Each teacher and each underclassman wish the best for this class. It is only fitting, then, that the CLIMBER be presented to the class as a memento of the days and hours that passed too quickly. The members of this class were born on the dark eve of Wforld War II as Hitler invaded Poland. Childhood play was mixed with news of Tunisia, Salerno and the Solomons. Adolescence heard the rumbling echoes from Seoul. As ma- turity beckons its spiny hand, a peace exists- with strings attached. God willing, the Class of 1956 will not ac- cept the abnormal as normal. May these students live to know a true peace. Today's generation cannot give it to themg it is too late. May they give it to themselves. Wfith this affirmation of faith in youth, this CLIMISIZR is proudly presented to the Class of 1956. We dedicate the 1956 CLIMBER to Mr. William Henry Moss who taught us the power of the English word, the depth of written thought, the nuance of the poetic phrase. He is more than a teacher. More than a man. He is a way of life. A p ieoiaroklfrio ' it I ws... We, the Class of 1956, have dedi- cated this book to Henry Moss, and, 6 for this reason, have chosen the -' Great Books as its theme. The Clas- I A G sics of the past are the core of his s r life, he has brought them to life for 2,5 . x 7 'K . ,f eleven graduating classes of this high .5 it if ,r school. And these books have shaped our lives, formed our ideals. From Aristotle we learned of logic and reality, from Chaucer, the earthiness of everyday life, from Shakespeare, an understanding of motivation and charac- ter, from Tolstoi, the compassionate forgiveness of our fellow man, from Wordsworth, a love of nature, from Churchill, the courage that lies beneath human frailty. , Our school life, too, has become a personal classic . . . we have written it ourselves. If the words are hazy or clear, the chapters 'muddled or ordered-it has been of our own doing. We have written finis and cannot rewrite a sen- tence-no, not a single word. But, with the feeling that comes with new ink and new paper, we begin a new chapter. May we write it well. You have made many sacrifices but remember that your parents have made greater ones. The time and effort which you spent in study and in other school activities will be rewarding only insofar as you extended yourselves. The experiences which you have encountered will be minor in comparison to those ahead. Rest assured that life is not easy. It is a con- stant battle against odds which, at times, will seem insurmountable. In all your endeavors be men and women of principle. Let the knowledge and skills which you have gained in the home and school be the tools of your success. Set your courses with the Light of Truth to direct you, with Determination to reach your goals, and with the Faith to guide you. Remember, too, as Will Rogers once said, It is great to be great, but it's greater to be human. May I extend to you my best wishes for success and happiness in all your undertakings. THE FACULTY . . . for accepting, without a murmur, the invasion of photographers upon the sacred territories of English, French, chemistry, and other educational processes. Your cooperation was deeply appreciated by this staff. MR. J. HARRINGTON, studio photographer, for his superb artistry in pro- ducing the fine art photography on the title pages. His judgment and sensitivity created the exquisite lighting that effected these photographs. MRS. GLADYS KEITH, secretary, for cheerfully announcing, day atter day, the monotonous words- There will be a Climber meeting in Room 11 at . . MASTER PAUL MONCEY, a fourth' grade student, for lending his collection of armored knights, ship models, and Greek pillars to the art staff. MR. EARL GIFFORD, father of our Marilyn, for lending us the antique pocketbook and rare coins seen on page 93. The collection of coins is a treasured family heirloom, and we appreciate the use of it. THE PARENTS, the fathers and mothers of staff members, for allowing the clutter of paper clips, rulers, and ink to enter their living rooms. Thank you, too, for having wonderful children. Your sons and daughters worked diligently under the pressures of time and opinion, and showed a fine core of tenacity and eagerness given to them only by you.
