PROPERTY OF Seaman Hemnrtal IJuhltr library West Boylston, Mass. Presented by the Class of 1980 Received June 1980 No. WEST BOYLST ON, MS 01583 FALL John Denver Reflections in the water, Like shadows in my mind, Speak to me Of passing days and nights and passing time. ✓ r ■ v The falling leaves Are whispering. Winter’s on its way. I close my eyes Remembering The warmth of yesterday. It seems a shame To see September Swallowed by the wind. And more than that It’s oh so sad To see the summer end. 8 And though the changing colors Are a lovely thing to see, If it were mine to make a change I think I’d let it be. 10 The Class of 1980 Dedicates This Issue of the Lion’s Roar To the Memory of NICHOLAS CECCHINI “Oh, Chips, I’m so glad you are what you are . . . Schoolmastering’s so different, so important, don’t you think? To be influencing those who are going to grow up and matter to the world . . -James Hilton, in “Good-bye, Mr. Chips” Nicholas Cecchini was a teacher of distinc- tion and an extraordinary man. For twenty years, until his retirement last June, he was a vital part of West Boylston High School: a soft-spoken and unfailingly patient voice of reason, an understanding friend whose daily example inspired deep respect, admiration and affection in those around him. Like Mr. Chips, the subject of James Hil- ton’s touching little novel about the life and death of a beloved schoolmaster, Mr. Cec- chini “had quiet and gentle manners.’’ He was a kindly, compassionate, uncommonly decent human being whose views, though sometimes old-fashioned, never seemed out of date be- cause they were “so thoroughly honest; and because — because his eyes were brown and he looked charming when he smiled.” Like Mr. Chips, he taught and often quoted Latin — a supposedly “dead” language that he somehow made vibrant, a springboard for modern lessons. “Student motivation comes from the youngsters’ seeing a teacher’s re- spect for his subject,’’ he once said. “A teacher must also have an understanding of the young and a willingness to listen to them . . . If everything is left in the classroom, it is not worthwhile. A subject should leave the classroom. From the classics he revered, and particu- larly by personal example, he imparted to class after class of Latin and Spanish students a high regard for words, for knowledge, and especially for their fellow man. He was, in every sense, a humanist. His warmth and humility moved us. It made us better people. To us he was St. Nick, and not only at Christmas. If we considered him virtue personified, he 14 was nevertheless approachable. He had a smile and an encouraging word for everyone, and always, ALWAYS time to listen. There was sometimes something hushed and sacred, almost church-like, about his classroom, but he also had a wonderful sense of humor. Youthful mischief was no sin in those thoroughly honest brown eyes. “A little levity is permitted,” our Mr. Chips assured several generations of West Boylston students, recalling a favored story from Latin I which demonstrated that ‘‘Roger Bacon, underneath his academic garb, was a bit of a rogue.” In Mr. Cecchini’s classroom, we de- veloped what James Hilton called ‘‘the sud- den love of boys for a man who was kind without being soft, who understood them well enough, but not too much, and whose private happiness linked them with their own.” He was a humble man, utterly without pre- tense. Even after earning his doctorate from Boston College in 1965, he preferred to be called ‘‘Mr. Cecchini” rather than ‘‘Dr.” Pupils called him “Dominus” — roughly the Latin equivalent of “Sir,” but spoken with less formality than fondness. To everyone else — the cafeteria workers, for instance, whom he regularly helped wash pots and pans if he had a few spare minutes — he was simply “Nick.” He hardly ever had to be a disciplinarian, because misbehavior in his class might have been interpreted as personal disrespect, and that was unthinkable. And even students who had little interest in conjugating ancient verbs tried to live up to his motto — “Scholares Latini sunt semper parati . . . Latin scholars are always prepared” — because they did not want to disappoint Dominus Cecchini. Like the fictional Mr. Chips, the real-life Nicholas Cecchini was part of his school and its daily life, taking an interest in every stu- dent, every subject, every sport and extracur- ricular activity. And like Mr. Chips, he also enjoyed having students, past and present, drop by to visit him at home. He lived in Clinton, in a section called “The Acre,” which he often reminded us was a neighborhood where everyone knew and helped each other. Mr. Cecchini found great joy in life — in teaching, in working the soil, in playing the organ and accordion, in tinkering with machinery, in driving the trucks that fasci- nated him. Several years ago he took up jog- ging; able to go only a few yards on the track behind the school at first, he worked at it until he was able to run miles every day. He was in many ways an inspiration, a remarka- ble man. Nicholas Cecchini retired quietly after the school year that ended in June, 1979, with characteristic lack of fanfare. Just like Mr. Chips: “At his own request there were no more farewells or presentations ...” In early September came the disturbing word that he was in Clinton Hospital, under- going tests. It seemed somehow ironic that he should fall ill right at the start of the first school year in two decades of which he was not an integral part. Then on October twelfth came the stun- ning news that Nicholas Cecchini had died at the age of forty-nine. For this, none of his Latin scholars could possibly be prepared. But perhaps we should remember him by re- calling what the fictional Mr. Chips said on his deathbed. Overhearing a bystander whisper that it was a pity he never had chil- dren, Chips replied: “But I have, you know . . . I have . . . Thousands of ’em ...” Nicholas Cecchini had thousands of chil- dren, too, and we shall never forget him. Re- quiescat, Dominus. Good-bye, Mr. Chips. — Barry Lorge, Class of 1966 15 16 Junior Prom April Dreams” . . . Junior Prom, April 27, 1979 . . . Old Mill . . . Music by Joshua Tree . . . Marlene Lavoie, prom queen . . . The classes had worked long and hard in hopes of winning the hundred dollar prize for their class treasuries. The Class of 1982, the competition winners, presented the play “Genius, Jr.,” a comedy of conflicts. The Class of 1981 presented “No Time for Skirts, a spoof on high school social af- fairs, and the Class of 1980, “Great Smokies,” a comedy of southern hillbillies. The Class of 1980 placed second in the com- petition. 