Carrying on the Spirit of the Lion . . . 4 6 Through tradition, the warmth and friendship that has been shared throughout the years has been kept alive. PUBLIC LitfHA WEST BOYLSTON, ? THE SPIRIT OF THE LION The Class of 1983 wishes to dedicate the Silver Jubilee Edition of the Lion’s Roar to the Spirit of the Lion. “The Lion, the West Boylston Jr. Sr. High School mascot, is the epitome of our spirit. There is a certain magic in West Boylston students that is spelled INVOLVEMENT. The small school with a great heart which allows the student body to enthusiastically participate in a comprehensive academic program and a multi-faceted extra-curricular program. Students moving from art to mathematics and then on to shop class followed by athletics and perhaps an evening band or play rehearsal . . . overwhelming? Not for West Boylston students. They are the heart of the Lion.” Mr. Herbert Maynard 8 “I can say without reservation that this year’s senior class has exemplified the following ideals: excellent attitude, excellent participation, excellent attendance, and excellent ability to work with each other. On all of our teams, the morale remains high although being a small town with many activities to participate in makes winning difficult at times. School spirit drives the students to give their best, work hard, and show character in any situation that they may be faced with. Mr. Ronald Ekblom “The competitive, academic enthusiasm of W.B.H.S. students is continually growing to answer tomorrow’s challenges.” Miss Mary Salmon “If there is one thing that has stood out at West Boylston Jr. Sr. High School since the school opened, it has been the outstanding school spirit displayed by the students and faculty. A certain pride is exhibited at all school functions and activities which has always been a tribute to the students and community. Anyone who has ever taught at West Boylston, attended the schools, or lived in the community cannot help but be impressed and proud of the student body and school spirit at West Boylston High School.” Mr. Carlton J. O’Connor 9 Tradition An uncharted path On which we tread. 10 Leaving our footprints for others to follow . BEAMAN MEMORIAL WES ' 11 We leave these traditions behind To forge our own ways , 12 But always guiding us are the Dreams, Hopes, And ideals The Class of 1983 would like to express our sincerest appreciation to Miss Anne Cogswell. Seldom is a class presented with the opportunity to work with such a devoted and caring individual. A special bond has formed between advisor and students. She has helped us to mature by guiding us, yet encouraging us to always make our own decisions. These qualities assured us that if we fell, a strong friend would always be there to support us. As we grow, Miss Cogswell’s compassionate ways will be an inspiration to us. For this we thank Miss Anne Cogswell. MISS COGSWELL ADVISOR MENTOR ERIEND 16 KELLY JEANNE AVERY Kel . Producing a yearbook is a challenging and time consuming project that requires the cooperation of many people. We would like to express our appreciation to Mrs. Sharron Hubbard and Mr. Winthrop Handy for helping in our endeavor. The following people, although they were not directly affiliated with the Lion’s Roar, dedicated their photographic talents to the yearbook: Natalie Danford, Dr. Richard Danford, Mr. Bouvier, and Mr. Schofield. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Christopher Stanley, our yearbook photographer, for his endless hours of work in taking and developing our black and white photos. Without his ability to work quickly and efficiently, completing this book would have been a difficult task. Thanks Chris!! A very special thanks goes to our fellow classmates who, although very active in other extra-curricular activities, dedicated their free time to the yearbook. Kathleen Mahoney, Susan Lindberg, Beth Robinson, and Heidi Cook were with us side by side doing photo layouts and writing copy. Kim Boosahda and LeeAnn Stewart graced the book with their artistic creativity. Laura Danford, Gary Mullen, Paul Aziz, and Brian Teague were responsible for selling advertisements and controlling the finances. Brian and Heidi