Everyone had heard those rumors about being flushed in the bathroom or getting beaten up by upperclassmen. It was frightening to go from being the big kids down at Edwards to being the youngest students in the high school. Those first weeks were full of questions. How do you join a fall team? What if your locker is really far from your class? What time does C lunch end? When do you have to be in your homeroom? We all made it, though, and we were well enough established to win Play Competitions in our freshman year with our hilarious presentation of It ' s Cold in Them Thar Hills . By the time sophomore year rolled around we were old hands at high school life. We laughed at all the baby freshmen running around and asking stupid questions about homerooms and fall sports. It seemed like our school ' s routine had been a part of us for years, and it was as though we had never gone to Edwards. That was the year of the final Spree Day when the now-famous tug-of-war took place. It did not matter whether we won or lost (although we all know who really won], what was important was the fact that our class had pulled together as a unit and worked for something. It was a sign of our growing up. Our junior year sped by in a flurry of excitement. Getting our licenses opened up a whole new world; there was no more my parents will drive one way to contend with on the weekends. The Centrum opening up right nearby also offered us a concert for practically everybody ' s taste. It seemed like we had just started planning it, when suddenly our Junior Prom was upon us. The fateful date of Friday the thirteenth did nothing to dispel our excitement, even when we had to switch restaurants midstream. As we watched the class of 1983 graduate, it hardly seemed possible that we were next in line and had only one year of high school left. o t o; if B This fall it was strange to think that this would be the last time we would watch the leaves change colors from our familiar, secure positions. As we sat on the bench and watched the little kids file in it seemed like eons since our freshman year. Not only had we all developed our own personalities, but our class as a whole had become a closely-bound group. Fall blended quickly into winter which rapidly changed to spring. We wandered through the halls humming strains of Pomp and Circumstance , being fitted for caps and gowns, and trying to escape exams. As we exited the parking lot beeping our horns, we may have exuded a feeling of relief, but there is still a shadow of those quaking freshmen in each of us. So now, as you grasp your diploma, stop to think just for a minute and remember how it felt to be confused about C lunch. SHOOTING STARS Erin Sheehan proves that homework causes gray hair. The show must go on ... and the show did go on. March twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth West Boylston High School put on its sixth annual spring musical, Funny Girl . Mel Lavoie was a huge success as Fanny Brice, and Randy Finn portrayed Nick Arnstein dashingly. Other stars from the class of 1984 who helped to bring the house down included Kim Akins, Kristen Boosahda, Michelle Chenard, Dave Cullen, Jenni Dick, Lisa Fallavolita, Ron Goodale, Karen Hill, Erin Mahoney, Cindy Pearcy, Debbie Slack, and Amy Smith. The enjoyment of the cast showed through on stage as they danced and sang their way through the life of Fanny Brice. The show wouldn ' t have gone on as well as it did without all the help from Mr. Monroe, Mr. Leslie and Mr. Maynard . . . and, of course . . . what would a show be without all the devoted entertainers . . . those lovers of the stage? Lisa Fallavolita and Michelle Chenard do the funky chicken. Ron Goodale poses a question. 86 ALL PSYCHED UP We started this year ' s pep rally with a few selections from the band; the fight song got everyone in the right mood. Then the cheerleaders pepped everyone up to beat David Prouty. Next there was an inter-class competition. Four people from each class dressed and undressed each other while blindfolded. The seniors won this contest, as well as the entire Homecoming Week. Mr. Maynard, band director and enthusiastic member of the faculty, was presented with a plaque for his spirit and support of the students throughout his years at West Boylston High School. He has always encouraged the students to do their best in every area of the high school community. Afterwards, the court was announced and Ron Goodale was named Homecoming King of 1983. Ron has consistently lent his energies and enthusiasm to many activities and organizations, and is known to all as a spirited leader. With the band playing “Happy and the cheerleaders doing their routine, the football team charged through the hoop. A lollipop, a