In the northwest corner is the pond. Tall elm and oak trees surrounding the banks cast cool shadows over the ground and water. The inviting shadows offer a pleasant spot to relax when the temperature rises. When winter comes, students skim lightly over the smooth coat of ice and fill the air with merriment. To the south are the athletic fields covering half of the campus. Surrounded by the quarter mile track, the football gridiron lies in the center. Here on Bruhy Field the varsity team practices and plays its games. The goal posts at the northern end of the playing field have been torn down many times in past years as the jubilant students celebrated a championship. The tennis courts, located about 100 yards north of the southeast corner of the campus, are used not only by the varsity tennis team but also by students during their noon hours and on weekends. Some persons believe that the most beautiful sight on the campus is the tree dotted front lawn. The front campus after a snowstorm Looking down, one sees the blue spruce which are the pride of the school. Perhaps the best season to view these trees is winter, for then they have put on cloaks of white, and their branches are weighed down with snow. A final glance to the northern part of the campus reveals a wide, sloping bank which stretches out towards the end. Upon this small hill, the students rest during warm weather. Noon hours and after school hours find the bank crowded with talking boys and girls. Here is the favorite spot for groups of students to discuss the happenings of the day. Here, too, many elm trees cover the landscape, casting cool shadows on the ground. As the various seasons pass, the campus takes on different dresses. Students enjoy their stay on this beautiful campus, and when the time for graduation arrives, there is a bit of sadness in everyone's heart. Though the students depart from the high school, they always carry with them a vision of reflections on the pond, the blue spruce at the front entrance, the football field on game night. Every experience has added something to campus memories. 4 Af' f .,,1 . afar - gf .A 'lu .z . .arf ,Q '.-9, ..' A fr 2- ' - Q Q - '- J-' . . 15,2 ,W . - . 61 ' As the beginning of the high school term drew near, the custodial staff gave the building a final inspec- tion. To their trained eyes the school was spotless. Throughout the entire building an air of cleanliness prevailed. The janitors had reason to be proud of the product of their summer labor. Everything was in tip- top shape for the 1953-54 enrollment. On the afternoon of August 19 the school lay dor- mant. All of the teachers who had worked during the summer had departed for vacations, only a skeleton crew manned the building. Then disaster broke into the open when the pun- gent odor of smoke was detected. Glenn Markgraf, one of the janitors, responded quickly to the danger and summoned the fire department. Dark, billowing masses of smoke rising above the school building transmitted the news to the townspeople more effectively than wire- less could have. At the heels of the fire department hundreds of curious persons arrived within minutes. The efficient West Bend Fire Department managed to subdue the flames after a long battle. Nevertheless, building damage was estimated at approximately S200,000. Once-clean walls were streaked with dirt, water streamed through the corridors, ceilings, swollen and bulging, rained torrents of water and the third floor was lacking a roof. In addition Hubert Becker, chief custodian, overcome by smoke, had been taken to the hospital, but not in a serious condition. Repairs were begun immediately, as the scheduled opening of school was only two weeks distant. Con- tractors came to the scene of the damage to make esti- mates on repairs and soon began renovating the buil- ding. A call was sent out to any students who wished to aid in clearing away the debris. Several dozen re- sponded to prepare for re-opening on September 8. Since many sections and rooms of the building were badly demolished classes had to be re-scheduled. The school administration spent many hours to accomp- lish the re-routing. Thanks to their hard work, the splendid co-operation of the students, and the rapid work of the contractors, school opened on schedule. Major repairs continued for several months after school convened. When the newly renovated sections were opened in December, the cramped and crowded conditions of previous months were forgotten. Once more walls were painted, and the gym floor was refin- ished. As a small reward for the inconvenience of the past months, new additions, such as an acoustical ceiling and skylights on the third floor, were installed. Debris cluttered the front entrance A third-floor classroom The roof was severely damaged Repairs are begun in a few days Page si ., L M, Q s,M,,g4 iw i -E W, ff g ? Saturdays the custodians are working to complete jobs which they were unable to do while the students were in school. The fine condi- tion of the building is a tribute to their efforts. It seems a long time since that day in 1950 when we started our high school career as green freshmen. The things we have learned and ex- perienced throughout our four-year journey will live on as cherished memories of the past. From the very first day, we as a class started to develop a firm foot-hold in the activities of the school. We began by electing Dianne Mechenich. Dennis Kral, and