The student body thinks Graduates of 1965: Congratulations on the completion of your twelve years of public education. You are about to embark into the great society, cold wars, and civic strife, However, there are great opportunities for individual thinkers and for leaders. We hope you will accept these challenges of opportunity and be successful in life's venture. You are always welcome at West Branch High School. Visit us often. Your problems are our problemsg your gains are our gains. Good Luck, Class of 1965. Clinton H. Heacock THESE MEN GUIDED US Norman Cousins once said, Education fails unless the three R's at one end of the school spectrum lead ultimately to the four P's at the other - Preparation for Earning, Preparation for Living, Preparation for Under- standing, and Preparation for Participation in the pro- blems involved in the making of a better world. To you Seniors, it is hoped that your twelve years at West Branch have given you the basic three R's which prepared you for the four P's. In the long run you cannot measure your success by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished and what you will accomplish with your abilities. I consider it an honor to have had the chance to be with you this year. My best wishes go with you as you go your many ways. Robert Corll THRUUGH THE PERILS OF 65 To the Graduating Class of 1965: I want both to congratulate you and to challenge you. First, I congratulate you for having successfully passed one of life's more important milestones--that of gradu- ating from high school. It is always gratifying to reach a milestone such as this and to realize, at least for the moment, that classes are over, textbooks are closed, and examinations are behind us. But I challenge you to let this milestone become only one of many which you will pass. The great classroom of life awaits your participation and contribution. Hundreds of good books are eager to teach you their lessons. Your examinations should come often and should be self- administered. Continually ask yourself, By whose rules am I acting: in whose strengthg in whose glory? What faith, humility, self-denial, and love of God and of man have there been in all my actions? The response you give to these questions will ultimately determine the degree of success your class will experience. Sincerely, Richard A. Garra SECRET ARIES KEEP SCHOOL RUNNING SMOOTHLY This has been a busy but happy year for me, and, without the help of many of your classmates, I never could have made it. As our Senior class of 1965 looked forward to graduation, we also looked backward over our last four years of high school and reminisced. With 212 students, we enjoyed our first year in highschool as Freshmen at the old building. We held a Freshmen Mixer to help the students get acquainted. Many of us suffered through club initiations. During our Sophomore year we attempted to raise money by selling candy. We also enjoyed two Sophomore parties. Our Junior year was filled with both work and fun, but we were rewarded for all our work with our Junior- Senior Prom, On A Tropical Island . Other highlights of this year were our Junior play, Headin' for the Hills , and the great day we received our class rings. We also had the privilege of spending our Junior year at our new school building which is very beautiful. We were quite proud to be going to school here. But now as our Senior year has ended, we will always look back on this year as the best of our four years. We have enjoyed our Senior Prom, and our Senior play, Arsenic and Old Lace . Other highlights were our Government trip to the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland, our Senior Supper, and Bacca- laureate and Commencement ceremonies which were held May 30 and June 1 respectively. Now as we all follow our separate paths in life, some of us may become great and some of us may not, but we will all be able to look back at our years at West Branch as four of the most wonderful years of our lives. Highlights of the year's meetings were the initiation for the new members in October and the Saturnalia pro- gram, with a gift exchange in December. The club used the funds that had been building up in the treasury to purchase Latin tapes for the Language Lab. During the year, we had bakesales to make money for the field trip to Pittsburgh in March. The year's social activities closed in May with the traditional Roman banquet, at which we ate in Roman style. The first year members served as s1aves to the second year members, the Roman citizens. 1 LOS PICAROS PREPARE A FIESTA Los Picaros had 32 Spanish stu- dents on the roll call for 1964-65. Club membership was limited to second and third year students. Only those members maintaining a C average in Spanish were eligible for membership. Our meetings included a Christmas party and initiation for the new members. The feature of the Christmas party was a pinata in the shape of a clown. When the pinata was broken, the students raced to pick up as many candies as possible. The Spanish Club held a donut sale to help raise money for a dinner featuring Spanish food. Slides of South America were shown as the program portion of the evening. The main project was the Spanish display for the Mahoning County Fair. This display had various articles that are peculiar to Mexico. Terrie Chain, Treasurer, Marilyn Eshelman, secretary, Arlene Curphey, Vice-President, Donita Sams, President, Miss Barnett, Advisor. Our library is still in the midst of a building process, but many more shelves have been filled by the addi- tion of approximately 1900 Volumes since the library opened. Hard-working and cooperative student librarians