also took many photos that were very much appreciated. With the help of these people, we met our challenge to make the Silver Jubilee Edition of the 1983 Lion’s Roar a traditional yet unique collection of memories. Play competitions, sponsored by the Student Council, were held on April 16, 1982. This is a traditional event that began in 1976. Through the years, the Competition has intensified as has the quality of the presentation of the plays, and the enthusiasm of the classes. The winning play this year was “The Rise and Decline of Wilbur’s Empire”, presented by the Class of 1983. The directors of this play were Kathleen Mahoney and Steve Woods. Set design was created by Andreas Klein and Brian Teague, with help from many other members of the class. As always, the Play Competitions were a great success due to the competitive spirit of the students. “Cheer up guys; in college there are no demerits!’’ 82 PLAY COMPETITIONS Then I said, “No Mr. Anderson, I don’t want a piece of your candy!” “Yes, he was our vice principal, our own dear sweet vice principal!” Wilbur’s ego gets out of hand and his sisters, Connie and BettyLou, decide to take drastic measures. They pretend that he’s dead by mourning for him while he’s in the room. Their only mistake is forgetting to include Mr. Maxwell. His upset stomach caused him to leave the room while they devised their scheme with their mother and Hercules, Wilbur’s friend. Thus, they had to pretend that he was dead also. Eventually, Wilbur realizes the error of his ways and promises to reform if he could be alive once more. His sisters break down and explain to him that he is still among the living. ■ - W WP.SS- f 0 v 60 ' STON’ THE CAST Wilbur Maxwell Paul Aziz Mrs. Maxwell Susan Lindberg Mr. Maxwell Jim Bartlett Hercules Michael Gallant Connie Maxwell Laura Danford BettyLou Maxwell Kerry Boire “LIFE O’ THE PARTY’’ The Class of 1985 Cast Members Freddie Chris Murphy Stacy Miki Fortin Mrs. Harrison Kim Christo Mr. Harrison Stephen Priestly Mindy Darlene DiBara Bob Sean Welburn Jack Jim Foreman Cliff Mark Barakian Frank Matt Supernor Mary Linda Carlson Judy Lynne Newton Bernadine JoAnn Bruhn Student Director Jenni Colangelo Assistant Directors Mary Papandrea Roberta Hayes “Shoot a mile!” 84 “WAKE UP AND LOVE” “I know this love potion is good, it sure worked on Erin!” The Class of 1984 Cast Members Robin Goodfellow Mr, Watkins Mrs. Goodey .... Thanks goes to Mr. White, Mr. Leslie, Chris Stanley, the back stage crew, and all of the “hams” who love the spotlight. Performers of the Class of 1983 who contributed to this success were: Phil Blaisdell, Lisa Colangelo, Heidi Cook, Cindy Crane, Katy Harris, Fred Herx, Andreas Klein, Kriss Knoebber, Sue Lindberg, Kathleen Mahoney, Marie McGrain, Sharon Murphy, Bob Smiley, Chris Stanley, and Liisa Tarkiainen. As the song goes, “ . . . when the curtains open to the roaring crowd, you can feel it all around you ...” Let’s hope the acting tradition continues at WBHS, and we’ll always be “living in the limelight”! Hypocrisy at its best? “I love you, a bushel and a peck!” 87 FUN IN THE SUN It was questionable as to whether the Class of 1983 would have their last Spree Day. The administration felt that Spree Day activities did not capture the attention of enough of the students. Yet through many struggles the Student Council convinced the administration to give it another try. There had to be a compromise somewhere; therefore, a specific date was not announced and the activities were confined to half of the day. The traditional softball, tug-of-war, egg toss, and pie eating contest, combined with the new games: three-legged soccer, the dunking booth, and the sieve game, proved to be successful in interesting all students. Chimera, a local band, performed as the classes competed against each other. The Class of 1984 were the victors of the day. The Class of 1983, in the three years that they have participated, have consistently won the softball game, the pie eating contest, and the tug-of-war. BEAMAN Mtiwunmu WEST BOYLSTON, MASS. 01583 Jeff “I can eat anything” Burke digs in to the winning pie for the third year in a row. 88 “A TASTE OF PARADISE” At the