The dedication of this year’s Lion’s Roar is to Mr. David Keeney. Mr. Keeney had been the class of 1985’s advisor for five years. His dedication to the class has made it possible for events such as our Junior Prom, Senior Ball, and graduation to be successful. He also has helped this class to win the play competitions three years in a row, something that no other class has accomplished. With this we, the class of 1985, would like to thank Mr. Keeney for all he has done. 16 MARK ALAN BARAKIAN “Some are born to move the world, to live their fantasies, but most of us just dream about the things we’d like to be.’’ LAUREN PATRICE ACKERT “Still round the corner there must wait — a new road or a secret gate; and though I oft have passed them by, a day will come at last when 1 — shall take the hidden paths that run — West of the Moon, East of the Sun.’’ SHERRY MARIE BASSAN “In my hands, 1 hold today ... IWe shared something wonderful, it just didn’t last. II can’t stay any longer, I have to move on. To look for the future. Yesterday is gone.” 31 MICHAEL WITKUS TODD CHRISTOPHER YAHNIAN Ashes to diamonds, foe and friend; we were all equal in the end. 32 One morning as Fred was driving to school he received demerits (5) from the shop quartet for doing donuts in the student parking lot. Due to severe pain, Fred skipped homeroom and went straight to the nurse. She told him that he would probably live and that he should check in at the office. 34 While on his way to French, he remembered that he forgot to do his physics homework. Thomas Duffy Science, Mathematics Sally Backstrom Science Lawrence McGrail Physics, Electronics Robert Monroe Science Angelina Scopelliti French, Spanish Marsha Hudson Spanish Edward Bouvier Chemistry 35 He decided he would do it during his history class. When the bell rang he sprinted down the corridor so he wouldn’t be late for his next class, but when he turned the comer he ran smack into the art teacher causing her to drop everything. She was so angry, she gave him 6 demerits. Ralph Pendleton Social Studies Nadia Radwan Art Edward Anderson Social Studies Judith Roy Social Studies Helping her pick everything up made him late for his study hall. He decided to go to the library, but upon receiving the pass he changed his mind and roamed the halls instead. He then proceeded to the senior wing corridor, where he was spotted by one of the business teachers. Sharyn Holmlund Guidance She proceeded to give him 4 demerits for being in an unauthorized area and for forging his library pass. Because of all these demerits, he decided to visit the guidance office. Mary Salmon Business Education Kathleen Gruszka Home Economics In return they forwarded him to the special education department, who then suggested he take up music to occupy his idle study hall time. The bell rang and on his way to the gym, Fred passed the cafeteria. While sitting down to a peaceful meal someone hit him in the eye with a pea, causing all havoc to break out. Ruth Bositis English The cafeteria was in a full fledge food fight. And poor Fred was blamed once again giving him 8 more demerits. After lunch Fred went to English. 39 Where he decided he would write a program to tally his total demerits for the day. So after English, he went to the computer room and with the help of the math department he was successful in tabulating all his demerits for the day. Seeing he had so many, he decided he should pay the administration a visit. Gertrude Doherty Mathematics Maureen M. The whole week was full of games and fun activities that led to the big pep rally in the gym. All the classes competed in many competitions, including an obstacle race and a contest to see which class could yell the loudest ... In other words, which class had the most spirit. Chuck Stevens was crowned Homecoming King, and he introduced the Homecoming Court. The court included Kim Alicandro, Erin Stephens, Marianne Mullen, Michelle Larose, Kris Cleary, Christine Goyette, Darlene DiBara, and Meri Robinson. The football game, that same evening, was the high point for some people for that week. The lions proved that they could hold their own end and beat Millbury. The dance the next night was the high point for the others. During a break, King Chuck Stevens announced the queen, Meri Robinson. When the last dance ended, it was quite a let down after such an exciting week. Although we felt sad that it was all over, we still kept our heads up because of the fine memories that we will be able to keep for the rest of our