaps this initial experience can serve as a guide for you in future years as you continue withyour studies, take jobs, and set up homes of your own. Also, you may get some encouragement from the old proverb, A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. Thank you for your many and fine contributions to our schools and our community. Good luck and God bless you. Donald A.