beginning of May, the countdown begins. The final preparations are made for the dinner, dance, and decorations. The tickets go on sale at $40.00 a couple. Tuxes are being fitted, hair appointments are being set, and last minute alterations are being made on the gowns . . . IT’S THE PROM! Two days before, everyone gathers to decorate the gym in a heavenly motif. Finally, the day arrives and the students attending the Prom are let loose at noon to prepare for the night’s activities. At four o’clock the boys, bearing bouquets, pick up their dates and head for an open reception at Heidi Cook’s house. After an enjoyable dinner at the El Morocco, everyone returns to the school for dancing and refreshments. Following The Grand March, Miss Danielle Barton is crowned as Junior Prom Queen. Her Court is as follows: Kristen Knoebber, Laura Danford, Liisa Tarkiainen, and Christine Zona. Couples leave the El Morocco after an enjoyable dinner. In accordance with Mr. O’Connor’s favorite tradition, he crowns Danielle Barton as the 1982 Prom Queen. 90 MAY 14, 1982 “Smiles, smiles everyone!’’ Marie McGrain follows the dance contest winners, Mitchell Sanders and Lisa Colangelo. Debbie MacKizer and Bill Supemor during the traditional Grand March. 91 THROUGH The theme of the seventh annual Homecoming was based on the song “Through the Years”, by Kenny Rogers. Students demonstrated this theme by dressing for Baby Day, Kiddie Day, New Wave Day, and Career Day. This theme was carried over to the daily activities which were: a baby food eating contest, a scavenger hunt, a new wave contest, and a soap opera trivia contest. The week was ended with the traditional Blue and White Day and a pep rally. THE WEEK . . . THROUGH THE NIGHT . . The highlight of the week was the Homecoming dance held on Saturday, September 25, 1982. As the Court danced to the theme song, “Through the Years”, Paul Aziz, the Homecoming King, crowned Laurie Buck as the 1982 Queen. 94 Traditionally, the Court is chosen by their classmates as being the girls with a lot of spirit and enthusiasm. The 1982 Homecoming Court consisted of Pamela Larose, Kim Akins, Darlene DiBara, Daneille Barton, Queen Laurie Buck, Erin Mahoney, Meredith Robinson, and Christine Goyette. 95 THROUGH The football team psyches themselves up for the game. The field hockey team celebrating their 1-0 victory. Melissa Mard pulls ahead early in the race with the other cross country runners close behind. On Saturday, September 25, 1982, the West Boylston Lions athletic teams met to do battle with the Woolies of Millbury High. Although a valiant effort was made by all, the field hockey and boys’ cross country teams succeeded in defeating the opposition. With determination, Fred Herx, goalie, leads his teammates into action. The boys’ cross country team striding toward victory. AND 25 . . On September 16, 1982, the 1983 yearbook staff invited members from the W.B.H.S. class of 1958 to an informal reception. Our intent was to present a clearer picture of today’s youth as well as to better understand the lifestyle of yesterday’s students. Faculty members Carlton J. O’Connor and Anne Cogswell recalled the changes in the school system and in student attitudes. Yearbook staff members Kristen Knoebber, Laurie Buck, Sharon Murphy, and Beth Robinson also spoke. Laurie Buck expressed our appreciation of tho se faculty members who have been with this school system for twenty-five years, including Mrs. Elaine Gagel, Mr. Ralph Pendleton, Miss Anne Cogswell, Miss Angelina Scopelliti, Mr. George Smalanskas, and Mr. Carlton O’Connor. Beth Robinson and Sharon Murphy compared the every day life of a 1958 teenager to that of a 1983 teenager respectively. Mr. Gerald Silven reminisced with his former classmates about common teenage experiences. While enjoying refreshments, the staff members and alumni made comparisons of their times spent at West Boylston High. YEARS LATER BEAMAN MEMORIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY Sarah Goodale, 1983 graduate, and her mother, Mrs. Beverly Goodale 1958 graduate. A cherished memory. GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES On December 11 12, the Senior Class presented