lives. The Junior Prom for the class of 1985 was everything that one could expect from a prom. The Prom Committee did a great job organizing and preparing for the big night. Most of the couples stopped at the high school, before going on to Landlord Ben’s, to have pictures taken with friends and family. When everyone arrived at Landlord Ben’s and had their pictures taken, we all sat down and had a fine meal of either chicken or steak. After the tables were cleared, it was time for the Grand March around the room. This would be the time for the judges to pick who they thought should be on the court and most importantly, who should be Queen. The time had come and everyone was anxious. Lynne Newton, Kelly Standring, Stephanie Knoebber, and Kim Christo made the Queen’s court. After a moment they announced Heather Smiley as Queen of the 1985 Junior Prom. Mr. O’Conner crowned her. After pictures were taken, it was time to dance. Most of the time the tables were cleared and the dance floor was packed. Everyone, it seemed, had a great time. 69 BABYSITTERS’ BLUES During the Annual Play Competitions the class of 1985, junior class, performed a one act play about two teenagers who try to babysit for some very bratty children. After the fire department, the pizza parlor, and a long distance phone operator get involved with family, the parents come home and straighten everything out. 70 Because of their superb acting abilities and the little antics, that they added themselves, the class of 1985 dominated over all others and were able to carry on the title of “winner” for one more year, something which no other class in the history of the West Boylston High School has been able to do. 71 “CHEERS” For the sophomore class of 1986’s play. They did their own rendition of that familiar television program “Cheers”. They cast the members of the show with students from their class to make the character be the funniest and the best of their capabilities. One of the highlights was when Jim Been sang the theme song at the beginning of the show. 72 ROBIN HOOD 73 Our Senior Ball, held at the Windsir Restaurant, was a night of dancing and good times for all. Our class decided to follow the lead of the previous seniors and have a stag ball, but we were original in our decision to hold it in March. The Senior Ball is less formal than the Junior Prom and was one of our last chances to be together as a class. Double or Nothing entertained us with a variety of music, and the dance floor was always filled to capacity, making it an enjoyable evening for everyone. 75 WHO DUNNIT? The Senior Class of 1985 presented a one act mystery comedy that had a very surprizing ending. The announcer, the panel of detectives, the nurse and paramedics, the little kid, and the lamps all added something extra to make this play all the more enjoyable. The original cast, however, performed very well and helped the class of 1985 go on to it’s third straight victory as the winners of the Annual Play Competitions. T : ' 76 WILBUR The ever loving Wilbur is back in the Junior class of 1986’s play. This time Wilbur “falls in love” and he wants to go to the movies, but he can’t because of many family disputes. All’s well in the end as Wilbur goes to the movies and his family understands that all he wants to do is have a good time. mm w m Tf v . 4. L . 1 78 THE TEACHER HAS IT ROUGH The play put on by the sophomore class of 1987 was a one act farce of a day and life of a teacher’s classroom. This play showed how difficult it can be to be a teacher in these things. Let’s try and show some compassion for these poor people in the future. O.K? 79 TEACHERS, TEACHERS The freshman class of 1988 followed in the footsteps of the sophomores with a play about the schoolroom. Talking out of turn, writing notes, and writing on the chalk board are a few of the many things that the teacher has to put up with. It is nice to know that our own teachers have a little more patience than those, portrayed in the show. 80 It is tradition to celebrate the end of basketball season with a dance. This dance is called the Victory Dance. Although the boys’ basketball team got the big turn outs and crowds for the games, it is with the girls’ basketball team that the school celebrated. They played in the Centrum for the District title, but lost in a tough game. Even though they did lose, the spirits were high and everyone danced the night away. 83 AN HONORABLE GROUP Every year the National Honor Society holds a formal induction ceremony in order to welcome in its newly elected members. Before going to the high school for the formal candle lighting ceremony, a banquet is held for the inductees and the present members, this year taking place at the Sterling Inn. Later at the high school the officers give speeches on the components which make up the ideals of the National Honor Society: Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship. The inductees take an oath to serve their school and community before concluding the evening with every member lighting a candle. 