SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Charles Cropper ---- President Rachel Finch - - - Secretary-Treasurer Richard A. Schmidt - - - Vice-President Sophs! We could hardly believe it! Why it seemed like only yesterday that we had entered West Bend High to further our education. Yet, one year ago we were excited, bustling, and frightened newcomers to the now familiar halls and classrooms. As we reminisce, so many happenings are re- called. What fun we had cheering at sports events and decorating for school dances. We smile as we think of all the joys we shared together and grin at the sorrows we suffered, which at the time, neverthe- less, were very serious and important. But all of us glow with the feeling of contentment and happiness, knowing that another successful term has been com- pleted. Soon after the school year began, class elections were held during which time rivalry and excitement mixed in a flurry of nomination blanks and whispered comments concerning the candidates. Finally, we chose Charles CChuckJ Cropper for president, Richard A. Schmidt, vice-president, and Rachel Finch, secretary-treasurer. Early in the term we were well represented by a fellow classmate, Fred Strey, who was elected to the office of vice-president of the Student Senate. Fred has done a fine job and has proved him- self to be a most capable leader With the fall season came chllly weather football and the annual homecoming festivities We were equally disgruntled when the brush of our second bonfire burned suspiciously to a heap of ashes but we Jumped for Joy when Sally Brown the sophomore candidate for the homecoming court was announced as queen. Page twenty-eight Sophomoros Bowed down with prolvlems ofgrowing up and enfoying life Everyone worked hard on the downtown window displays, and the class was well rewarded when Miss Balistreri's homeroom took first honors with Mr. Runkel's placing second. The B cheerleaders gave us added zest, and we showed our interest and true school spirit by becoming loyal fans at all sports events. While only a few of our athletes played A team football, base- ball, and basketball, others added spark in tennis, track, golf and cross country. Quite a number of us became acquainted with debate as the result of a debate-English class. Other forensics were popular, too, and talents were displayed in declamations, oratory, and extemp- oraneous subjects. Excellent speaking ability was shown when Sonia Bernhardt won the state award in extemporan- eous speaking and was given the chance to attend the NFL contest in Pennsylvania. But most of all, we recognized the need for study and tried our best to keep grades above level. Looking forward to a promising future, we will strive to continue our commendable work at WBHS. 1
