Ski Club 9, 10, 11, 12; Work Study. GO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE AND HASTE, AND REMEMBER WHAT PEACE THERE MAY BE IN SILENCE. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT SURRENDER BE ON GOOD TERMS WITH ALL PERSONS. SPEAK YOUR TRUTH QUIETLY AND CLEARLY: AND LISTEN TO OTHERS, EVEN THE DULL AND IGNORANT; THEY TOO HAVE THEIR STORY — AVOID LOUD AND AGGRESSIVE PERSONS, THEY ARE VEXATIONS TO THE SPIRIT. IF YOU COMPARE YOURSELF WITH OTHERS, YOU MAY BECOME VAIN AND BITTER; FOR ALWAYS THERE WILL BE GREATER AND LESSER PERSONS THAN YOURSELF. ENJOY YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AS WELL AS YOUR PLANS — KEEP INTERESTED IN YOUR OWN CAREER, HOWEVER HUM- BLE; IT IS A REAL POSSESSION IN THE CHANGING FORTUNES OF TIME. EXERCISE CAUTION IN YOUR BUSINESS AFFAIRS; FOR THE WORLD IS FULL OF TRICKERY. BUT LET THIS NOT BLIND YOU TO WHAT VIRTUE THERE IS; MANY PERSONS STRIVE FOR HIGH IDEALS; AND EVERYWHERE LIFE IS FULL OF HEROISM. — BE YOURSELF. ESPECIALLY, DO NOT FEIGN AFFECTION. NEITHER BE CYNICAL ABOUT LOVE; FOR IN THE FACE OF ALL ARIDITY AND DISENCHANTMENT IT IS PER- ENNIAL AS THE GRASS. — TAKE KINDLY THE COUNSEL OF THE YEARS, GRACEFULLY SURRENDERING THE THINGS OF YOUTH. NURTURE STRENGTH OF SPIRIT TO SHIELD YOU IN SUDDEN MISFORTUNE. BUT DO NOT DISTRESS YOURSELF WITH IMAGININGS. MANY FEARS ARE BORN OF FATIGUE AND LONELINESS. BEYOND A WHOLESOME DISCIPLINE, BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF. — YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE UNIVERSE, NO LESS THAN THE TREES AND STARS; YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE HERE. AND WHETHER OR NOT IT IS CLEAR TO YOU, NO DOUBT THE UNIVERSE IS UNFOLDING AS IT SHOULD. — THEREFORE BE AT PEACE WITH GOD, WHATEVER YOU CONCEIVE HIM TO BE, AND WHATEVER YOUR LABORS AND ASPIRATIONS, IN THE NOISY CONFUSION OF LIFE KEEP PEACE WITH YOUR SOUL. — WITH ALL ITS SHAM, DRUDGERY AND BROKEN DREAMS, IT IS STILL A BEAUTIFUL WORLD. BE CAREFUL. STRIVE TO BE HAPPY. Found in Old Saint Paul’s Church. Baltimore; Dated 1692 35 like the ivy that clings to wall Rod McKuen Admittedly somewhat pessimistic in its tone. Rod McKuen’s, The Ivy That Clings To The Wall” is symbolic perhaps more of a previous generation than the current one. His message seemingly runs the gamut of life much like Shakespeare’s All The World’s A Stage.” And yet, as McKuen points out in his final stanza, seasons can and do change. The ivy, after all, blossoms out full leaf at various seasons of the year. It is in this blossoming that, I think, lies the hope for all of us. Your days are not withered and small” at high school graduation. Your days should be full of enthusiasm and a desire to contribute and to enjoy. To contribute to the happiness of each person you meet is extremely reward- ing; to enjoy the many fine things in life can be gratifying. If you enter a new stage of life with a negative attitude, the negative attitude will probably prevail . . . and you will be unhappy. There are negative aspects of life . . . but a positive attitude can help not only to negate the troublesome things but also to contribute to a solution of problems that are prevalent. This is no cliche to conquer the world.” You must conquer yourself first! Contributions will be made by an elimination of greed, pettiness, and selfishness — all major characteristics you must eliminate in making a better life for you and your fellow-man! As you graduate, you do have a new world” a more beautiful world about you! You can and should take advantage of it. The ivy that clings to the wall is a steadfast, sturdy one — your life can be too! Mr. Charles N. LaPrade Wo are like the vine on the wall When we cling for support to survive. But the young should not need to recall. They can be hold and alive. That we wither at last may be true, And our dreams may falter and end, But at least we are able to do, To dream, to act, and befriend. At some time someone built the wall And planted the ivy to grow Green in the spring, and in fall To cheerfully color and show There is more to life than despair. However dull the days seem, And the burden of doubt and of care Will be lightened if we can dream. Mr. Thomas A. Wood This is called teamwork, I furnish the brains. You furnish the muscles, aches, and pains. I’ll pick the best roads, tell you where to go . . . Dr. Seuss Assistant Principal ; Carlton J. O’Connor Guidance, Work Study ; F. Lepore, G. Who’s a ski hum?” 81 The season began under the heat of the sun With practices of sprints and laps and ail that fun.” We soon became ready to lake on any foe Even though the weather changed from sun to snow. We played each game with all our might And left our opponents in quite a plight. We won game after game and tied only three. Our