84 85 QUEBEC The French IV and French V classes took a trip to Quebec in October of 1984. The four day trip was a fun-filled and an exciting change from West Boylston. The bus ride was long and tiresome, but the students, after taking a glimpse of the fascinating city, were eager to go out and explore. Some of the highlights of the trip include eating at a very typical French restaurant, a ferry ride on 86 the St. Lawrence River, sightseeing, a buffet meal at the Astral, a horse-drawn caleche ride, a tour of the Citadelle, an interesting day at a French-Canadian High School, and an exciting evening that ended with a surprising birthday party for a fellow student. This trip will be one that most will remember as an important part of the high school lives. 87 I d CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 89 L’lL ABNER West Boylston High School put on its annual spring musical, “L ' il Abner”, in March of 1984. Although the lead characters were portrayed by former students, there was a lot of help from this years seniors: Darlene DiBara, Jenni Colangelo, Mark Barakian, and Lynne Newton. The show went so well because of the people who helped produce it, including Mrs. Grace Leslie, Mr. John Leslie, Mr. Herbert Maynard, and Nicole Stanley. Their talents provided strong guidelines for a great show. The cast as well as the audience enjoyed this spectacle. 92 LIONS’ PRIDE The tradition of football was carried on by seniors Scott Stanley, Chris Murphy, Bob O’Connell, Mark Barakian, Stephen Priestley, Ed Greenouh, Sean Welburn, Bob Parker, and Joe Carrigan. The Lions proved themselves to be a team which never gave up hope and stuck togther until the end of the season. The Lions’ pride showed through on Homecoming Day as the team defeated Millbury. 94 KEEP ON DRIBBLIN’ The fieldhockey team had a fine season. The team was led by tri-captains JoAnn Bruhn, Annette Mercurio, and Noreen Verdini, which also included seniors Miki Fortin, Colleen Labossiere, Dorinda Stevens, and Kori Gilson. The seniors leave the loop and bus songs that include “The MIT song”, “Peppy’s Saloon”, “A Hole In The Bucket” along with many others to the remaining varsity members and j.v. team. 96 RUNNING WITH The boys cross-country team again had a great season. The team was led by seniors Mike Witkus, John Wild, and Scott Casey. Mr. McGrath is the coach for the team. 98 THE WIND Mr. Bouvier is the coach for the girls’ cross-country team, which has done well consistently over the years. He has much to look forward to in the years to come as the team is a young one. The squad is led by junior Carol Watkins. 99 GET THE LIONS’ BEAT The cheerleaders really enjoyed this season, especially after the big win over Millbury on Homecoming Day. The cheerleaders heightened the spirit of the Homecoming pep rally and carried the ceremonial hoop for the football players at the beginning of each home game. Led by captains Kim Christo and Meri Robinson, the squad included seniors Lynne Newton, Kathy Akins, Robbie Hayes, Heather Smiley, and Stephanie Knoebber. too JUST KICKIN’ AROUND Because the majority of the players were underclassmen, the varsity soccer team was dropped. This decision will benefit the team in the future years, as it will give the younger players more playing time. 102 103 BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL STANDING: Coach Diamotopolis, Manager Scott Brearley, Eric Tarkiainen, A1 Greenough, Ed Cure, Manager Jeff Lindberg, Manager Stephen Priestley. The team was led by junior captain Chris Carrigan. Mr. Ekblom, as head coach, has a happy future with this team as it is a young and promising one. HOLE IN ONE Although the golf team is a small group, it is an enthusiastic one. The home matches are held at the Wachusett Country Club. The team is headed by Mr. Willaim Foley. The seniors on the squad include Chuck Stevens, Scott Brearley, and Sean Welburn. 