' ' A-V ' • L- . ■■ ■ pv -. ,vV7 ■•■ ■ ' . ■ Our Collection The Beaman Memorial Public Library ' s mission is to provide services and materials in a variety of formats to help patrons of all ages meet their personal, recreational, informational, independent learning and educational support needs. The staff places a special emphasis on individual services and responsiveness to patrons. Materials include children ' s materials, large print items, electronic and print reference sources, local history resources, magazines and newspapers, audio books, videos, as well as the fiction, non-fiction and paperback collections. Patron requests for additions to the collection are accepted. The library provides access to the collections of other libraries through inter-library loan. Requests for materials from other libraries may be made at the Main Desk. Registration The Beaman Memorial Public Library welcomes registrations from all residents of Massachusetts whose town libraries maintain current certification from the Mass. Board of L ibrary Commissioners. To register, a person need only present some form of identifi- cation that includes name and current address and fill out a short form. Children are issued cards when they are able to print their name, but parents can check out materials for younger children. A parent ' s signature is required for children in grades 6 and under, however, special arrangements can be made if a parent is unable to sign the form. A fee is charged for the replacement of lost library cards. Patrons may check out materials without their library card, but may be asked to present some form of identifi- cation. Any person who registers assumes the responsibility of borrowing materials and using library facilities according to the rules and policies set forth by the Board of Library Trustees. Parents and guardians assume that same responsibility for minors. The Board reserves the right to withdraw privileges from any person who violates library rules and policies. History of Community Support In May 1875, a bequest of $100 from the estate of David Lee Child was designated to start a public library in the Town of West Boylston. After a local appropriation and contributions from interested citizens, the first public library was established in 1878. First housed in school buildings, it was later moved to Town Hall in the valley which was ultimately flooded to accommodate the Wachusett Reservoir. In 1911, just after the opening of the Reservoir, George Calvin Rice, a descendent of Ezra Beaman, the father of West Boylston, proposed to have a new public library built if the town would purchase the tract of land at the junction of Newton Central Streets. This was accomplished and the Beaman Memorial Public Library was dedicated on September 6, 1912. This history of community support continued through the years in the form of dedicated trusts and donations of memorial materials. In 1996, the community followed this tradition of support and authorized the library trustees to apply for a grant which would allow for a much needed renovation addition project. Although there were minor alterations to the interior to accommodate increasingly diversi- fied collections and the addition of Reference and Children ' s services, the exterior of the building remained unchanged until 1998. The construction of a spacious addition and the renovation of the existing building have allowed the library to comply with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, to update technology systems, and to provide the space for excellent service to the community for many years to come. 7 , The Friends of the Beaman Library Who are the Friends of the Library? The Friends are people like you who believe in the library and its mission and wish to support this valuable community resource. Friends members conduct an annual membership drive, book sale and other fundraising activities in order to provide funds for the library newsletter mailing, wonderfully enriching children ' s and adult programming, computers and tech- nology equipment and other supplies and materials needed to help our library be the best it can be. Further, as a Friends member, you join your voice with others who support and treasure the library. To participate, individuals or businesses merely