MRS HOLLOWAY GRADE 3 NOVEMBER 8 1976 We look to the past B 4 sharing friendships, growing, living, and learning Together. Our triumphs and failures, 9 ' | ? — The door is open. But the memories of our days and of those closest to us will always remain in images. 13 FRIENDS TO THE END OF TIME The time has come for us to part. And go our separate ways. The sadness that is in my heart, is sure to last for days. Friends to the End of Time. We’ve grown so close in this short while, Once strangers now best friends. From day to day your joyous smile. Shows love which never ends. Friends to the End of Time. Oh, the memories we have shared, The laughter and the fears. Those moments when you showed you cared, And silenced all my fears. Friends to the End of Time. On Earth we may not meet again, But please don’t say goodbye. We’ll say, “Until we meet again.” You, my friend, and 1. O’Connor Principal Now that you have completed your schooling at West Boylston Jr. Sr. High School, I am proud to commend you for your accom- plishments over the past four years. The anxieties and complexities of the modem world you are about to enter are far greater than at any other time. The challenges are great, but I have the greatest confidence you people are prepared to take your place and help make our country a better place to live. Carlton J. O’Connor Principal As the Class of 1 986 prepares to leave us for the final time , we pause to reflect upon the experiences we have shared, the lessons we have learned, and the growth we have experienced — one and all, young and old. Yours is a class that has been touched by reality and tempered by adversity more so than any before it. You have been humbled by the suddenness of tragedy yet steeled by the realization that life goes on. As the saying goes, “tough times don’t last, but tough people do.’’ Yes, we have all grown, not because we have wanted to, but because we have had to. Yet, through it all, we have had one another and as a school community we have grown closer. As the sun sets on your high school experience, understand that human relationships will continue to be your most valuable possessions and that adversity is a dark side of the wonder of life which can always be overcome with conviction, self-belief, and will. You have learned these things in a special way Class of 1986, and you will be the richer for them. Leo J. The 1985 season was only our second under the lights at Goodale Park. Already it is setting a tradition for Friday night games attended faithfully by proud parents, alumni, students, and faculty. Led by senior captains Tony Papandrea, Chris Carrigan, and Jay Dugan, the Lions continued their success. Game time is 7:15. The West Boylston Lions’ marching band and cheerleaders are positioned on the field for the traditional “opening ceremo- nies.” Soon the game is under way and the excitement begins. By the end of the season, the Student Council’s con- cession stand is making a large profit from coffee and hot chocolate purchased by fans in hopes of keeping warm. The stands are kept alive through the cheerleaders’ spirit and en- tertained by the band’s musical selec- tions; one of the more popular being “We Got the Beat”. With everyone pulling together, the annual homecom- ing game was a success, both on the field and off. Through this participation and commitment, we have seen a successful football season. Con- gratulations to all, most notably, Mr. Priestley, Mr. Maynard and Mrs. Hud- son. 66 THOSE TENDER YEARS September 16th marked the begin- ning of Homecoming ' 85. This year’s theme was “Tender Years” by Beaver Brown. Students displayed their school spirit by participating in various activi- ties throughout the week. The daily masquerade began with “Toddler Day” and continued through various stages of life with “Scout Day”, “College Day” and “Old Folks Day”. Activities consisted of a hula-hoop con- test, a s ' more eating contest, trivial pursuit, and a scavenger hunt. The freshmen, outnumbering the other classes, seemed to be full of en- thusiasm throughout the week. The week came to an end with the tradition- al Blue and White Day and Pep Rally. Under the leadership of Mr. Bositis, this year’s homecoming was a tremen- dous success. Saturday night was the traditional Homecoming Dance. D.J.’s kept the beautifully decorated gym rocking all evening. The Court included Kris Cleary, Queen; and Chris Goyette, Susan Barakian. Michelle Larose, Kim Alicandro, Diane Bennett, Megan Cleary and Jody Blake. 