May 5, 1977 TO: Mr. Carlton J. O ' Connor, Principal rROM: Frank Lepore, Guidance Director Subject: Disposition of Class of 1977 Attached please find the final disposition for the Class of 1977. For the most part, high school plans have been formulated. We are, however, still in the process of attempting to place some members of the class as will be noted from the list. Persistent problems continue to arise in financing college education. In some cases, alternate plans had to be made where financial offers were unable to meet need as determined by Parents ' Confidential Statements, Basic Educational Opportunity Grants, Mass. State Scholarship Programs, etc. Middle class fami- lies with incomes between $15, 000 and $25, 000 are hit the hardest in trying to determine need. Yet with college costs at private colleges well above the $6,000 annual level, financing a college education is indeed difficult for families in this category. It is for this reason - and practical career goals - that many students are now entering 2-year community college terminal programs. The traditional careers such as teaching are being by-passed with a realization of the limited opportunities. Unfortunately we also anticipate an over supply of people in the health professions in the near future. The big drive in the late 60 ' s and early 70 ' s by the health professions has now been oversold and placement is becoming more and more limited. This was the basic reason for nearby Memorial Hospital School of Nursing abasing out its program. With education and health professions difficult to enter, • many career opportunities will be lost. Cn the employment field, the Work-Study Program continues to provide excellent opportunities as a wedge for employment after graduation. The Early Graduation Program has also permitted students to get a jump on the labor market in June by entering the market in February. While area personnel managers have been very cooperative, there is little doubt it is a buyer ' s market and firms are more and more selective in clerical opportunities. Cur students are competing with 4-year L.A. graduates who have failed to obtain employment connected with their college major and are substituting this with clerical employment. Whatever success we have had in this field is due mainly to the fine efforts of Mrs. Gagel and Mr. Smalanskas . Statistics will be found below but we still believe statistics can be meaningless. If our graduates are happy and successful, then we believe our school system has been successful regardless of graduation statistics. Finally we would like to express our appreciation to the School Committee, Superin- tendent of Schools and administrative members for their continued support and encouragement of the guidance program. Our secretary, Mrs. Mary Mulryan, has been invaluable in support of our students and counselors as have Mrs. Mary Kennedy and Mrs. Helen Ryan who always are willing to assist in our efforts. We also believe, however, that the most instrumental educational factor for these stu- dents is the faculty of the elementary and secondary schools who work diligently and consistently with our students. Respectfully submitted, Frank Lepore
