AVE HEAD START THEIR FUTURE Our junior year was a year of great excitement and activity. To serve in the dual role of president and prom king we elected Pat Kenny, while to fill the other execu- tive positions we chose Vice-president Carl Schmidt and Secretary-treasurer Mary jo Thompson. To the position of senate secretary-treasurer, Barb Fuge was elected. Homecoming, as usual, was a big event, with Shelby Schenk representing us on the court of honor. Mr. Panfilis homeroom took a first place in the window competition, while Miss Podruch's produced a third place float. Again, from our class, came stars of both stage and gridiron. In the spring of the year, nine mem- bers of our class were honored by election to the National Honor Society. But by far the crowning glory of our junior year was, of course, the prom. Working into the wee hours of the morning to complete prepara- tions, we took great pride in leading King Pat, with his queen, Charlotte F rankow, and their court into a setting of magnificent oriental splendor. But, as the last strains of Sayonarav drifted away, we realized that the end of our wonderful junior year, too, was close at hand. Now, as seniors, we had reached the true climax of our high school years. Still wondering where these years had gone, we resolutely set out to live to the fullest our final months at WBHS. To fill the offices of our class of '59, we elected Carl Schmidt, president, john Lay, vice-president, Sue Weinert, secretary, and Mary jo Thompson, treasurer. janet Runge, AFS sum- mer student just returned from Finland, was also elected secretary-treasurer of the student senate. Our representative on the 1958 Homecoming court was Merrie Heil, and, for the second consecutive year, Mr. Panfilis homeroom won the window competition. Mary jo Thompson, our treasurer, received the distinction of becoming the first candidate in the history of WBHS for the Little Ten Wrestling Queen. Also, but in a more scholarly area, two seniors, Carl Schmidt and joan Race received high rankings in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Engaged in a veritable host of activities, we found that our days, as seniors, flew by faster than ever. Still, in everything we undertook, there was a certain sense of finality, a knowledge that our time at West Bend High would soon be brought to completion. With this in mind, then, we approached that day of days --- commencement. Valedictorian Carl Schmidt and salutatorian Mary Cehl solemnly led the class of '59 to receive their diplomas. The pattern is set, and our futures begin! Ioan Race and Carl Schmidt won top honors in the National Merit Scholarship test. Local DAR winner, Nancy Bales, goes over her work before class begins.