are essential to the building and running of a school library in as mach as they may be asked to do anything from typing an order card to showing a movie. The library aides accomplished and learned much in the time they gave. The co-editors a.nd advisor, Mrs. Lois Watson, were among the main figures in planning and developing the '65 Warrior. Our advisor, Mrs. Lois Watson, provided staff members with invaluable help when trouble arose. Everyone became adept at working with pictures. Cropping, reducing, and, proportioning were the big headaches in this de- partment. EVENTS OF THE YEAR Bookkeeping and accounting fell to the lot of our business managers, Bob a.nd Marilyn. By the time they were through, the ledgers were well thumbed. ,,-il 1 i -Q- ANNUAL STAFF CREED Neither endless homework, tricky tests, weekly Observers, club activities, nor countless problems can keep these staff members from the swift completion of their appointed work. Although it seems relatively insignificant, typing was one of our major problems. Standing, Linda Polen, Kendra Phillips, Lee Ann Malloy, Randy Beeson, Joanne Herold, Keith Martig, Linda Benner, Mrs. Lois Watson. As the day drew near each month for another issue of the West Branch Review to come out, a chance visitor to the news- paper room would have seen staff members busily writing and blocking stories and setting up pages. This busy staff learned the technical points of publishing a paper at a workshop at Ohio University the summer before school started. Working together, the editor, the various page editors, the ad- visor, and the business manager published issues of the mimeo- graphed newspapers. With the money that they made, the staff had the last issues printed by a printing company in Beloit. Not only did the staff publish newspapers, but they were well known for their donut-sales The staff sponsored a talent assembly on April 9, in which many students participated. The year of 1964-65 proved to be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience for the staff--one which they will long remember. Jim Stoffer, business manager, andMlss Sandra Fike, advisor. ff ! ', y CHOIR DISPLA YS GIF TED VOICE The West Branch High School Choir, with a membership of over 50 voices, was newly formed this year as the advanced group. Because of the growing develop- ment of the Choral department, the Choir has become very select. The Choir's first appearance in robes was at the annual Christmas program. Some of the selections sung were The Shepherd's Story., Dicken's The First Noel, and Christ- mas Day. Mrs. Faris thought the Choir had become talented enough to sing in competition. Those who were interested worked very hard to represent West Branch at District V Contest. The Choir received a rating of a I and two II's which is outstanding and something for which the Choir should be congratulated. The Choir sang many popular selections in the Spring Choral Concert, in which the entire Choral department participated. It was the final concert of the year and was enjoyed by a large audience. Being the select group, the Choir made many other appearances. Among these were: Baccalaureate, Commencement, most of the formal school assemblies, and many other public appearances. The Choir would like to thank Mrs. Faris for her tireless efforts in working with us, this year. an fit!!! For one six weeks we had a student teacher from Mount Union College, Mrs. Betty Davis. We enjoyed her teachings very much and showed our appreciation by giving a party in her honor, Our various activities included five profitable bakesales, singing for the Beloit Friends Church at Christmas, singing for a Parents Choral Club meeting, and partic- ipating in the Winter' and Spring choral concerts. All the activities were greatly enjoyed by each member of the chorus. During the past three years the West Branch Octet has enjoyed many rewarding experiences. Since the Octet was organ- ized, it has sung for many of the churches in the community, Ruritan clubs, the Eastern Stars and Masons, and various women's clubs. Our senior year the group attended district contest at Youngstown University and by receiving a I or Superior rating we qualified to go on to the State Contest at Kent State University. At the district contest the Octet sang Last Spring by Grieg, and then for State The Nightingale by Tchaishovsky. The Octet is not organized as a singing group for any particular kinds of music but rather sings classical, religious, popular, and folk music. Al- though the past three years have meant many extra practices, no member of the West Branch Octet will ever forget all the experiences we have shared. Gayla Buckman, Gary Wulf, Nancy Lora, Doug Somers, Lou Cullisong Linda Herren, accompanist, Helen Marie Rhome, Carol Williams, Vivian Hipkins, Gibbons. The Sophomore Sextette was organized this year. It provided music at the Christmas and Spring Choral Concerts, Mother-Daughter Teas, and a Grange Christmas Party. This new singing group will continue to perform next year. Benner, Ellen Planchock The new Senior Sextette was formed in November 1964 to replace the '63 sextet. During the year we sang for such things as the Ruritan Talent Show, and one of the regular Ruritan meetings. We also sang at several Churches in the areag the annual Parents Choral Club supper, and one of the Parents Clubs' regular meetingsg and we sang for the newspaper's talent show. We appeared in the Annual Christmas and Spring Concerts, and made several other appearances. Although we have only been together for one year, we have enjoyed every minute of it. The fine memories we've collected during this one year will be with us always.