their play, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. The Cast, headed by leads Kristen Knoebber, Laura Danford, and Andreas Klein succeeded in carrying out an excellent performance. The Love Boat sails again. HAVING A BALL On November 19, 1982, the Seniors rocked the White Cliffs in Northboro at our Senior Ball. One of Worcester County’s best bands, Tornado Alley, made the night a party by playing great music and getting everyone psyched. Despite the “mono epidemic” and the instant mashed potatoes, it was a good night, and the close feeling that we felt will remind us of what it’s like to be a member of the class of 1983. Rosebud, the Crisco Kid, and company! 102 107 r r C0HOO N n COLORS ON THE HELMETS The tradition of football was carried on by seniors Bob Cooke, John Carrigan, Jim Bartlett, Ken Openshaw, Mark Webb, Brian Teague, Matt Morin, Chris Welburn, Steve Woods, Mike Gallant, Ron Harper, Curt Quinn, Tim Nagle, and Ernie Pappanastos. The Lions proved themselves to be a team which never gave up hope and stuck together until the end of the season. Rated as underdogs, the boys proved that they were competent, especially in the Thanksgiving game versus Grafton. On Homecoming Day, the team made a valiant effort, but lost as a result of injuries. All in all, the team represented our school in a way of which we can be very proud. V ' l S S This year, the football cheerleaders enthusiastically helped to carry on West Boylston’s football traditions. They heightened the spirit of our Homecoming Pep Rally and carried the ceremonial hoop for the football players at the beginning of each game. Led by co-captains Kelly Avery and Kristen Knoebber, the squad included Seniors Sharon Murphy, Kathleen Mahoney, Danielle Barton, Maria Marrino, and Linda Brearley. WE GOT THE BEAT Directed by Mr. Herb Maynard, the football band kept the spirit of the fans up in the air. Each game the band played some of our favorites, such as “We Got the Beat” and “The Lion’s Fight Song”. The band, on Thanksgiving Day, strutted their stuff, as they marched onto the field and formed a star. From that, they created our school logo, WB, and then proceeded into a cornucopia, representing the day. At the end of the routine, balloons filled with helium were released into the sky. RAH! RAH! RAH! At the Homecoming Pep Rally, head football coach, Richard Priestley, challenged the school to support their teams through wins as well as losses. We, the fans, accepted that challenge and showed that we are willing to support our friends and relatives in their endeavors. We represent our school and want our competitors to know that we are proud. 113 KICKIN’ AROUND 114 Led by experienced tri-captains Andreas Klein, Fred Herx, and Bob Smiley, the Varsity Soccer team had an eventful season. Seniors Kreg Hesemeyer, Greg Wallace, and Mike Maino, along with the captains, held opposing teams to five tie games. The school, this year, was privileged to have two outstanding players who were recognized by the community. Andreas Klein was named to the Central Massachusetts Soccer Coaches’ Association All-Star Team. Bob Smiley was chosen to be on the Telegram and Gazette Division II Honor Team. The JV team also had an exciting season. K Vf 115 DRIBBLIN’ . . . Pushing, flicking, and scooping ’em too. The Varsity West Boylston field hockey team lead by Coach Beverly Schofield and senior co-captains; Kerry Boire and Lisa Colangelo, ended their season with a record of 4-8-3. Seniors; Kim Boosahda, Tessie Bruhn, Laurie Buck and Susan Lindberg leave behind four years of hard work and determination. We leave these following traditions to the J.V. team: the loop, the bus songs — “The MIT song”, “Peppy’s Saloon”, “A Hole in the Bucket” and many others. “We live the life we chose, we’d fight and never lose for we were young and sure to have our way.” Top: S. Glickman, C. Labossiere, J. Dwyer, C. Goyette, G. Watkins, M. Fortin, D. Stevens, A. Mercurio, G. Petty Bottom: M. Esteves, D. Heath, K. Teague, L. Fallavollita, J. Bruhn, C. Bruhn, T. Sheehan, M. Shenard, Coach Grace Leslie, Manager S. Sirmans. 