When we came in from break- fast with donuts in hand, we tried to convince you that our tardiness wasn’t planned. When we threw a cookie at the table next door, we realized our conduct would be toler- ated no more. As we sat in your office await- ing our doom, we prayed that we wouldn’t be sent to the “rubber-room.” Carlton J. O’Connor, Principal Looking back now it all seems so clear, your intentions were kind, just, and sincere. We hope to leave the school mature and wise, and it is with reluctance that we say good- bye’s.” 17 Groovy Guy Renaissance Man of the Eighties sctsttuxi n % Mj u kiis w yB mm «5 a izscfjtr nafrktkr. Looking at the present and toward the future, these contributions may have changed our attitudes, values, or opinions. Politically, the Iran-Contra Deal has forced many of us to question the capability of President Reagan and his “lack of memory.” Michael Dukais, our governor, is running for president. How will this effect our future? The alleged report of Hart’s extramarital affair, discovered by the press, caused Hart to drop out of the presidential race. Did the press have the right to invade publicize Hart’s private life. Speaking about celebrities in the press, Dave and Maddie have been “Moonlighting” TV with their romance. So long to Shelley Long who left “Cheers” for the movies. Dr. Ruth Westheimer created waves hosting her show “Sexually Speaking”. Prince Andrew finally met his fairy princess, Fergie. Michael J. Fox has continued to be popular in his role on “Family Ties.” Max Headroom moves from commercials to prime time TV with his new show. Rock Hudson Liberace died of AIDS. Platoon is released after much persuasion by O. Stone. S. Africa (apartheid), Iran (arms) and Nicaragua (contras), continue to play parts in our lives as our leaders try to discover a way to achieve peace. We felt insecure, yet safe, wondering what was the cool thing to do. Copycat suicide also caught fire scaring students and adults alike. Crack became an issue when Len Bias died of an overdose of cocaine. Officials started to ban smoking in public places. A requirement to wear seatbelts in MA was overruled. The limits of human rights are being currently examined by violated protesters. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) will most likely change our outlook on sex as we face this deadly virus that has no cure. Surrogate motherhood emerged with the custody battle for Baby M. Doctors are being overwhelmed with malpractice suits. How will this effect the future of health care? Pondering about the things and issues today, gives us the opportunity to foresee tomorrow. ISSUES 81 WORK HARD Patty Dugan and Angie Bailey displays the new fashions at Susan, Lisa, Jill, and Amy know the value of their hard work. Audrey’s •m ' v ft Molly, Debbie, Marianne, Heidi, Tim, and Mary show their Friendly smiles. Without a doubt, the senior class are hard workers! These dedicated professionals use their extra time working from restaurants to nursing homes. School at WBHS takes up more than enough time, but this overworked underpaid class still keeps it all together. Scott, Beeza, and Mark keep each other company at Shell. Mark does a top job at The Fair. 82 Pete F. discovers the world of cosmetics. Without a doubt, the senior class definitely plays hard! With our own individual tastes, we have plenty of ways to keep our- selves busy and amused. Seniors may be found on a normal Friday night partying, dancing, bow- ling, cruising, or resting for the weekend. No one else can limbo like Matt B. Kavanagh. Members of the Cross Country teams illustrate their characters with the adjectives “Loud, competitive, and troublesome”. The seniors dominated the course as Kristi Kavanaugh finished fifth in the league meet. Although Michelle Larose, a lead runner, was injured, the team had a record of 7-4. “The only thing we would change about our season is the boys . . . they won’t sing along with us.” The team consists of mainly seniors (Lisa Casey, Sheila Chenard, Kristi Kavanaugh, and Michelle Larose), rebuilding of the team must occur in the near future. 102 RADICAL RUNNERS First row: S. Sullivan, J. Shaw, B. Smith; second row: D. Goyette, D. McEnaney, M. Menard, A. Greenough. Mr. McGrath characterizes his Boys Cross Country Team as “Hardworking, inexperienced, and having good attitudes.” The one senior, A1 Greenough, ex- emplified these qualities as he lead the team finishing fourth in the league. A larger turnout is Mr. McGrath’s one hope for next year. An increase is needed in order to ensure the future of Boys Cross Country. 103 WITHOUT A DOUBT . . . first row: J. Johnson, M. O’Connor. P. Johnson Amy A gives the evil eye. “Don’t worry WB has lost before . . .’’ Coach Schofield uses the adjectives “stressful, competitive, and en- thusiastic” to describe her field hockey team. Although the members of the team did not have a winning season, they strived to achieve by try- ing their best. Senior half-back, Carla Bruhn, and senior Patty Du gan, were the captains who proved their worth with effective defense. Seniors Amy All worth, Susan Barakian, Jen Holmes, Joey Johnson, and Molly O’Connor also played with skill. The future for field hockey in W.B. looks uncertain unless . . . the underclassmen begin to try out for this fulfilling and exciting sport; designed to relieve stress. This year the Lions put their best foot forward and formed a team with a quick offense and a rugged defense. The season was quite an accomplishment for all the players. Their hard work paid off with a winning season of 7-3. “Quick, young, and good” were the words Coach Priestly used to describe his team. His wish to have “won three more games” will give the team all the more determination to do so in the years to come. The team excelled this year with the determination of all the players under the leadership of Coach Priestly, captains John Gleason and Beeza Watkins and other “excellent” seniors Phil Chila, Jeff Daignault, John Darrah, Pete Flanagan, Chris Greer, Scott Grenier, and Tim Roberts led the team to victory. Without a doubt, is was a super season!!! 106 TIMELY TOUCHDOWNS John Gleason gives his Billy Idol impression on the field. “If I wanted a hug, I would’ve asked a girlfriend.” I ) JV FOOTBALL Millbury win David Prouty win Leicester win Uxbridge win Oxford win Northbridge loss Assabet loss Raise your hand, raise your hand, if you’re sure! Dur- ing snow, biting winds, and pouring rain, the cheerleaders remained to encourage the team. The senior members, along with Coach Mrs. Ekblom, worked on new mounts, cheers, and routines. These senior members were Amy Alicandro, Maureen Bennett, Sherri Green, Marianne Mullen, and Margie Webb. 109 WITHOUT A DOUBT . . . first row: J. Alicandro, L, Hovsepian, E. Olson, D. Leslie, T. Although soccer is not a big sport at WBHS, the teams participation has in- creased greatly in the past years. The soccer season had its share of challenges, as well as easy wins, to create a 5-10-1 record. It appears that the team had a losing season; however, the team managed to achieve a shut-out win against the rivals of Baypath. The seniors who displayed their athletic skills were Chris Klein, Amitjoshi, Dave Leslie, Eric Olson, and goalie, Todd Parker. Eric struts across the field. 110 KICKI NG KLEATS first row: M. Rotti, D. Schofield, R. McKay, C. Granger, M. Welburn, and Coach Bond. The boys varsity team had a rough season. Their main hindrance was lack of height. They had several good games with the help of seniors A1 Greenough, Scott Bostek, and Beeza Watkins. A1 describes the team’s sea- son as jamming super. The future will prove to be competitive as West Boylston continues to dribble and defend with enthusiasm. The boy’s junior varsity team boasts the young talent s ofTom Sambito, Mike Menard, and Joe Cappabianca. As they play, they learn the basketball ropes. Finishing with a decent record this group promises to be successful in the future. 112 BOUNTIFUL BASKETS Chuck goes for the rebound. Mr. Perry and Bill Young keep score. Kelly, K, Smith, Coach Garfoli, C. Casey, J. Pearcy. The girls basketball team had an excellent season, along with beating their rival, Uxbridge. They reached the semifinals but were defeated by Brom- field. Senior Carla Bruhn played an outstanding defense as senior Lisa Casey successfully rebounded throughout the season. The future appears promis- ing because of the many talented underclassmen. Coach Priestly wishes the team had less turnovers, but described his team as quick. Coach Garafoli “wouldn’t change anything” about the junior varsity girls basketball team. This team had an outstanding season with a 16-2 record. They defeated the two teams that they lost to previously in the second round. Tall and talented are the adjec- tives Coach Garafoli used to descibe his team. The future should be promising but “perhaps not as dominant as in the past.” 114 SUPERIOR SHOTS Try and block my shot The lions surround their prey. Captains, Lisa C. and Carla B., proudly lead WBHS. Every game, they energetically display vigor and pep in their many routines. The yelling of commands to “shoot for the hoop” can be heard throughout the gym while the performing of the “chain”, helps get everyone psyched. Under the coaching of Mrs. Ekblom, the squad has been able to increase spirit. Those legs aren’t just to look at!! 117 WITHOUT A DOUBT . . . lA A — 1 j J BL Joe Capp is alone, ponders his game Chuck takes his walk. Donald Belsito and Beeza Watkins seniors help the young players learn the game. Since the team consists of mainly underclassmen, the players must become developed over a three year period. Coach Maynard says that the 1987 tennis team is “experienced, dedicated, and cooperative” but confesses that the season came a little “too early”. Despite the weather influences this years boys’ tennis was very successful. Dave and Matt conquer all as double partners. 123 WITHOUT A DOUBT . . . first row: M. Menard, J- Darrah, C. Greer, K. Girl’s track is energetic but young and inexperienced. The seniors MaryEllen Carlson, Lisa Casey, and IGisti Kavanaugh, along with the underclassmen, compete with enthusiastic spirit. Mr. Keeney says “the first meet was the best that he has ever witnessed!”