movie stub, and a pearl ring were three of the items for which students scrambled. The class of 1986 was the winner. The day ' s theme for dress was Clash Day. Friday, in keeping with West Boylston ' s tradition, was Blue and White Day. A pep rally was held in the gym last period of the day. Andy Beardsley catches some rays during the scavenger hunt. Just The Way You Are was the theme song of this year ' s Homecoming Dance, and it represented the friendly spirits cultivated throughout the week. The dance brought to a peak the excitement which had been building, and when Stardust began to play the students let loose and danced wildly. At ten o ' clock. Homecoming King Ron Goodale introduced the Homecoming Court, and they danced with their escorts to Just The Way You Are . The court consisted of Sherri Greene, Marianne Mullen, Kris Cleary, Linda Woods, Darlene DiBara, Meri Robinson, Lisa Fallavollita, and Erin Mahoney. During the Court Dance Ron crowned Erin Mahoney the Homecoming Queen of 1983. The Homecoming Queen represents the enthusiasm of the students and is traditionally someone who has done a lot for her class as well as the entire school. Erin Mahoney has been on the Student Council for four years and has run many activities. This year she was the captain of the cheerleaders and the Homecoming Committee Chairperson. Mrs. Bositis has always been a great help to the school by advising the Homecoming Committee for many years. Both people should be commended for their contributions to the school. A reception was held in the cafeteria, which was decorated with the Songbird motif. This gathering was an opportunity for parents and friends to visit with and photograph all the prom-goers in one place, eliminating the need to race from house to house in order to take group pictures. Decorating the cafeteria that afternoon brought our class closer together and helped to keep us busy as we awaited that very special evening. From the reception, couples drove to the Driftwood Linda Woods and Ron Goodale on the dance floor. Mr. O ' Connor crowns Debbie Slack Prom Queen as the Court looks on. Afterwards there was dancing to the music of Masquerade, and the class of 1984 showed our usual spirit and enthusiasm on the dance floor. At 10:00 Debbie Slack was crowned Prom Queen and her Court, consisting of Janet Carelli, Laura Clemence, Jenni Dick, and Kim Kenneway, was also announced, Later on, Craig Halloran received the Fleetwood Mac album Rumours — which includes our theme song — for being the funkiest dancer. AN HONORABLE GROUP In April of 1983 Scott Baker, Kris Boosahda, Natalie Danford, Randy Finn, Karen Hill, Shelley Sirmans, and Debbi Slack were inducted into the National Honor Society. The ceremony honored the students ' scholarship, leadership, character, and service. They participated in the traditional candle-lighting ceremony and heard speeches from Mrs. Marshall, Mr. O ' Connor, and Mr. Sullivan before taking an oath to serve their school and community. Mrs. Gagel took over the post of National Honor Society advisor this year with much enthusiasm. The first order of business was electing officers. Scott Baker was elected President; Randy Finn, Vice-President; Natalie Danford, Secretary; and Shelley Sirmans, Treasurer. The National Honor Society joined with the Student Council to give a Christmas party for the Senior Citizens. They contributed food baskets, which were raffled off, and truly enjoyed serving the elderly. This party exemplified the good-heartedness of the organization. The wind was whipping that night, but these adventurers found the breathtaking view of Quebec lit up at night was worth braving the cold for. After a somewhat disappointing breakfast the next morning they set out for a sightseeing tour. The group was split in two and put on two minibuses which shot perilously through the narrow streets. (This experience was even more breathtaking than the view of the previous night.] It was an exciting, if speedy, introduction to the city. Afterwards the group partook of a sumptuous buffet in Every other year the French IV and V classes travel to Quebec for four days. The French-speaking members of the class of 1984 took their trip in October of 1982, and for those who went it was one of the highlights of their high school years. They set off early on October sixteenth in high spirits. The bus ride was a long one, but the students entertained themselves so that the eight-hour ride seemed to speed by (well, almost]. They arrived in Quebec that evening, exhausted but glad to be there. Maybe some other students would have run to their rooms at the Hotel Clarendon to shower and to catch up on much-needed sleep, but these kids couldn ' t rest when there was a city