Janet Schultz as officers of the class. Right from the begin- ning, we began developing outstanding athletes and were also winning debate and forensic honors. We entered our sophomore year in high spirits, for we were green freshies no longer. We meant to prove our worth in all possible ways. The first thing we did was to elect Bob Lauson. Jerry Matenaer, and Barbara Frankow class officers. Our sophomore class was represented in practically every extra-curricular activity which was off- ered in West Bend High. The junior year is probably the best and most import- ant year of any. At least so it seemed for the class of '54. It was a year of triumphs and successes which will be long remembered. Our first triumph in this year was electing Bob Lauson as president of the Student Senate. We chose for our class officers Bob Schneider, Dennis Gagan, and Ruth Bunke. All those who purchased and received class rings were very proud of them. After this event came homecom- ing with our candidate, Linda Taagen being elected home- coming queen. The spring of our junior year was very exciting, for this was prom time. We chose for our theme 'tMoonlight and Roses. Bob Schneider, our king, selected for his queen. Jeanne Collien. The wonderful music, provided by Larry Ladd, amid the beautiful decorations and the prom royalty, was an event which will be remembered by all who attended the lavish social affair. Now we are seniors, fast approaching the end of our four-year journey. For officers we elected Peter Hosp, Bob Hensler, and Lucille Miller. Barbara Frankow and Dennis Gagan were elected to the senate positions of secretary-treasurer and president, respectively. In all the flurry and excitement of the homecoming parade, bonfires, and homecoming dance. we forgot that this happiness would end with graduation. As Bette Weber took her place on the homecoming court. we suddenly realized this was our last year of high school. With graduation plans came the announcement that Rita Gundrum and Joanne Gutjahr were co-valedictorians of the class. As June 3 neared. we thought back and truthfully could say that we had a successful high school career. While some of us will continue our education. others will start working, a few will join the armed services. but what- ever we do. we will always remember and cherish our experiences as students at the West Bend High School. We were upper-classmen. Our first major class activity was that of electing Ralph Klumb as class president and prom king, Don Schreiner as vice-president, and Pat Klein as secre- tary-treasurer of the class. The juniors pitched in to make the traditional homecoming activities a grand success. One could always find juniors present when a group met to work on the bonfire or when a committee was ap- pointed to arrange for the little things that no one would ever get credit for. When the awards for the winning floats were announced, Mr. Bertram's home- room was overjoyed with their third win in a row. Our '53-'54 homecoming faded into a happy memory as Kaye Frankow took her place in the court of honor at the dance following the game. With much pride and pleasure, we chose our class rings and displayed them to the less fortunate under-classmen. The junior class was blessed with many talented persons. Mary Keeley and Nancie Matenaer had parts in the all-school play Hangman's Noose. Harry Kissinger once more had the male lead in the operetta, The Fortune Teller. Many more of the talented junior boys and girls participated in this activity. On the intellectual side of our extra-curricular program we had Gordon Griese- mer who took his place on the A debate squad. Carmen Kerry and Gordon Griesemer also went to the state forensic contest at Madison on Sat- urday, April 10. Page twenty-four Uniors The worle is lzarcler, lout tlze air smells sweeter During the entire year the jaunty juniors con- tributed much to the athletic activities of WBHS by way of participation and by enthusiasm. Prominent junior figures on the athletic field included: Don Schreiner, Don De Tuncq, Al Peters, and Bill Clay- baugh. Many juniors also entered the intramural con- tests and were victors in many events. Our classmen displayed good sportsmanship and school loyalty in every task undertaken. The student body was led in its cheers by four junior cheerleaders: Barbara Sonnenberg, Betty Troedel, Eileen Staral, and Sue Griepentrog. Toward the end of the year all of our efforts were turned to making the prom a splendid social affair. The theme of the 1954 prom was Loveliest Night of the Year. At a special pep meeting called after school everyone was excited when King Ralph Klumb announced Virginia Hoy the '54 prom queen. When we receive the '54 Bend, our junior year will be considered ended, but we will look with even more expectancy to the last lap of our education on the road of success. 