. With a winning start, the season promises, to remain competitive. The future of girls track depends on future participa- tion. Leon projects his javelin. Colleen and Kristi were born to run. 124 FLYI NG FEET MaryEllen and Meg intensely watch their opponents Chris Greer and John Darrah lead the boys track team with skill and expertise. Mr. Priestly wishes that more male athletes would try out for track and says that the future appears dismal without better participation. Working together, the boys track team hopes to have a successful season. Glenn grasps for air. Make sure you make WB win! 125 PERFECT PARS first row: S. Flynn, D. Eagan, D. Stevens, J. Smith, P. Dancing to “This Could Be The Night,” We wondered who might. Be crowned queen. It was no surprise when Mr. O’Connor gave the honor to Heidi Jean. 132 A 133 REMEMBER Each day of Homecoming Week had separate themes. Monday through Friday took after song titles. We showed spirit for all of our teams. There were daily competi- tions within the grades. Along with the charity donation. The class of 1987 had it made. And yet again ex- perienced the winning sensation. The Homecoming Court was picked with much thought as this decision is very important. Who could be our Queen? Senior Michelle Larose WON the lot. Michelle Larose was just crowned homecoming queen. Amy, Chris, and Maureen check out the prospects for the dance. Maybe field hockey is your sport, Eric. 134 THE FEELING? Donald surely has the lion spirit. Dave and Tracy enjoy the dance. Kevin and Beeza, can’t you argue later? Patty, Amy, and Michelle sure know how to boogie! Kristi gives Michelle a congratulation hug. 135 “The Sting Hooker played by Todd Parker and Gondorff played by Chris Klein. The play was fun and it turned out fine. We played the con and made the sting Mr. White and the cast of 50 gave it their everything. 136 137 How to Succeed in Business JP Finch (Dave Leslie) attempted to climb the ladder of success by using a guide, He managed to succeed, even though he never tried. He found Rosemary (Tracy Bahn), but didn’t give her a second look. Because he was told to do so in his trusty little book. Although disaster struck and he didn’t know what to do. He managed to succeed in business and win his girl too! 138 Without Even Trying WHAT A BALL!!!! It was quite a sight. To see the seniors dancing to “Wonderful Tonight.” It was held at Stephanie’s with “Dazzle” — quite a blast. The seniors were bouncing off the walls because it was their last. On April 3rd they boogied away, And hoped it would never end — because they wanted to stay. 140 141 QUEBEC EST UN QUEBEC The French classes four and five, went to Quebec for four days. They met some French people and tried to understand their ways. Visiting many museums and stores, They ate until they could eat no more. They bought paintings from an artist on the street. And had a buggy ride from horses with tired feet. Attending a school, to explore the life of a student. They discovered that the need for French was evident. At the end of the trip, they hoped to return. Saying goodbye to guide Jean Pierre, remembering all they had learned. A spectacular view of Chateau Frontenac Our crazy chaperones We remember . . . 142 VILLE D’AMOUR This sure beats the cafeteria lunches! A real life haunted house 111! 143 THAT WAS THEN . . . For the second year in a row, the class of 1987 won the annual Play Competitions with the play “The Scheme of the Driftless Shifter.” The play was about producing a play and its common mistakes. There were many planned mistakes to also add to the realistic production. As we the class of 1987 look back to Robin Hood, the schoolhouse, and the president’s golf club, we still find the memories of the fun and frus- trations over the years. We even proved it was true. “How could we have lost? Look at these costumes! Mr. Belsito, if you don’t behave you will get a pink slip! 144 I i . . . THIS IS NOW The villian makes his threat! 145 PAJAMARAMA The junior class performed a play en- titled “The Pajama Party.” The successful performance received numerous laughs as the juniors tried their best to steal the show. The all girl cast portrayed a very realistic sleepover. Put your left foot in, put your left foot out, and do the hokey pokey. The bear stole the show. “How could the seniors be better. ” 146 COLLEGE LIFE-ALREADY? After many long hours of practice, the sophomore class professionally performed “A Storm in the Dorm.” The story was based on a typical college dorm. The class did a fan- tastic job and should be commended. Kim, cheer up! Your slippers are real cute! 147 REJECTION BY DAD The first play competition is always the hardest, but the freshmen showed their resistance to stage pressure in their “Father Says No.” With such a great start, the freshmen will be a fierce competition in the years to come. ‘Are you sure no one took a bite of this piece of candy?” Coach potatoes on the rise! Can you believe Amy is biting her nails?!? Pres. Pat does his monologue. 148 We’ll miss all of you — Jen, Deb, Carla, MaryEllen, and Molly — Mr. and Mrs. Holmes Congratulations Patty! Dear Readers, The Yearbook Staff would like to convey our sincere apologies to anyone who may have misinterpreted our intentions. This year has been very experimental due to the fact that the year book committee was comprised of all novices, including our advisor Ke vin O’Neil.