to explore! They wandered the cobblestone streets and browsed through shops until dinnertime. After a delicious meal in a quaint, typically French restaurant they went for a ferry the revolving Astral Restaurant atop the Concorde Hotel. Stuffed to the gills, they headed to the Citadel for a tour of the famous fortress. They also visited the Musee du Fort for a sound and light show depicting some famous battles in Quebecois history. Dinner that night was at a crepe restaurant, and the night was topped off with a few hours of mingling with the natives at a roller-skating rink. The next morning began with a visit to St. Anne de Beaupre — the church of miracles. Its walls are lined with crutches and braces of crippled people who have been cured there. They stopped for a they met and lunched with students their own ages. All too soon the trip was over and they were on the bus heading back to West Boylston. The magnitude of these falls is incredible, and those who ventured too close found themselves soaked to the skin. That night there was an exciting episode involving the capture of two thieves, which concluded with Lynn Bernstein assisting the police by identifying the criminals. The students took caleche rides that evening. (A caleche is a horse and buggy in which one rides around Quebec City.) The only activity on the last day was a visit to a high school where HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEST BOYLSTON! Kris Cleary and Erik Tarkiainen gaze at the fireworks. The mummers join the parade. On September 10 and 11, 1983, the town of West Boylston celebrated 1 75 years of being a close-knit community. The weekend was a busy one highlighted by many events, including a five-mile road race and a blazing bonfire in Goodale Park Saturday night. On Sunday an exciting and colorful parade marched through West Boylston. The weekend peaked with a fireworks display. Spirits were running high throughout the entire weekend as the residents of our town reaffirmed the fact that West Boylston is a friendly and neighborly place to live. Once again the class of 1984 demonstrated our originality with the Senior Ball on December 2, 1983. Not only did we celebrate the first snowfall with our winter theme, but the ball was also stag so that more people would have an opportunity to attend. Landlord Ben ' s provided an excellent setting and delectable food. Mike Drake, Kim Kenneway, Lynne Enhus and her date await the meal. The Senior Ball is less formal than the Junior Prom and was one of our last chances to be together as a class. Joe Consolie and the Rockets entertained us with a variety of music ranging from the meaningful strains of “Precious and Few to some of our favorite Christmas carols. 103 Paula Flanagan, Joe Borci, and Lisa Larose cuddle up. Our class has a lot of hams, and these outgoing actors and actresses were put to good use on December 9 and 10, 1983, in the Senior Play — Meet Me in St. Louis . Cheryl Carlson put on a stellar performance as Rose, and Erin Mahoney, Lynn Lajoie, and Natalie Danford were equally terrific as her sisters. Ron Goodale did a wonderful job as their father (with Karen Hill as his wife] and Jim Jardine completed the family as the fifth child. Other members of the cast were Andy Beardsley, Kris Boosahda, Dave Cullen, Randy Finn, Russ Howard, Gayle Petty, Shelley Sirmans, Debbi Slack, Amy Smith, and Judy Young. Though not in our class, Niki Stanley did a superb job as student director; she was assisted by Lisa Fortin. ON WITH THE SHOW The class of 1984 has always excelled in Play Competitions. Freshman year we captured the hundred dollar prize with our hilarious presentation of It ' s Cold in Them Thar Hills . This hillbilly comedy was a real attention-grabber. In 1982 we presented “Wake Up and Love , a take-off on “A Midsummer Night ' s Dream . This year, for the second time in thirteen years, the West Boylston Lions defeated the Grafton Indians. The day ended with a victorious score of fourteen to twelve. This was achieved by the great defensive line of the Lions. All the players made the game a fantastic one in Lions ' history. This game highlighted a solid season for the Lions. They got back on respectable footing in their league after several poor seasons. Receiver Jeff Cranston played especially well and was named to the Telegram and Gazette All-Star team. The club also takes field trips throughout the year. Amy Capman, Janet McGuiggan, and Kelly Maynard create a pinata. DO-RE-MI A large part of many students ' years at West Boylston High School is their participation in the Band or Chorus. These two talented groups put on exceptionally good concerts this year. Their programs included a little bit of everything from classical to popular and