Today man has advanced very n realization of his dream. Each generation has come closer to the stars because of the struggles of former generations. Each of us, too, dreams of reaching his own star, his cherished goal in life. For some it is a career or higher education: for others it is a pro- ductive job or a rewarding family life. Whatever our star may be, we know that even if the rocket of our life veers off course, we will be the wiser for making the attempt. I Youth will always reach out for the stars, the lofty goals and aims in life, as long as these ideals remain fixed and true overhead: for, as Browning said, A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for? The Far Reaches of the Universe A Farewell Message After many years of tireless and devoted service to the schools of our town, Mr. Mer- rill is about to enter upon a well-deserved retirement. For the time he has been with us, Mr. Merrill has constantly sought to im- prove, modernize and expand the curricular of our schools. Many of us have felt the bene- fits of his efforts during our own school years, and, even though we leave West Bridgewater High School at the same time he does, we look forward with excitement and interest to the continued growth of the physical as well as academic facilities of our school, for which he is so intrinsically responsible. We are grateful to him for the dignity and high ideals he has brought to his office, we offer him our unceasing respect and admiration, and we wish him all possible contentment and well-being for his future. The disciplined study of these subclasses, coupled with the student's outside experience in these areas, should en- able the student to interact successfully with his chosen environment. Mr. Robert Orr Mrs. John Colford LANGUAGES The students in the language departments read their stories and study their grammar, as always. The emphasis on French as a spoken language is evidenced by many records and tapes, using a variety of techniques and na- tive voices. Cultural research in Latin makes that subject all the more interesting. nsoy Oulu 5- PE .1L5 ',v .- ' I Y:':2:2J::':I:?5i:ZE'f1EffE25'9: -it ' Miss Ruth Sherry Mrs. Marie A. MUSIC AND ART school. Mr. William Rathbun Mr. Lewis holds a sectional rehearsal of the band. l Developing an ability for expression through tl essay. The Music Department endeavors to create in the students an appreciation of good music and to acquaint them with the great composers and musicians. This is accomplished by their listening to music, singing, learning to read notes and perhaps even culti- vating a dormant talent. An appreciation of music acquired in elementary grades is of great assistance in encouragnig the stu- dents to elect such activities as band, choir and orchestra in high The chief purpose of the Art Departmentli is to create in the student a desire to draw, design, mold-in short, to create a thing ofil beauty on his own. Through the first nine: grades the student is trained in making things with his hands, and in using his own imagina- tion, creativeness, and ideas. This early train- ing awakens him to the advantages offered by the high school Art Major course and helps to cultivate an interest in art as a possible career. V l 1, - 1 - M.. VA' . Folsom PRACTICAL ARTS The main purpose of practical arts in high school is not to make carpenters or cabinet makers of students, but to give them necessary instruction in the use of hand and machine tools, and to help them choose a pro- fession. This year shop has been available to students from the eighth to the twelfth grade. However, next year the addition of two new shops and a new mechanical drawing room will provide West Bridgewater High School with enviable facilities for the practical arts program. ll 2 X. x School Nurse Mrs. Clinton Howard STAFF l M l X Cafeteria Staff l l l P l I l Custodluns l Mr. Arvid Hagglund, Mr. .lack Large, Mr. Warren'1 Turner, Mr. Gordon Ross.