70 71 Last year’s musical, “Gypsy”, directed by Grace Leslie, was an enjoy- able activity for everyone involved. The musical was based on the true story of Rose Lee who struggled to bring her two daughters, June and Louise to success on the stage. Annette Devillers starred as Rose and coached her daughters. Louise (Jennifer Colangelo) and June (Julie Thomson) to fame. Herbie, played by Chris Klein assisted Rose in her en- deavors while Papa (Joe Diverdi) tried to discourage the “pushy female.” V % r ) • • “LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU” The story develops as Rose pushes her unwilling daughter June into the business. June rebels by eloping. Her mother, deeply hurt then attempts to direct her attentions towards her other daughter, Louise. Before long Louise gains fame as Gypsy Rose Lee and makes her mother proud. 73 The Junior Prom, held on May 10, 1985, was a memorable experience for all who attended. Couples began to arrive at the Atrium in Worcester shortly before the 7:00 dinner hour. The music was provided by the Gallerie, which kept everyone dancing long into the night. They were even gracious enough to allow a few talented musicians (Jim Been, Joe Di Verdi, Jay Givan and Eric Tarkiainen) to have center stage to entertain us with a few songs. At 10:00, the Queen’s Court was announced consisting of Kris Cleary, Chris Goyette, Janet McGuiggan and Darlene Woodill. Jennifer Dwyer had the honor of being crowned Prom Queen. I On December 13, and 14 the Senior class staged one of the largest plays in the history of West Boylston High. The Senior’s versatility was displayed through many demanding character portrayals such as Pat Gleason as Chief Inspector Clouseau, Jim Been in the role of Dreyfus, and Julie Thomson as Olga. Through the direction of Steven White and the dedication of the entire cast, the final result was a great success. A GROUP TO Each spring a formal induction cere- mony into the National Honor Society is held. The selection of students is based on their achievement in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character and service. The traditional ceremony was held in the high school auditorium, where the inductees pledged them- selves to serve both their community and school. Theirs was followed by speeches from Mr. O’Connor, Mrs. Marshall, and Mr. Sullivan. The Honor Society members of this year’s graduating class are Michelle Barton, Jim Been, Amy Capman, Kris Cleary, Kirk Kenneway, Lisa Lam- berto, Eileen Mautner, Janet McGuiggan, Kim Morris, Brian Scanlon, Erik Tarkianen, Julie Thom- son and Joe Tsagronis. The following officers were elected: Eileen Mautner, President; Amy Capman, Vice Presi- dent; Lisa Lamberto, Secretary; and Julie Thomson, Treasurer. The group began last November by holding a phone-a-thon for the National Heart Association and succeeded in raising over one thousand dollars for their cause. December brought the annual Senior Citizens Christmas Party made possible through the joint effort of the NHS and Student Council. One of the most enjoyable services was assisting with the Massachusetts Special Olympics last spring. The members helped by running events and awarding prizes to the participants. On October 23, 1985, the second annual National Honor Society Convention was held at Algonquin Regional High School, with West Boylston as co-hosts. The Honor Society once again displayed it’s community involvement by organizing a Halloween Party for the town’s young children at Edwards. These acts ex- emplify the dedication of this organiza- tion. Thanks go to Ms. Holmlund, NHS advisor, whose work and caring made it possible. 78 “Cheers” the popular NBC Comedy was the basis for the seniors! 1984 play comps. An episode was chosen and each line for each cast member had to be hand- written. This was indeed a challenging piece of work; but in the end, it was worth it. The performance began with Jim Been’s singing the show’s theme song. From there the audience was kept laughing with great performances by the entire cast, especially the predic- tables. Cliff and Norm. Sam, the cocky ex-jock, and Diane, the snobbish intel- lectual, did their share of feuding while Carla kept tempers flaring with her usual comments and suggestions. This year was no exception, thanks to the Class of 1986. Once again Wilbur managed to get himself into a jam; but, as predictable, he talked his way out of it. The problem that sent his heart spin- ning? You guessed it, a girl. As ex- pected the audience was treated to an enjoyable half hour of comedy through the efforts of a fine group of talented students. Led by Coach Priestley and Senior tri-captains Jay Dugan, Chris Carrigan, and Tony Papandrea, the Lions got off to a great start by upsetting Hudson Catholic 7-6 in the