were a huge success at both the high school and the middle school — where they presented an afternoon concert to the delight of the younger students. Mr. Maynard has been encouraging talented musicians for years, and continued to do so this year. “CHEESE” The Camera Club ' s main purpose is taking pictures for the yearbook. West Boylston High School traditionally puts on fantastic dramatic productions, and this would not be possible without the Drama Club working all year. This year the stage was refinished to provide a better setting for the musical, Senior Play, and Play Competitions. The Drama Club also works with set design, props, and costumes to ensure that students at West Boylston High School will be acting up for years to come. They learn how to run a business, but the club is not just made up of future entrepeneurs. Many of these skills are needed for other purposes and these students are getting a head start on their futures. MIND YOUR OWN STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW The Archery Club is an individualistic organization which brings together students who shoot target practice on their own. Mr. White (an avid yeoman himself] organizes them to encourage them in their hobby. The Ski Club takes many exciting trips to ski areas up north as well as participating in the after-school ski program at nearby Wachusett Mountain. It is one of the largest and friendliest clubs we have. BOOK- WORMS The Library Club assists Mrs. Stewart wit h all her tasks as librarian. They help to sign books out and to return them to the shelves, as well as keeping the library a neat and quiet place to study. HIT THE SLOPES CAPITOL HILL This year the Student Council took a different approach to their work. Instead of concentrating on rules and regulations, the group decided to sponsor more activities which would promote good feeling in the school. In addition to running the school store, doing afternoon announcements, running the concession stand, and meeting every week to keep student-administration communications open, the Student Council raised money for an elderly lunch, gave an elderly Christmas party, and started a Secret Santa exchange with the faculty. They also instituted Dress-Up Days in December. It is a time to socialize with friends and prepare for the next class. As the school year goes on, some lockers become second homes for people, others become pigsties. No one can deny that those precious few minutes spent burrowing among books or exchanging gossip are as b ig a part of school as the hours spent in classrooms. ! - no books? teenage heartthrob Greg Ramstrom, Scott Nelson, and Tim Gould greet friends, PASSING TIME BETWEEN THE BELLS You are now entering the Twilight Zone. bon appetit! 141 I Tina Ledoux, Kim Kenneway, and Lynne Enhus aid two residents of the Oakdale Nursing Home. A large number of us hold down part-time jobs besides handling the responsibilities of school and extra-curricular activities. A lot of students work in town at restaurants like Pinecroft and stores such as The Fair and Audrey ' s Hideaway. We realize that one page could never be enough to repay her for everything she ' s done for us. Mrs. Bouvier has an incredible ability for creating rapport with kids and that talent has made her our assistant, our teacher, and our guide — but most importantly it has made her our friend. It takes a very special person to share herself with a time-consuming project like the yearbook, and Mrs. Sharron Bouvier is just that. Thank you, thank you to an outstanding woman. There were too many people on the yearbook staff to list in this space — and we thank every one of you sincerely — but two people really put themselves out for us and we feel it necessary to express our gratitude to Karen Hill and Erin Mahoney for their willingness to help out at any time. Lisa Larose was our diligent ad salesperson. Also, thanks and good luck to Mary Papandrea. Mr. Edward Bouvier was a tremendous help to us and this book is filled with examples of his photographic talent. Thanks to Mr. Winthrop Handy for his patience with our demands. Mr. Ronald Schofield, Dr. Richard Danford, Mike Drake, Rachel Kardon, and Gayle Petty also donated pictures to the 1984 Lion ' s Roar which were greatly appreciated. Love and thanks, Natalie and Shelley 166 § KX «««««« «««««««« ««««« $ V x x x NX Nx NX NX X N NX V x NX NX NX x NX X X X X O X x NX o X NX NX $ X V i.4 y X XN N N gg X X X XN XN XN X XN XN XN XN XN X XN X X | XN V x A X X X X NN XN XN XN XN XN NO XN XN XN XN XN N -v XN N XN N XN XN XN XN XN XN N XN g g XN x XN XN XN XN X XN xN XN XN XN £ g X XN X XN g g X ' 0 XN XN XN X x XN C XN XN XN gN XN XN XN XN X XN XN XN $ g X X 1 N XN p J GOOD-LUCK TO THE CLASS OF 84 WALTER C.
