OMO 10 0G3 ® SaOTIlLE) v Cl 0 0 , G |0 D ®fl flflfl m a@0M§ IS m HELEN C MIXTER SCHOOL WEST BOYLSTON MRS HOUGHTON GRADE 2 Upon our childhood, 4 As we think back We reflect on the times remembered Our heroes, mentors, families and teachers helped to shape the time we spent living, loving, and learning. 9 IN MEMORY OF MRS. MARGARET PEPPY KLEIN Mrs. Klein played many roles in the West Boylston school system. Not only was she an important part of the School Committee and Parent Advisory Board, but she became a cherished friend to the people of West Boy lston. She valued student opinions and strived to help when she could. Mrs. Klein attended student activities for years, including soccer games, senior plays, spring musicals, and football games. She worked for many committees and char- itable organizations. Those who worked beside her were always im- pressed with her dedication and sense of commitment. When working toward a goal, she never left a stone unturned or a project unfinished. Mrs. Klein will be fondly remembered and missed by everyone she touched. To laugfi often and much-, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children-, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends-, to appreciate beauty-, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little bit better — whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition-, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. — Ralph Waldo Emerson 10 IN APPRECIATION MRS. GRUSZKA INGREDIENTS; 2 C. sweetness, Combine with I T. of love. Stir in loyalty, spirit, and support with patience, reason, and considera- tion. Mix well. Add 1 4 heaping tsp. of encouragement and blend with a willingness to help. Mrs. Gruszka, our teacher and friend, is someone we will always remember as a special person of our high school years. As our class advisor, Mrs. G” put in a lot of time and effort to see that the class of 1989 always reigned on top — class meetings, fundraisers, the prom, play competitions, and homecoming week. As a teacher she taught us a wide range of things from changing a baby’s diaper to cooking a Thanksgiving feast. As a friend, she was an excellent listener and a wise advice giver. The class of 1989 deeply appreciates all that Mrs. Gruszka has contributed. Her ability to give of herself made the class of 1989 the best. We thank you Mrs. Gruszka from the bottom of our hearts. What you have done for us will always be a partof ourfond memories. We will miss you very much. Love, the Class of 1989 THE MUSIC MAN As music teacher for thirty years, Mr. Herbert Maynard has embodied the spirit of the lion. His firm belief in educating a well-rounded person has helped his stu- dents to believe in themselves, in the school, and in their ability to make great things happen. He has strived, and suc- ceeded, in instilling pride and positive thinking in his students by teachi ng the whole student, not just the musician. He has also taught his students to live for the present and to look toward the future with hope and excitement. This year will be his last as a teacher. Mr. Maynard will be leaving the teaching profession to explore other fields. He will long be remembered for his dedication and many contributions: conducting the chorus and football, concert, and prize- winning stage bands; coaching the tennis team, and organizing the skiing program. Even more importantly, though, Mr. May- nard will be remembered for his success in imparting his wisdom and pride to many students — musician and non- musician alike. He has been a role model for both students and the faculty, and his energy and enthusiasm will be missed by all. ... 13 PRINCIPAL DR. MARK R. MASTERSON Many will remember you as the Super Bowl Class”. Few will recognize that you were also the team that almost won the Sportmanship Award when the competition included almost seventy central Massachusetts teams. 1 am most impressed by the diversity of your strengths. You have car- ried the yearbook, the senior play, and a number of teams. You are academically aggressive and competent; you have won many art and music awards. Several of you have ap- plied to some of the most competitive schools in the country and have every reason to expect to be accepted. As a class you have made the most of your educational op- portunities. My most enjoyable memory of you to date is being in the play Get Smart” with you. Best wishes for con- tinued happiness and success. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL DR. PAULA BURKE-UCHE I think of each one of you and your futures, hoping that you will find joy and true fulfillment in the careers you choose. 1 wish you a life long discovery of your talents, interests and the genius that is unique to each one of you. Everyone is a star. May life bring each of you the love, friends, education and op- portunities to enable you to be your true selves. I wish each of you the love spoken of in Corinthians 1, 13: If I speak in the tongues of men and angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if 1 have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude; Love does not in- sist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. SUPERINTENDENT LEO J. SULLIVAN The Class of 1989 will long be remembered as one of the most impressive groups of young people ever to graduate from West Boylston |r.