112 THE HURLIN’ MACHINE This spring was an amazing season for the girls’ softball team. With captains Deb Carelli and Noreen Verdini, the team came in second in their league. This enabled them to qualify for the Districts, which was a first for the school softball team. The team rallied over Hudson Catholic with a 12-10 decision. This win put the Lions in the District E Finals. Despite their valiant effort and seventh inning comeback the Lions just came up short, losing 8 - 6 . 113 atM RUN, JUMP, AND THROW The tradition of track was carried out by seniors Lisa Bryngelson, Stephen Priestley, Chris Murphy, Mark Barakian, Mike Witkus, Scott Casey, and David Lindberg. The Lions’ pride was evident once again as several members of the squad qualified for individual Districts. The coaches for the boys’ and girls’ track teams are Mr. Dave Keeney and Mr. Dick Priestley. 114 GET INTO THE The boys’ tennis team once again had a fine season. The team was led by seniors Bob O’Connell and Ed Greenough. Mr. Herbert Maynard is the coach for the team. SWING OF THINGS Mr. Ted Traver, as coach of the girls’ tennis team, has much to be proud of as his team has done well over the years winning countless Southern Worcester County League titles. The team, led by senior captain Ginger Watkins, qualified for the team Districts. In the final round of competition the Lions lost to Notre Dame Academy. 115 :■ ' jj 9L Hr Mte K ' 1 ' i- • ,V ; f tfHU ' TlCS j •■■ ’ ' ■ ■ « • . i ' • - , . . ■ v J .;-, : m 0 Htm , « , V: ■••• ' V, “■ « ♦ ' V r 4r% f ■ r H « V f ♦ ♦.♦ : • ♦ iV ♦ M.t ♦ ’ %«r r “• •. V V- Ldi 123 VIVE LA FRANCE With the help of Miss Scopelliti, this year’s French Club has done some really fun things. The most exciting event this year was the trip to Quebec taken by French IV and V. The French students did a lot of sightseeing and saw many beautiful parts of the city. We did a lot of exciting things and met a lot of interesting people. We had a great time, and it is an experience that we’ll never forget. ABRAN LOS LIBROS The Spanish Club works very hard to prepare for the Foreign Language Christmas party. Mrs. Hudson, the advisor, helps them make pinatas, and helps them with their production of a Christmas play. The club does a lot of exciting things that include going on different field trips to study the Spanish culture. 124 FUTURE PICASSOS The Art Club members are a dedicated group of people who share their talents with the school as well as the community. Many of these members have exhibited their work at a variety of different places such as the Worcester Art Museum. They raise money by working very hard and by selling their work in the form of Christmas cards and calendars. Mrs. Boosahda dedicates much of her time to her students, and none of these events would run smoothly without her help. Her help and encouragement is greatly appreciated. TICKET SALES The Graphic Arts Club helps us to keep track of what’s going on by printing up athletic schedules, programs, and tickets. With the help of Mr. Silven, they act as official printers for the school, and are greatly appreciated by everyone. McGRAIL’S NAVY Mr. McGrail leads the A.V. Club in aiding teachers with the school’s equipment. Without these dedicated students, projectors, overheads, and video recorders would not be able to be used by the school. 125 COME JOIN THE BAND Many students at West Boylston High School participate in band. This talented group puts on many excellent concerts throughout the year. The Football Band puts on an enjoyable half-time show. The band also participates in the Saint Patrick’s Day and Memorial Day parades. Mr. Maynard has been encouraging talented musicians for years, and will continue to be a supportive advisor for many years to come. SING!! Mr. Maynard also directs the chorus. The Chorus is another talented group who performs at both the Christmas concert and the Spring concert. During the spring, they put on a concert for the senior citizen group in town. They are always received warmly and always sound terrific. A SWINGING GROUP The Jazz Band is a group of musicians who really like to play. They practice once a week under the direction of Mr. Maynard. Their concerts include the Spring concert and the concert at the Common during the West Boylston Days. CENTRAL DISTRICT ■r r- • ' ? y ■ -I The Central District members were chosen according to talent. They only practice three times a week, but the rehearsals last for three hours. As a result, the concerts are always beautifully performed. 