team became known as the best in the county. The offense was fantastic, the defense superb. The undefeated record we did not disturb. One of the things we shall remember most of all. Are not the refs, the goals, or the falls. But the bus rides to and from the fields With faithful Ding-Ding” at the wheel. The singing, the joking, and all the fun Went along with all the games that we won. Teamwork, we owe to our success Of becoming the Number One team — the Best! O-IMc ' i wm rSSSi SSif « •: • 82 VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY TEAM — K. Condon, K. Cronin, R. Higgins, D. Desroches, S. Nowak, P. In the autumn of 1972, The harriers sporting the white and the blue. Made their quest for the goal. To be undefeated, three years in a row. Most people said. Only time would tell. If these great talents. Could take the SWCL. Undefeated three consecutive years in the SWCL . . . 1st in SWCL ... 1st in Class C . . . 4th in Central Mass . . . 4th in the State . . . They never settled for a tie. They could be the best. As true athletes . . . Th ey settled for nothing less. With a fine turn out. The Lions of soccer proved to be stout. They dazzled many a team. Who thought they were weak. And captured games — just by a squeak. With thrifty goal tending. And forward lines who thought only of goals. The Lions of soccer proved to be a threat To any team that they met. They took their tolls. Scoring records raised And they went to amaze The toughest competition of the SWCL Whom the Lions, which to beat. Fought like hell. Although the record on paper Was not winning Not enough can be said Of their spirit and fight. To whom victory is not its only delight. Matt DeWaele SOCCER TEAM — B. Howe, B. Richardson, M. Lane, S. From late August to early November We worked so hard, we ' ll always remember. You saw us down in the valley, home on the range. Among the rocks, dust and chuck holes so strange. Laps, sprints, cals, and sit-ups Ride right, defense, offense and push ups. Breakdown catwalk, waek people, niekle seats. Don ' t get pinned. React; we took a beat. We won our first two games, against tough teams. To win six more was our ultimate dream. Our dreams were shattered, we lost the next five games. But in our last we found a team to tame. The seniors ended their career in great glory. After four long years we ended a unique story. Hard work, sweat and blood for four years. To see it all gone. I’m sure there were hidden tears. Aharonian. Trying to keep our teeth from chattering, we walked the corri- dors of WBHS, looking for a familiar face — ANY familiar face. We finally got our own lockers, as yet unaware that the upper- classmen knew the combinations. Our ears are STILL ringing from the times Mr. Fisher hanged his hammer to get our atten- tion, hut we got revenge by stuffing papers into the holes of our desks. At least we knew the weather that year! We’ll NEVER for- get those weather charts. Our math was seasoned with music as we all learned to whistle Windy,” courtesy of Mr. Moynihan. Mean- while Miss Salmon’s girls heard Dream on!” and Don’t forget, girls, to bring your shorthand books on your date tonight and sleep with them under your pillow.” We had it pretty easy in the ninth grade and took advantage of the fact that we were no longer the babies.” We were UPPER- CLASSMEN! Our minds were filled with the flights of superman and how long would it take him to catch the atomic bomb that was dropped from the fifth floor before it hit the baby who was about to step off the sidewalk into a line of traffic. Although we were very often taken off guard by superman, we managed the ancient history POP quizes. Sometime during those two years we had come as you are day” which is just about the same way we dressed for the next two years (after the dress code was dropped). We realized financial success in the tenth grade to the tune of Going, Going, Gone!” With Mr. White as our faithful” advisor, our auction was a HUGE success. History was spent reading edu- cational” magazines or coloring maps. Everyone agrees that biol- ogy was the most fun,” especially those individuals who tacked frogs’ legs to the bulletin board and threw the eyes of disembodied fetal pigs around the room. Geometry was a first for all of us, and we’ll NEVER forget Mr. Griffin’s emerald green socks (with the little shamrocks) on St. Patrick’s day. Others were being enlight- ened in Cinema 302 with trips to Paris, Italy. Hawaii, and all the other available movies in the A.V. room, or learning the latest from Dear Abbey or Snoopy and Charlie Brown. Actually the newspapers were great for penmanship and English. A great deal of the eleventh grade was spent preparing for our Junior Prom, Enchanted Forest” (in between broom sales, that