-Sr. High School. While obvious public achievements such as the Super Bowl victory have received much public acclaim, it is your less obvious qualities and talents in which we who know you take the most pride. As a class, you have long enjoyed a reputation for intelligence, industry, and motivation. More impor- tantly, you have been respected for your sensitivity and genuine concern for others. As you leave us for the final time, I would like you to consider that you have been the recipients of many intangible gifts during your eighteen years. You have benefitted from loving parents, a supportive community, and concerned teachers. You have been guided, assisted, and encouraged each step along the way. There is an old saying, From those to whom much is given, much is expected”. We expect and hope that in the years ahead you will try hard to give back to others as much as you have received. Good luck. Class of ' 89! Local scenes such as these will remind us of the countless times we walked the sidewalk toward school, viewed the art work of the senior class on the traditional lion mascot in front of the school, or slid down the slide at Major Edwards Elementary School. It is the town of West Boylston itself as well as the schooling we received here which has helped to shape us into the people we have become. 82 83 WEST BOYLSTON OLD AND NEW The town of West Boylston is under- going numerous changes. Shopping areas such as the Wachusett Plaza and Downtown Crossing are sprout- ing up and taking over some of the country land. Land bordering Route 1 2 is being cleared to make room for a local McDonald’s. These scenes sharply contrast the traditional old- time West Boylston landmarks such as the Old Stone Church and the Beaman Memorial Library. In a few years, West Boylston is projected to become more busy with increased traffic due to the high concentration of shopping centers. However, the town will never lose its sense of his- tory. 84 HOMECOMING Homecoming week was filled with fun and excitement for all. Each day had a different theme, ending with the traditional Blue and White Day. Students in grades nine through twelve showed their spirit by wear- ing costumes representing the theme of the day (including Jodie Blake and Megan Cleary as Tarzan and Jane and students wearing clashing outfits for Clash Day) and competing in various events includ- ing an obstacle course, jello-eating contest, and a lip-sync competition. The seniors proved they had the most spirit by ending the week with the most points. 86 The Homecoming Court was an- nounced by Bessie Kokalis during the pep rally on Friday afternoon, September 23, 1988. The Court was made up of those girls who showed the most spirit during the week. It included seniors lodie Blake and Megan Cleary, juniors Stephanie Pasquale and Lisa Lenkarski, sophomores Sue Priestley and Molly Mahoney, and freshmen Erin Cleary and Sara Lindberg. The foot- ball team won its game on Friday night, a great start to a winning sea- son. The fun-filled week ended with the Homecoming Dance. )odie Blake was crowned Homecoming Queen. 88 i o 4 « r a?5 ' ai?: ’ .L V 89 JUNIOR PROM Our junior Prom, Hold on to the Night,” was held on May 27, 1988. Many of us have memories of the spreading rumors: Who do you think he’ll ask?” 1 bet you five dollars she’ll make the Court.” En- thusiasm mounted as the date drew closer and closer, with the girls buy- ing their gowns and the guys order- ing their tuxedos. When the day fi- nally arrived, our anticipation peaked. A reception was held in the school cafeteria which was decor- ated with a colorful mural that doubled as a backdrop for pictures. 90 After spending some time visiting with friends and family, the couples drove to Indian Meadows Country Club in Westboro to fulfill their dreams and to create memories. At 10:00 Kim Holmes was crowned Prom Queen, and her Court was selected: Amy Willoughby, Alisa Cure, Lori Jackson, Lisa Langhill, Melissa Salluce, and Missy Lough- lin. After the dancing, the couples dispersed to different parties around town to end the perfect evening. QUEBEC: JE ME SOUVIENS On October 22, 1988, a dreary Saturday morning, the French Club embarked on what may have been the last Ouebec trip of the high school. Know- ing this, the eager group of twenty-five young franco- phones made the most of every ' moment of the four day excursion. The eight hour bus ride was tiresome, but Charlie, the bus driver, along with the four chaperons, kept the stu- dents’ spirits high. 92 Some highlights of the trip in- cluded an exquisite breakfast at the Chateau Frontenac, a ferry ride on the Saint Law- rence River, a historic tour of the Citadelle, a horse-drawn caleche ride, an informative day at a French-Canadian school, as well as numerous typical French dinners. For those four days, the students and chaperons were like one big family. Although they all wished it could have lasted longer, everyone breathed a slight sigh of relief when Charlie pulled into the drive- way of W.B.H.S. 96 FANCY FOOTWORK The varsity soccer team had a fun season, finishing with a record of 5- 10-2. The leading seniors: Leon and Lisa Hovsepian, Scott Wilson, Chris Rotti, lay Brunetta, and |eff Harris will surely be missed next year. The team is left to the skilled Pat Mc- Enaney, Scott Atchue, David Hub- bard, Pete Lancette, and the rest of the underclassmen. GO FOR THE GOAL The girl ' s soccer team enjoyed a winning season, 7-4-3. Sheri Newton and Michelle Aubrey, the senior co-captains,led the team in talent and support. Next year, the responsibility will fall with the skilled defensewoman Peggy Kavanagh. The remainder of the team is made up of primarily the junior high. Overall, the team did a remarkable job against the bigger, more experienced teams such as Shrewsbury. Christina Bebas, Cori Howland, and Kerri Hubbard show great potential. Mr. Ekblomis looking forward to the year after next because there will be enough people and talent to field a varsity team. Top left-, on the go; Right: Go Team!!; Bottom; (top row) Amy Bavosi, Molly Mahoney, Sheri Newton, Michelle Aubrey, Peggy Kavanagh, Sara Atchue, Kerri Hub- bard, Coach Ekblom, (bottom row) Lori Kavangh, )en Lanacchino, Kellie Cap- abianca, )en Bavosi, Hillary Hanslow, Cori Howland, Christina Bebas. 