annual Homecoming game. The remainder of the season was filled with very close games, and the Lions lost some real heartbreakers. On Thanksgiving day, the Lions were psyched and ready to defeat the long-time rival Grafton Indians. At the half, the score was tied at six, despite the sleet and wind. In the second half, however, the Indians took the lead and held it to the end. All in all, it was an exciting season, and the Lions gained some respect in the league while representing our school with pride. With the ex- ception of Senior Captain Brian Scanlon, who led the Lions to a 70-38 rout over Monty Tech in the Murdock Christmas Tournament by scoring 25 points, the senior players saw limited action. Instead, Coach Diamanto- poulous went to his younger players early in the season, starting Freshmen Chuck and Joel Carelli. This year the members of the club worked together in making pinatas for the Foreign Language Christmas Party. Also, through the planning of their dedicated advisor, Mrs. Hudson, the Spanish Club had several interesting field trips. IN TONGUES This year the French Club worked together to organize their contribution to the Foreign Language Christmas Party. They had a great time getting people into the Christmas Spirit by singing carols and acting out a skit. Mrs. Anderson assisted the students in planning their other activities throughout the year. LET’S GET PHYSICAL The Varsity Club consists of all the students who participate in Varsity athletics. The advisor, Mr. Garofoli, assists the students in organizing fundraisers to raise scholarship money for college-bound seniors. WINTER WONDERLAND As winter arrived early this past year, students brought their skis out of the closet long before the ski program at Wachusett Mountain began. The Ski Club planned many exciting trips, in- cluding one to Austria, under the leadership of President Dave Goyette and their advisor, Mr. Maynard. TOTAL ECLIPSE Step into the Art room and Mrs. Boosahda, the instructor who devotes time and love to her students and their work, will help you to appreciate the creative world around us. The Art Club, which contains very dedicated students, shares its talents with both the school and community. Their biggest activity this year was the mural painted on the wall of the Fire Department, which was created during the students’ free time. OF THE ARTS The Graphic Arts Club helps us to keep track of what is going on by print- ing up athletic schedules, programs, and tickets. With the help of Mr. Silven, they act as printers for the school, and are a tremendous aid to all organizations. 135 BON APPETIT Upon first glance, one might think that the Home Ec. Club cooks for themselves. Well, for the most part, they spend time cooking for others, such as the elderly at the Oakdale Nurs- ing Home. They enjoy pleasing other people before they think about themselves. Mrs. Gruzka, the advisor, adds just the right touch to this enthusi- astic club. TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS Members of the Business Club take courses in typing, shorthand, and accounting. The club, headed by Miss Salmon and Miss Lawrence, enables the students to learn how to run a busi- ness and get a head start on their futures. HOOKED ON MUSIC BAND The Music Department, under the direction of the ever-encouraging and enthusiastic Mr. Maynard, worked very hard throughout the year preparing for various competitions and concerts. The music includes everything from classical to popular and has a little bit of everything for all ages. The music of W.B.H.S. will continue to entertain for many years to come. CHORUS STAGE BAND 137 SHOOT TO THRILL The Archery Club is made up of stu- dents interested in target shooting. Under the guidance of Mr. White, these students shoot on their own and are encouraged to remain active in their Q.U.E.S.T. Q.U.E.S.T. (Questioning, Under- standing, and Exploring Students’ Thoughts) is a new group organized this year to help students develop effec- tive communication skills including accurate listening skills and under- standing of genuine personal response. Q.U.E.S.T. also helps students develop self-confidence, self under- standing, problem solving techniques, and decision making skills. Students participate only on a volun- tary basis and commit themselves to 1 hour per week for an entire semester. 