is!). English was the exciting” class that year, and chemistry was fun, even though we had to put up with Professor’s sulfer. Our one little problem was that lab during the new open campus. (Oh, so you had a standing detention for Thursday afternoon, did you?) History was sung to the tune of The Hunters of Kentucky” and proved to be . . . ah . . . ah . . . interesting! We were disappointed with Driver Ed. because all we saw was How to Steer Safely,” while the upperclassmen had promised us bloody movies. Someone must have decided we had seen enough blood in Health. Our senior year was the best one yet, and our ball, Camelot fit in nicely with our extremely successful play, A Connecticut Yan- kee in King Arthur’s Court.” We heard that someone thought it was a hit obscene with Annie’s little slip — Freudian Mr. Pendle- ton? We surely tray-sure our play-surable classes. All in all, it was bad. We’ve got a lot to look forward to, regard- less of what we’ve been through. (It’s been rough?) The Class of ’73 plans to he the first to graduate in an outdoor ceremony. No matter where we go from there, we’ll never forget the hallowed halls of WBHS. 99 GOULD FUNERAL HOME, INC. I’m goin’ on down to Goodale Park, gonna join in the rock and roll band, I’m gonna camp out on the land, to try and get my soul free . . . In June, 1981, the world is again ripe for another Woodstock; hut this time Goodale Park is chosen as the scene for the tremendous rock festival. Not surprisingly, the entire class made up a small hut impor- tant segment of the thousands of participants. At 7 o’clock am, John Morin and Steve Russo stopped their game of one on one to watch Donna ’keep truckin’ Nagle haul down the pool road in a ten ton Mach truck, packed with hundreds of amps and mikes with enough power to drown out the combined voices of Paula Naylor, Deb Masiello, Deb DePatsy and Cindy Hayes. The equipment was masterfully set up by Paul Nolan, Ron Schofield and Dan Borleis, who were sure their AV training would come in handy someday. Mo Renzoni lent a helping hand. While Don Almstrom was putting his car back together, Kasey Condon, April Whitcomb, and Debbi Hall agreed to set up the phony trees made of rug rolls and multi-colored tissues, and Judy Lovell and Karen Waite put up backdrops of gray stone for the perfect effect. Seth Derderian unloaded lumber from the ’cuda; which was assembled into something resembling a grandstand by Bruce Barnett and Dave Carville. They had barely finished preparations when Craig Thornton dropped off the first ten thousand fans to the park in his Volkswagen. Not easily visible over the crowd are Sally Gardner and Mary Anne Pasquale. Dave Sepavich, Godfather of the Lithuanian Cosa Nostra and John Swalec, President of the Polish Mafia arrived in the brown Oldsmobile. The crowd multiplied all morning, in spite of the fact that Cindy Wag- ner came, saw, and left. Diane Whalen arrived with Fran, Tony, Bob, Dave, Jack, etc. . . . , but Paula Rabbit” Amons only had time to hop in and hop out. Jimmy Nichols came late and left early as usual. At noon, emcee Brad Klar started the song and celebration with the announcement that Deb Allen called to say she was up-country and COULDN’T make it. Deb Aharonian, of course, was absent and Bob Hager had taken another vacation.” Then came the announcement that anyone not assigned a student parking space would have to move his car. Patsy Campbell, Daughter of the American Revolution, was then introduced to lead the salute to the flag, held very steadily by Bob Oliver. The first group on the program, printed by Jim Novia and John Payne, included Woody, Mike McCormick, Mark Spencer, Bob Winston at the drums and George Mike Jagger” Kelly. As they belted out Jumping Jack Flash, Annie Hennessey filled in classmates Patti Ciociolo, Kim Salluce, and Ellen Connor (all wearing matching dungarees and shirts) on all world and local events since graduation. They all replied in unison she knows, she’s been there!” Meanwhile Deb Howard filled in Andy Barr on everything to come, and she efficiently took down her forecasts in shorthand. The entertainers’ appetites were satisfied by McDonald’s hamburgers, imported by Sandy Booshada, while Ronnie (Dough Boy) Hanks passed out Carol Baker’s famous cookies only to Nancy Paige and Nancy Freeman. Paul distributed liquid refreshments from his well stocked Kula. Music was now provided in the form of an acid rock piano duel between the countries two most far out musicians, Dave Hawley and John Leslie. The voice of Vikki Hohne rang above the throng Strawberry and the Shortcakes” and Linds Mulcahy, Denise Girard and Laura Judd scoopied-dooped across the stage. James O’Brien made some money selling candy supplied by Eugene Dana. Jethro Tull’s new star