117 BORN TO RUN This fall was an amazing season for the Girls’ Cross Country team. With Melissa Mard as their captain and only senior, the team came in second place overall in the league. Melissa, also, came in first place in the Southern Worcester County League meet. Mr. Bouvier is the coach for the team. Andrew Quinn and Scott Baker lead the Boys’ Cross Country team this fall. Under the coaching of Mr. McGrath, the team compiled an outstanding record. FOUNDING THE PAVEMENT 120 With returning seniors Matt Morin, Mike Maino, Chris Welburn, Steve Woods, Jim Watkins, and Mark Webb, the Varsity basketball team was very successful. Led by captain, Jim Watkins, the Lions began the season with four wins. They were in- spired by the eager fans who antici- pated an excellent season and got what they expected. The JV team also had an awesome season. 01S8 , BO ' f ' STObi- a aSS 121 JOE’S CHERUB’S The Varsity Girls’ Basketball team, led by Mr. Priestly and co-captains, Laurie Buck and Tessie Bruhn, began their season well with a record of three and two. Although, the team was inexperienced, the dedicated seniors, Kim Boosahda and Judy Rotti, along with the captains, carried the team into a successful season. The JV team, lead by Mr. Garofoli, also began the season on a bright note. 123 This year the energetic basketball cheerleaders gathered school spirit at all our basketball games. Having placed fifth in the David Prouty Cheerleading Tournament in 1982, the squad continued to carry on an enthusiastic season. The squad was led by co-captains Danielle Barton and Kristen Knoebber, and included Seniors Kelly Avery and Kathleen Mahoney. VIVE LE CERCLE DE FRANCAIS! This year’s French Club has done some really fun things. Led by president, Laura Danford, the Christmas party was a huge success, especially the play put on by the seniors, “Comment la Grinch a Vole de Noel”, starring Fred Herx as the Grinch. The most exciting event this year was the trip to Quebec taken by French IV and V. We saw many beautiful parts of the city, as well as meeting some interesting people, running into thieves, and going sightseeing on our own. It’s an experience that we’ll never forget, and we’d like to thank the underclassmen who helped raise money for the trip. We hope that they have as much fun as we did! 128 ESPANOL IS IN THE SOUL This year’s Spanish Club proved to be more active than ever with the help of Mrs. Hudson, the advisor, and B. Robinson, M. McGrain, K. Morris, K. Clearly, the Spanish Club officers. Each month they planned an event centered around some aspect of the Spanish culture. These events included making bonuelos, singing Spanish songs, making pifiatas, and seeing a musical based on an important political figure of Argentina. I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas 129 CONCERT BAND beaman memoriae PUBLIC LIBRARY WEST BOVLSTON, MASS. 0 158 3 STAGE BAND 130 The Music Department at W.B.H.S. has always been enthusiastic and involved, and this year was no exception. With Mr. Maynard as the ever-encouraging, always optimistic director, they played and sang everything from classical music to the latest popular hits. The concerts were well-received and they made all the practice worthwhile. When you’re a Lion, it’s very easy to become Hooked on Music — and stay hooked!! MUSIC IS BASIC The Junior High Chorus and Band, led by Mrs. Johnson, are the origin of our Senior High Chorus and Band. If it were not for the music skills taught and learned in these organizations, we would not have the awesome Senior High musicians that we do have. 132 COLOUR MY WORLD The Art Room is a place where everyone is given the chance to be creative. The Art Club members are a dedicated group of people who share their talents with the school as well as the community. Their contributions this year included making Christmas gifts for the elderly, exhibiting work at the Beaman Memorial Public Library, and selling their work in the form of Christmas cards and calendars. The members of the Art Club are lucky to have such a hard working, loving individual as Mrs. Boosahda for an instructor. HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT The Camera Club was busy snapping pictures all year. The members and their advisor, Mr. Bouvier, helped with the production of the yearbook, The Lion’s Roar. The Archery Club is made up of students interested in target shooting. Under the guidance of Mr. White, these students shoot individually and remain active in their hobby. 