138 GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADWAY West Boylston High School produces many fantastic dramatic productions, such as, musicals, play competitions, and the Senior Play. All of these would not be possible without the Drama Club and their devoted advisor, Mr. White. The club was kept busy helping out with the Senior Play, “The Pink Panther Strikes Again,” which was a tremendous success. LITERALLY SPEAKING The Literary Magazine, under the direction of Mr. White, is publishing a collection of student writing. The first edition should include a variety of writ- ing samples and art work representing grades seven through twelve. 139 4-3-2-1 ACTION Mr. McGrail leads the Audio-Visual Club in aiding teachers with the school’s equipment. These students learn how to operate projectors, overheads, and video recorders. The Math Club consists of a group of students who participate in math meets throughout the year. Last year they represented our school well by placing second in the division. DO YOU COMPUTE? 140 LEADERS OF THE PACK The Student Council does more for our school than any other club or organization. These students devote many hours of hard work to the different activities during the year. Some of these activities include run- ning the school store, doing afternoon announcements, running the conces- sion stand, and meeting every week to keep student-administration communi- cations open. Along with their day to day activities, they organize a blood drive, assemblies, a Christmas party for the elderly, and a Secret Santa ex- change with the faculty. With their in- volved and supportive advisor, Mrs. Hudson, things are kept running smoothly. HIGH SOCIETY The National Honor Society is composed of students who accumulate a designated grade point average and devote their time and abilities to the school and community. The present members include Brian Scanlon, Janet McGuiggan, Kirk Kenneway, Kim Morris, Kris Cleary, Michelle Barton, Erik Tarkiairien, Joseph Tsagronis, Julie Thomson, Lisa Lamberto, Amy Capman, Eileen Mautner, Margie Webb, Sherri Greene, Jennifer Holmes, Chris Klein, and David Leslie. Ms. Holmlund is their advisor. 141 HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT The main responsibility of the Camera Club is to take and develop pictures for the yearbook. The hard work and dedication of the students and Mr. Traver helped to create an out- standing yearbook. TURN THE PAGE The members of the Lion’s Roar staff are a highly motivated and organized group. Their responsibilities not only demand talent, but require endless hours of work. Their total efforts produce an outstanding edition of the Lion’s Roar. Staff includes; First row: Janet McGuiggan; Kris Cleary, co-editor; Kirsten Johnson; Kim Morris, co-editor; Kristine McDonald; Dawn Chenard. Second row: Marc Sherwin; Amy Capman; Julie Thompson; Eileen Mautner; Joe DiVerdi, art editor; Jay Givan; Jim Been; Also Lisa Lamberto. 143 CLASS OF 1990 EIGHTH GRADE Sandy Almstrom Scott Atchue Ted Bagdasarian Tara Bilodeau Jeremy Borjeson John Boucher Kim Braymer Mike Bruso Tom Capone Joe Carlson Jen Cavan Colleen Coleman Randy Daignault Lisa Delaney Jeff Donnellon Jen Desmaris Mike Dipietro Edwin Erickson John Flanagan Julie Girouard Jen Gleason Kim Graham Colin Granger Michelle Greene Susan Grenier Amy Groden Billy Johnson Angela Jordan Dawn Kalloch Peggy Kavanagh Colleen Kelly Lisa Lenkarski Caine Letendre Jason McCarthy Patrick McEnaney Rob McKay Julie Meola Jen Pearcy Kenny Peeso Tracey Pendleton Mark Pucetti Tracie Raffa David Sarkisian Barbara Shaw Kelli Sheeehan Jason Smith Darrin Stevens Melissa Valley David Verdini Mike Veshi Lance Watkins Mark Welbum Chris Young Also: C. This work took an excep- tional amount of time, and on several ; occasions, we were ready to give up. However, our dedicated advisor, Mrs. Sharron Bouvier, was always there to lend a hand and give us the encouragement that we needed. Her patience and determination helped to make the 1986 Lion’s Roar so memorable. As this was her last year as advisor, I would like to take this time to give her a special thanks. Seldom are people lucky enough to work with someone who is so dedicated. It takes a very special person to take on the responsibility that producing a year book requires, and Mrs. Bouvier is just that — a very special person. To her, we give our sincerest appreciation and love. We would also like to take this time to thank the following people for their hard work on the 1986 Lion’s Roar: Joe Di verdi, Divider pages and artwork; Lisa Lamberto, Prologue and Epilogue; Amy Capman and Eileen Mautner, Activities; Janet McGuiggan and Jim Been, Advertising; Becky Parda, Michelle Pendelton, and Mr. Traver, photography; Ken Cleveland and Mr. Winthrop Handy, Photography. Also, Dawn Chenard, Kris McDonald, Kirsten Johnson, Jen Gilson, and Ed Cure deserve a special thanks for their willingness to do anything to help.