need to fill out a membership form and provide a small donation. The Friends group is managed by an executive board comprised of various members of the community who are voted into office at the Friends Annual Meeting in October. This committee meets approximately 6 times per year and directs the fundraising and general activities of the association. Members of the public are welcomed and encouraged to attend these executive board meetings, but attendance is not required for membership. Become a member and make a difference. OTHER Services Programs The Library offers many other services to the community. It provides a web site with library and community information as well as links to other World Wide Web resources. With the Friends, the library produces a quarterly newsletter, provides museum passes and offers a wide variety of programs for all age levels and varied interests. The Lankton Childrens Room offers various programs and activities for children and a Homework Help Center computer and other reference materials to assist young learners. The library includes space for community meetings for up to 80 persons and a local history room connecting present-day West Boylston to the library and community of the past. Federally funded with LSTA funds through the Massaehusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Only a stool marred its barren appearance. A single light shone upon the relic. Soon, a man of small stature appeared to the side of the stage. He hobbled slowly, almost deliberately to the stool and sat. Looking up to us, he uttered; MESDAMES, MESSIEURS. A small tale for your entertainment. A mere nothing — concerned with the Class of ' 76 and a ten year party; with time and eternity; with love and pain; and, of course, good and evil. In short, a trifle. If it amuses you, I have my reward. If it causes you to think, I crave your pardon. ALORS, let us commence. At 9 p.m. of June 4, 1976, a mad procession of graduates led by chauffer BILL COGSWELL has- tened toward THE PARTY. Bill was followed closely by SUZANNE HAYES and RUSTY BROOKS who had failed to overtake CARL BRUHN as he galloped past on his horse yelling, Scoot over, you banana-head. MIKE MORIN place a close fourth in his foot race. When the next 10,000 graduates, including ALAN SEVERANCE, piled out of JEFF PENDLETON ' S truck, they found the Cogswell home transformed into a partier ' s paradise. LISA BRIGHAM, KYLE JOHNSON, DARLENE BARNES, LINDA GALLUPE and MARK DE- DERIAN arrived next. They entered, finding the party in full swing. MAUREEN GREANY remarked that she had lost 10 pounds since arriv- ing. A crowd soon formed around DEWEY KNOX as he autographed copies of his best seller, 99 WAYS TO INSTALL A MUFFLER, OR HOW TO LET YOUR FRIENDS RUIN YOUR CAR. Other celebrities in attendance were GEORGE FRATAN- TONIO, popular nude centerfold for the NEWS RECORDER; KIM KANERVA and JOAN ZICKELL, co-chairmen of the WFL (Women ' s Football League); and SCOTT JACOBSEN, the well-known Olympic sprinter. Excitement reached its nadir as SCOTT Pun GOODNOW, the only member of the cycle gang, Heaven ' s Devils, dismounted. On Sunday, January 29, 1977, non-denomina- tional chapel services were held by Sisters CATHLEEN CAOLA and KATHRYN WREN from Our Lady of Perpetual Motion. SHARON BUCKLEY provided accompaniment for the singers in a rousing chorus of Alice ' s Restau- rant. Background vocals were provided by MARTHA Class Clown ALEXANDER, JUNE Swivel BIANCHINI, CHRISTINE Tina PUSA- TERI, and DONNA Great OHRISTO. DAN WILSON initiated the dance contest with an amazing display of Bark and Boogie. DEANA GULLET took 1st place as the lone contestant in the West Boylston 2nd Annual Bump Contest. Other award winners were STEVE FORSBERG for tap dancing on platforms, CHERYL BOUSQUET in the Robot Contest, and MAUREEN ROCHE, in the hustle contest. LYNNE HARPER and JOSIE DIBARA come attired as drums so that Billy could beat on them. Sometime during 1978, a gigantic poker game was organized. BOB NOBLE, DAVID HARRIS, KEVIN FITZGERALD, and JACK O ' BRIEN consti- tuted the players. PAUL MORRISON and JOHN LAJOIE argued over who would be the dealer. When food ran out in 1979, TONY ROTTI led a delegation in search for supplies. The delega- tion included LYNNE lACCARINO, LORRAINE HENAULT, CARIL SUKIS, JUDY GEMMA, JUDY DICK, and LEE GREENFIELD. They made quick trips to Friendly ' s, IGA, Dunkin Donuts, Mac- Donalds, and A P, returning with enough munchies to last until 1980. After the feast, TIM WATT, BRIAN ELA, and TIM MOSMAN fell asleep while JIM HALL and CHRIS Fog JACOBSON started their tennis match. Chris, cheered on by SUE HAY, soundly defeated Jim who threw his racket and broke a light. A.V. men GEORGE SYLVESTER, MATTHEW BUCK, and BRUCE MESSIER had the problem fixed by 1981. 