First, we are aware of a sense of emptiness, realizing that our high school years are lost forever --- these years with their sorrows and joys, their tears and triumphs. But we also experience a new sense of fulfillment, secure in the knowledge that we have lived these years to the utmost and that what we have gained from them justifies this feeling of accomplishment. True, the hallways of West Bend High will soon be only a memory, but one which will be cher- ished as we go through life. Thoughts such as these were farthest from our minds as we entered our freshman year, eager to partake of all that high school had to offer. Enthusiastic, but a little bewildered, we set out to make a place for ourselves among the established, experienced upperclassmen. Nor was this an easy task, for we soon discovered that only honest effort, in and out of the class- room, would make us worthy members of the student body. As freshmen, we turned to the fair sex for leader- ship, electing as our class officers President Mary Jo Thompson, Vice-president Sally Laycock, and Secre- tary-treasurer Judy Maxon. Our agreennessv soon wore off, however, as we became active in debate, forensics, intramurals, and athletics. One of the highlights of our freshman year was homecoming, with freshman Bob Cooley finding the toothpick, and Carol Matenaer being our choice for the court. With the passing of another important event, the May Ball, our freshman year came to a close. Returning again to WBHS as sophomores, we be- gan our activities with new feelings of security and responsibility. Elected as our new class officers were Carl Schmidt, president, Mary Jo Thompson, vice- president, and Judy Schleif, secretary-treasurer. Social- ly, our sophomore year began with the election of Joan Cotter to the homecoming court. On the athletic field, our class of ,59 contributed several members to varsity teams. Also as sophomores, many members of our class distinguished themselves in dramatics, forensics, and music. One of the yearis greatest undertakings was our very successful post-prom party, entitled Mardi Crasf, As the short months of our sophomore year slipped by, we soon come to the midpoint of our high school career.