100 CROSS COUNTRY Despite our disappointing record, the runners all deserve much res pect and credit for their dedication.” — Coach McGrath. The team was led by co-captains Mike Menard and Dave Goyette. Lance Watkins (junior) had some very strong showings as well as )ason Shaw, Rob Fellrath, and )ason Kavanagh. Eric Weir, Matt Scales, lason Lashanian, Michele Neary, Amy Gaitane, and Becky Gill all ran well. Although the field hockey team did not enjoy a winning season, Coach Beverly Schofield was satisfied with her team’s efforts. We had an un- usual situation whereby seniors and seventh graders alike were on the same squad. The seniors became role models for the younger ath- letes.” Headed by co-captains Robin Haddad and Beth lohnson, the team ended the season with a record of 4-6-3. Other seniors in- clude Cheryl C., Alisa C., Cara H., Tara K., |en R., Jenny R., Melissa M., Pam S., and Katie S. Next year Coach Scholfield hopes to round up enough young talent to establish a team and keep the traditions of sticks, Hole in the Bucket,” and the course, as well as the game of field hockey it- self, alive in West Boylston. 102 SLICK STICKS Left: Standing — B. SUPER SEASON The football team had a remarkable season, winning the Division III Super- bowl and Southern Worcester County League. The tri-captains, Bob Shea, Chuck Carelli, and Joel Carelli led the team to an invincible season. Despite being the smallest public school in the state to still have a football team, the Lions remained undefeated to finish the season with a perfect record of 1 1 - 0. Coach Priestley says, It was a year that we were hoping for, and our dreams came true. Top; WB is number one! Above: Proud to be a tri-captain! Top: Another congrats to Chuck Carelli! It was another year of difficult weather conditions that they endured without complaint. Their moral support and school spirit car- ried over to the fans and surely spurred the Lions to their victorious season. Top: Cheerleaders display precise movements. The cheerleaders consisted of four seniors: Tina Belsito, Kim Holmes, Lori lackson, and Carol Webb. Michelle Greene and len Glea- son (juniors) and Amy Lavoie (a sopho- more), also cheered. Even though the basketball team did not have a winning season, the cheerleaders were always on the sidelines, cheering them on. These girls also performed routines during halftime, time-outs and in be- tween quarters. Constructing mounts with only seven people was difficult, but they did a great job designing a variety of impressive smaller mounts. Overall, the cheerleaders, under the direction of Coach Virginia Ekblom, had a successful season, in keeping the spirits of the fans and the players high. The Varsity Basketball Cheerleading Squad: Kneeling: Amy Lavoie, Michelle Greene, |en Gleason. Standing: Tina Belsito, Carol Webb, Lori lackson, Kim Holmes. Bessie Kokalis is surrounded by Prouty. The senior-studded girls’ varsity basketball team finished the season with a successful 10-8 record. Cheryl Casey, Alisa Cure, Lisa Hovsep- ian, Bessie Kokalis, Sheri Newton, Pam Saro, and Katie Smith all provided senior leadership, ju- niors Colleen Kelly and len Desmarais and eighth grade sensation Meri Galena provided crucial rebounding, scor- ing, and ballhandling. Although Lisa Hovsepian became the first West Boylston girl to score 1000 points, it was the team unification which led to their winning rec- ord. The seniors will surely be missed next year as Coach Priestley will face the task of re- building the program with underclassmen. Sicknesses and two injuries cost the Lions some close games until they were at full strength. However, returning se- niors Dave Goyette, Chuck Carelli, )oel Carelli, Tom Sambito, Jeff Lind- berg, Mark Chila, )ohn Mattison, and Scott Lavoie proved they still had some fight left in them. The team learned from their mistakes with grueling practices and guidance from Coach Bonci. Dave Goyette was the leading scorer in the SWCL with 360 points. Although the girls ' team lacked some experience, they were strong contenders in the league. Amy Gaitane, Claudia Copeland, Cori Howland, Karen Messinger, and Christina Bebas were excellent players. They finished their season with a 5-10 record, but Coach Gar- afoli is looking ahead. In only a couple of years they will have de- veloped and refined their skills, and will definitely have the talent for championship seasons. The |V Boys ' Basketball record was 3-14 this year, but despite a tough season there were some bright spots. Freshman Matt Gaitane lead the team in scoring with a 1 5 point average. Sophomore Dave Cure did a fine job rebound- ing on both sides of the floor, and he was second on the team in scor- ing. Top: Cori Howland skies up for two. The rest of the cast was composed of a wide range of tal- ented, invaluable seniors with help from some underclassmen.