1981 was a joyous year. Festivities were tempo- rarily interrupted for JOHN ARSENAULT ' S wed- ding. While PETER TITUS presented John with 180 the beer tab for the bride ' s finger, KAREN TOWNSEND dispatched her gossip column to an anxiously awaiting COSMOPOLITAN. Some other joyous occasions occurred in the sports world: TOM O ' NEIL returned to the party after quitting the NBA; PAUL CARACCIOLO became a ping-pong champion in China; WALTER McQUISTON finally scored a goal on STEVE MERCURIO in the hockey game outside, and DAVID Goobs DYLEWICZ and JOHN HANDY completed their 5,000th round of golf on the impromtu 19-hole course recently formed. JACK CHEVALIER and MIKE CROSSMAN ac- complished the incredible feat of balancing two girls apiece while skiing. Female volunteers in- volved in the record included NANCY PUSTIS, STEPH WHITCOMB, DONNA WALEN, and PAULA WHITCOMB. 1982 soon became tlie year of discoveries and advancements for the members of our class. PAULA HANRAHAN opened her speed writing school. ANN O ' CONNOR reported her new cure for baldness. DAVID MOOREFIELD opened his own company, Mort ' s Manual Labor. BRUCE CARVILLE replaced Fonzie on HAPPY DAYS. JILL CHRISTENSON became the national T.V. spokesperson for Post Grape Nuts and DIANE CONNOR took a tour of the USA as a Long and Silky girl. During the New Year ' s Eve party of ' 83, DEB RAYWORTH, MARY SANDERSON, and KRIS ORNE called for a new batch of brownies. LYNNE McHUGH and PAUL MENARD eagerly brought them piping hot. One day as PATTY COOKE and PATTY JOSLYN left for work, they collided with DAVID HAIG who was still trying to pop a wheelie. BRIAN BUCHYN, called over to examine the damage, determined that the broken radio had caused the accident. JEFF CHAPMAN was called to tow the wreck to PAUL VALINSKI ' S garage. All injuries were referred to DR. LIDYA YEGUPYAN. An on-going search still continued during the year, by newly appointed Police Chief JAMES GODDARD and Sargent RAYMOND WAITE, for NANCY STARR, a prime suspect in the mysteri- ous disappearance of Mils. Scopelliti. BRUCE the Casonova Computer LESLIE was appalled by all this as he attempted to capture the hearts of GAIL LARSON, JILL BALDERELLI, JENNIE BARTLETT, and JUSTINE PALUMBO, all of whom had broken up with JIM YANKOWSKAS that day. Sparks flew as MEG CHEEVER and LINDA AZIZ, co-owners of a laundry chain, argued with JOHN GRAHAM over the proper way to wash towels. CARRIE TRASK joined the argument still professing the ills of Clorox. We began the new year with comedian DAVID PETERSON doing his nationally famous impres- sions of punctuation marks. We liked his comma best. The year of entertainment was continued by the new Show Band, Jethro Till (sic). The group featured RICK McKEOGH on lead guitar, PATTY PELLERGRINI on lead (high) vocals, and PAM HOHNE, CHERYL DOWGERT, and DIANE ZONA on background vocals. Out on the lawn, profes- sional soccer superstars JOHN CARLSON and MARK MESSIER demonstrated the skills which led their team to such a successful season. The year of 1985 was marred by perpetual rainstorms. Carpenter BRUCE PETERSON, as- sisted by ANGELA MORAN, were contracted to build an ark. That evening, the christening was performed by Father KEVIN BANKS. WENDY BOLIVAR provided the rainbow. Soon after the last die-hard partiers, including SUE WARMAN, DONNA GALLANT, and SUE HALLORAN, departed and clean up began. A work crew consisting of MONICA PRANKUNAS, MARTHA DELONG, and PATTY LECK was supervised by custodial engineer and part time disc-jockey FORD STEVENS. After about three hours of work, the entire project was completed and order was once again restored. The Cogswell family rejoiced as their ten year exile drew to a close. That is the end of our little piece, MES- DAMES, MESSIEURS. The theatre empties. The doors shut. Silence descends. The problems remain. Adieu.