134 FUTURE CELEBRITIES? Do you see yourself in the white spotlight? W.B. is more than blessed with its share of thespians and the Drama Club is made up of an assortment of “stage people”, from set crew to costumes, to design, to those who love to be stars! The Varsity Club’s members are the students who participate in Varsity athletics. Steve Woods, president, organized a faculty-student basketball game, which raised money for four scholarships which are given to seniors who plan on attending college. 135 MEDIA MANIA The Library Club members are a devoted group of people who help Mrs. Stuart with library work. Their work is gratifying and they’re getting experience for their future. Advised by Mr. McGrail, the AV Club helps the faculty with the audio-visual machines, such as projectors, overheads, and video recorders. Without these dedicated students, these new-fangled machines might not be able to be used by the school. 136 LET IT SNOW! ! The Ski Club started off the year with a fantastic fundraiser — selling spirit caps that said “West Boylston.” The enthusiasm was super, Mount Wachusett had just opened new trails and a new lodge, and weekly lessons were underway. There was only one problem: on January eleventh, the weather was fifty-seven degrees, and it hadn’t been much better all winter. Looks like they’d better start looking forward to next year! HAVE YOU GOT THAT SPIRIT? Well, this year’s Pep Club certainly did! With the help of Miss Taylor as advisor, and Kristen Knoebber as chairperson, the club held a fund raiser, and came to the football and basketball games to support the Mighty Lions. 137 OVER-WORKED Seniors who want to experience the working world are given the chance to do so through the Work Study Program. They are allowed to leave school at 12:45 each day, to rush off to work in many different places and fields. Mr. Smalanskas is the advisor. Often times these students stay on the job for long hours and come home feeling ‘overworked’. Members of the Graphic Arts Club help the school and community printing athletic schedules, tickets for dances, and programs for various drama activities. Mr. Silven, the advisor, also carries his share of the workload. No matter who does the job, it always gets done, but the club still goes AND UNDERPAID 138 ‘9 to 5’ STIR IT UP With Kelly Avery as their president and Mrs. Gruszka as their advisor, the Home Ec Club devotes much of their time to the community. Each month a number of students visit the Oakdale Nursing Home with baked goods for the elderly. They also The Business Club, headed by Miss Salmon, and Miss Lawrence, don’t work from ‘9 to 5’. They do all the work that typists, stenographers, and accountants do when they work, but with one exception — they do it for the school! 139 THE WHODUNITS The Student Council, with their advisor, Mrs. Hudson, does more for our school than any other club or organization. Who fills our beloved soda machine? Who sells us that much awaited candy bar at the end of the day? Who tells us what is happening in the school? Who sells the hotdogs at football games? The answer to all of these questions is those students in each class who dedicate many hours of hard work to all of us. IT’LL BLOW YOUR MIND! The National Honor Society is compiled of students who accumulate a designated grade point average and devote their time and abilities to the school and community. Under the leadership of Laurie Buck, they presented the elderly with fruit baskets at Christmas time, give scholarship to deserving seniors, and tutor some underclassmen. They are advised by Miss Salmon. 140 James Jardine David Johnson Lynn Lajoie Mark Leavitt Susan Macomber Brian McGuiggan Scott Nelson Brendan O’Brien Benjamin Peterson David Roberts Richard Robinson Brent Rose Melinda Sarkisian Mark Scanlon Mark Schofield Timothy Scott Erin Sheehan Debora Slack Kim Spratt Tom Swalec Deborah Thompson Erin Tully Margaret Wild Judith-Ann Young Also: K.