20 “ANYTHING GOES ” Anything Goes played for two consecutive nights last spring at the West Boylston High School auditori- um. The cast included Laura Berg as Reno Sweeney, John Tsagronis as Billy Crocker, Grant Sanders, Debra Borci, Eric Lantz, and Deborah Cooney. Mr. Steven White directed the entire production. He was assisted by Jacqueline Gemma, student director. Mr. John Les- lie capably handled the music and choreography. This second annual musical production was enjoyed by all! 1 - X V. , 1 1 1 y4n o Sr t iuBr : SPREE DAY May 29, 1979 Softball 9:00 Frisbee Throw 9:15 3 -Legged Race 9:45 Volleyball 10:00 Softball Throw 10:15 Big Wheel Race 10:30 Foul Shooting 10:45 Tug-O-War 11:00 Egg Toss 11:30 Platform Stand 12:00 Destiny 1:30 UH k m ' r Z it HOMECOMING 79 West Boylston High School’s Fourth Annual Homecoming Week began on September 24, 1979. Each day there was a competitive inter- class activity including a “House of Cards” contest, a “Beggar-man Thief’ contest, and a ‘‘Sesame Street” scavenger hunt. The Junior Class was the top scorer. Friday marked the traditional home- coming pep rally. The football players led the cheers, while the “Pillow People” cheerlead- ers played football! Saturday was a completely victorious sports day beginning with the field hockey game, followed by a cross country me et, and cap- ped with a memorable football game versus David Prouty High School. Our evening’s dance, “Time in a Bottle”, fea- tured Joshua Tree. The even- ing was highlighted by the 1978 queen’s, Lynne Bjorklund, crowning of Fran- cine Henault as this year ' s queen. Francine’s court in- cluded Danielle Barton, Kath- leen Mahoney, Roberta Mer- curio, Irene Derosches, Cathy Buonomo, Joan Lepore, and Lynne Bjorklund. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY National Honor Society membership symbolizes scholarship, ser vice, character, and leadership. Members of the Society have at Good food. Good fun. Good mistakes. A dinner for the fac- ulty? Good grief! Advisor: Mrs. Gruszka. Library Club work is gratifying to its members because stu- dents actually contribute to the operation of an essential school service. It isn ' t just a simula- tion; it ' s for real. LIBRARY CLUB A-V CLUB GOVERNMENT CLUB Government Club activities in- clude discussions and public debates about controversial is- sues, appearances by distin- guished guest speakers, and mock elections. Members gain a better understanding of cur- rent events. 150 GRAPHIC ARTS CLUB GRAPHIC ARTS, a two year program designed to expose the interested student to print- ing, silk-screening, and photog- raphy. The emphasis here is on creativity and fun. BUSINESS CLUB 152 MUSIC MAKERS from both the full time and part time band. The stage band is a competitive concert band whose members must audition to join. These four groups are the basis of the instrumental program at the high school. FULL TIME BAND The West Boylston High School music program takes many forms. Full time band, about thirty strong, meets five times each week. The forty part time band members meet three times weekly. The March- ing Band, those brave souls who perform in the rain of September, the snow of November, and the heat of Memorial Day, is formed PART TIME BAND 153 At right: STAGE BAND Below: Informal WIND ENSEMBLE At bottom of page: CHORUS THE STAGE BAND, the most swinginest band of them all, plays everything from Dixieland to Rock. In 1979: a second place finish in the district competitions. PEP CLUB The Student Council rep- resents the student body in three areas: governing school operation, making policy, and co-ordinating ac- tivities. Among the activities of this year ' s Council were a fund-raising pitch party, the school pictures program, the Winter Carnival, the Red Cross blood drive, and Spree Day. The operation of the School Store is also under the direction of Stu- dent Council members. Pro- ceeds from fund-raisers are used to benefit the Student Council Scholarship Pro- gram. Others funds are dis- persed to buy special items for the use of the general student body. The West Boylston Student Council has been very active in state and national student gov- ernment programs. STUDENT COUNCIL 155 WORK STUDY i i i Seniors who plan to apply for full time employment immedi- ately after graduation have the opportunity to participate in the Work Study Program. This innovative scheduling approach allows members of the Senior Class the opportunity to gain work experience before gradu- ation. Participants in this pro- gram leave school each day at 12:45 to fill jobs in the com- munity. Much of their aca- demic work is accomplished on a contract basis with their teachers. DRAMA CLUB 156 LITERARY MAGAZINE The SKI CLUB had everything going for it — good spirit, a good fund-raiser, good equipment, good people — except for one thing: snow. The 1979-80 winter, at press time (January 20th) was the second most snowless winter in history. Worcester Airport had offi- cially recorded less than ten inches this season, and more than seven of that had fallen in one day — October 10th!