flutist, Candy Sparks, sparked the night’s performance, along with Robbie Higgins on the electric violin. Later, strains of Tom Hansons’s falsetto soprano and Ray White’s clear tenor carried the tunes. Kim Ramsdell, who gave up a brilliant career as a radical to teach psychology at WBHS, urged the crowd on to free everything” and Mike Salluce and Brian Hamilton agreed that if it” was free, they’d take it. Even though Herbie had predicted sunshine, the second morning found everyone in as much of a fog as Tom Warren and Patti Dunlop. John Richinick passed the wet hours, telling his complete repetoire of Polish jokes; causing Paula Carlson to cover her face saying Oh, is that gross!” Luckily, the group appearing that morning was a Sha-na-na revival, featuring Don Bianchini, Brian Kisiel, John McKeon, Dave Smiley, and Gary Knox. The rain only helped them keep their hair sleeked down and even shrunk their T-shirts and chinos. By this time Teddi Cavan had called the cops from across the street complaining about the loud music, but Greg Jeff Starr” Barsamian announced that the festival would continue despite the storm, tothe applause of rock enthusiasts Donna Clemente, Pam Mig- neault, and Abigail Williams who had just flown in from Colorado especially for the festival. Between songs, Mary Dibara modeled clothes from Joann Hall’s house of fashions and Barry Howe darted across the stage in his famed yellow jacket. Arkansas lassie stars, Judy Ohristo and Sue Bancroft gave out autographs while Valerie Cook sported a bronze medallion in the Olympic walking event. Mean- while Matt ’the hat’ DeWaele compared headgear with Jim Beshai: the contest judged by Lori Carraciolo. The showers became a torrential rainstorm, catching everyone by surprise except Ann Cavan, who had been expecting a flood for quite a few years. John Pustis gave swimming lessons at SOC a head, and Elaine Nedder sold a dry pair of shoes to anyone who needed them. Steve McGrain borrowed ten thou- sand bags of groceries from his chain of Fortin stores, valuing approximately one million dollars accord- ing to cashier Marcy French for the hungry crowd. John Reynolds recorded all the happenings on film and was assisted by Lucille Naughton. Meanwhile Nadine Prankunas busied herself by designing the cover for the album to be released by the Ding Dong Record Co., managed by Bill Esteves. In the rudder of the performance, Doug Nickerson mistakenly closed the curtains, causing the throng to erupt into a riot, which was quelled by state troopers Steve Veshi and A1 Borjeson, aided by the efficient head busting of Hell’s Angels, lead by Kevin Roche and Steve Myers. The injured were removed on stretchers, carried by Dick Catalani and Steve Potvin, to the first aid station, where nurse Barbara Newell adminstered prescriptions from Frat’s choice of Lincoln drugstores. Denise Bossi threw in a little physical therapy while Pam Bonci typed out reports. Vet Karen Oman was busy putting the rest of the animals” in their cages when Deb Beauregard, Diane Cerce, Lee Bennet and Karen Kokernak arrived for treatment for their bruises and blisters suffered in learning to dance from the world renowned choreogra- pher Sue Gibree. Also on hand were Nancy Bohlin and Donna Oppici, who never quite felt at home outside of a nurse’s office, and pro skier Bob Ham, whose injuries had been aggrevated by the wet weather. If the rain were not bad enough, the night’s temperature sank to a frigid 30 degrees. Although janitors Phil Moran and Bruce Bancroft swept the snow from the stage and Bob Spiro, Jim Arsenault, and Bob Happy got in some extra hockey practice, the freezing cold caused the crowd to evacuate at the rate of 3.5x 2 n r people per hour, according to Ann Testarmata. Pauline Desroches scraped the icicles from her 10 speed and skidded down the road leaving famed majorette Cindy Fancy without an audience. In another corner of the park, Mike Lynch was frozen like an ice cube and just couldn’t thaw out. The festival, acclaimed as the greatest by everyone, (except Gary Bebout, who found only semi-success- ful) was over. Patti Orne cracked up her car, causing a huge traffic jam on Crescent St. Mounted police- woman Deb Nowak galloped to the rescue and dissolved the jam, allowing Judy Connor to putter away in the little red bug. The sun dawned the next day on the deserted park, except for Mike O’Neil, who dutifully mowed the lawn and Don Lamberto, who rummaged through the remains in search of valuables. . . . Maybe it is the time of year, Or maybe it’s the time of man I don’t know who I am But life is for learning . . . Joni Mitchell 143 jg The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew, The furrow followed free; We were the first that ever burst Into that silent sea. a f