127 LET IT SNOW! The Ski Club takes many exciting trips to various slopes up north, as well as participating in the afterschool ski program at the nearby Wachusett Mountain. Students of many different levels make up the club; there are many novices as well as experts. With the enthusiasm and carisma of Mr. Maynard, everyone has an enjoyable time at the slopes. HARD WORKERS Seniors who want to experience the working world are given the chance to do so through the Work Study program. They are allowed to leave school early each day to rush off to work in many different places and fields. These students get the necessary experience, and a taste of the “real” world. The National Honor Society is compiled of students who accumulate a designated grade point average and devote their time and abilities to the school and community. There is an annual ceremony which honors the students’ scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Mrs. Holmlund, with much enthusiasm, took over all the responsibilities as the advisor. The first order of business was electing officers. Heather Smiley was elected President; Mary Papandrea, Vice-President; Dorinda Stevens, Secretary; and Noreen Verdini, Treasurer. The National Honor Society joined with the Student Council to give a Christmas party for the senior citizens. They contributed fruit baskets, which were raffled off. For the first time, they helped with the Special Olympics. This volunteer work proves that this organization is and will continue to be a hard working group of students. ( The Math Club has many hard different schools to compete in math working students. It is headed by contests. Mrs. Doherty. This club travels to “M ATHLETES” 129 WHAT’S COOKIN’? With the help of Mrs. Gruszka, the Home Economics Club devotes much of their time to the community. They entertain people of all ages by visiting the Oakdale Nursing Home with baked goods for the elderly. They also provide the school with baked goods for open house and dramatic activities. STRICTLY BUSINESS The Businenss Club, headed by Miss Salmon and Miss Lawrence do all the work that typists, stenographers and accountants do when they work, but with one exception — they do it for the school. GYPSY Gypsy was the 1985 school musical. Under the direction of Mrs. Grace Leslie and John Leslie, the show was a hit. The two leads were given to the talented Annette DeVillers and Jenni Colangelo. Most would say the next stop would be Broadway! LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION The many wonderful dramatic productions put on by the Drama Club would not be possible without the help of Mr. White. The Drama Club works very hard throughout the year to ensure that the Senior Play, Play Competitions, and the musicals all run smoothly. Their help and dedication is greatly appreciated 131 “YOU OUGHTA BE IN PICTURES” The Camera Club works very hard to improve their techniques in picture taking. With the help of Mr. Bouvier, students learn to take and develop their own pictures. i •% ' M J t | iy i 132 Our school is full of enthusiastic athletes who participate in many varsity sports. JBBm. ■ w — JBk w ] f Hr The Archery Club is made up of students interested in target shooting. Under the guidance of Mr. White, these students shoot individually and remain active in their hobby. WHO’S RUNNIN’ THIS SHOW? The Student Council, with the help and support of their hard working advisor, Mrs. Hudson, does more for our school than any other club or organization. In addition to running the school store, doing afternoon announcements, running the concession stand, and meeting every week to keep student-administration communications open, the Student Council still finds time to give the elderly a Christmas party, organize a blood drive, and participate in a Secret Santa exchange with the faculty. President Kris Cleary, Vice-President Meri Robinson, Treasurer Chris Klein, and Secretary Julie Thomson keep things under control and running smoothly. 133 fST • mm ' I ' fjpMVi £ ■ • ■jlflf 1 Hi ' i. « rw it A: ' 1 r. ■ $ £ .1 l: Mike L jeunesse Lisa Lamberto Scott Langhill Pam Larose Donald Lindberg Kenneth Lovejoy John Magera Eileen Mautner Chris McDonald Kevin McEnaney Janet McGuiggan Pam McMillan Sean McNeill Russell Miller Kelly Moher Lisa Montville Kim Morris Andrea Mullen Tony Papandrea Jeff Pasquale Chris Pukaite Travis Rotti Brian Scanlon Tara Sheehan Marc Sherwin Richard Simmarano Maryjo Solitro Kathleen Spratt Nicole Stanley Erik Tarkiainen Julie Thomson Joe Tsagronis Carolann Watkins Pam Welcome Darlene Woodill Charles Crane has triple vision.