1 Donna Stemer Gerald Seldeman Barb Llesse Joanne Betty Troedel 63 4? fi -'uni '37'F'f ww r Flrst Row Shlrley Abel Don g1n1a Agenten Betty Arndt Lynn A Barth Allen Boeker Q55 ttf fo- -av 11 353, X Fu Tx 7 '?i '3 4-Z X Flrst Ron Janlce Boettcher Rxchard Bor chardt Doreen Boyung Herbert Breuer Daud Brodzellex Verna Broecker Ruth Brugger Wancx Buettner Donna Butler Achterber hrs UBI' nl I Class -1' WF' 2 Wi I at 4 H yn .af 'QI fx g Tom Ackerman Vlr Second Row Roger Bauman Rlchard B Ben Barr Bernard Cecllla Bles Jeannette Blntz Pat Boden Mary Bath gf: 2? Schmidt - - - Vice-President Sophs! We could hardly believe it! Why it seemed like only yesterday that we had entered West Bend High to further our education. Yet, one year ago we were excited, bustling, and frightened newcomers to the now familiar halls and classrooms. As we reminisce, so many happenings are re- called. What fun we had cheering at sports events and decorating for school dances. We smile as we think of all the joys we shared together and grin at the sorrows we suffered, which at the time, neverthe- less, were very serious and important. But all of us glow with the feeling of contentment and happiness, knowing that another successful term has been com- pleted. Soon after the school year began, class elections were held during which time rivalry and excitement mixed in a flurry of nomination blanks and whispered comments concerning the candidates. Finally, we chose Charles CChuckJ Cropper for president, Richard A. Schmidt, vice-president, and Rachel Finch, secretary-treasurer. Early in the term we were well represented by a fellow classmate, Fred Strey, who was elected to the office of vice-president of the Student Senate. Fred has done a fine job and has proved him- self to be a most capable leader With the fall season came chllly weather football and the annual homecoming festivities We were equally disgruntled when the brush of our second bonfire burned suspiciously to a heap of ashes but we Jumped for Joy when Sally Brown the sophomore candidate for the homecoming court was announced as queen. Page twenty-eight Sophomoros Bowed down with prolvlems ofgrowing up and enfoying life Everyone worked hard on the downtown window displays, and the class was well rewarded when Miss Balistreri's homeroom took first honors with Mr. Runkel's placing second. The B cheerleaders gave us added zest, and we showed our interest and true school spirit by becoming loyal fans at all sports events. While only a few of our athletes played A team football, base- ball, and basketball, others added spark in tennis, track, golf and cross country. Quite a number of us became acquainted with debate as the result of a debate-English class. Other forensics were popular, too, and talents were displayed in declamations, oratory, and extemp- oraneous subjects. Excellent speaking ability was shown when Sonia Bernhardt won the state award in extemporan- eous speaking and was given the chance to attend the NFL contest in Pennsylvania. But most of all, we recognized the need for study and tried our best to keep grades above level. Looking forward to a promising future, we will strive to continue our commendable work at WBHS. 1 6 0- x 0 , J 'Kr as- C :ovu- 95 -uv' fr-i '5j ll at 44 , erleaders Elame Allardmg Jerome Luy Back Row Conme Bev Bever and cotton plant Justman Carolyn Baer -38 Decoratlons for the post prom party at school Marg Garcla Front Row Lmda Draper Ruth MeCh6HlCh Q ph Class 1' 'fr' ,.. lf, aa-If 'Q ...V v bf If, ,- sg gf' Alf' .ya 7 ...Ay First Row Fred Achterberg Elaine Allardmg James Anderson Carol Behrends Shlrley Asmus Carolme Baer Leroy Baertlem Gordon Bast Barbara Bauer Sandra Bauer vo J an fl -O fv- ,fp Jv -L 1 07 ,sv 3 g .241- 7-Zn' Fi I Second Row Martha Baumer Gordon Becker Margo Becker Marcla Arndt Dorothy Bellm Howard Belllng Soma Bernhardt Dlck Beth Beverly Bever Ruth Blanke inf! asv 'W '9' any l ffl f 4 fy 400 F: 3' pdf va 4,-0.9 -9 gaz- J 1' WK' 'ld' -1 -1 -T writ A I-'lrst Row Bernadme Blazel David Blazel Second Rovs Marlpat Burg John Ca1n Bottom Row Eugene Drncken Joan Dyken Marhs Boeldt Betty Boesen Robert Melmda Carter Erlene Cooper Collette Mary Eklo David Engelexter Donald En Boldt Ronald Bolm J1m Bomerman Cotter Colleen Cotton Charles Crapper senbach Wlllxam Erhardt Darleen Faber Bemnce Brmkman Sall Brown Beverl D tl y y an cross John Dedrxck Lmda Draper Carol Fehlhaber Rachel Fmch Bob Fas Brunner ter Page twenty mne i i Che ' : ' ' , , ' ix' h S re f ' v -fe ff, - ,. a. fy S C, . At last we were in high school! What a marvelous sensation! Our first days will always be filled with fond mem- ories. At first, everything was strangely new. Would we ever find the rooms for our classes or call the teachers by their right names? As the time passed, the weeks that followed were heavily scheduled with activities and school work. Everything was still rather new to us, but we soon developed into real freshmen students. Our first homecoming was truly an exciting event in our lives. How excited we became as we worked on our first homecoming float and window. Some great talents and imaginations were displayed the night of the parade. Prizes were awarded to the best window and float decorations. Although none of our floats received first honor, we freshmen will have new and better ideas for competition next year. What a thrill we had as Reed Zimdars lit the huge bonfire and crowned the queen. Even more exciting was the game the next night, and with a victory-we were just too joyous for words. The class of '57 was represented on the homecoming court by Laurie Tollack. Our first big election was that for choosing class officers. After a very exciting race, Fred Schultz was elected president, Pat Frankow, vice-president and Jackie Schultz, secretary- treasurer. On September 12, we held our class party. With the helpful suggestions of our freshmen advisers, it proved to be a tremendous success. Games were played, and prizes awarded to the Page thirty-two reshmen Lost for a while --- Zvuf when flzey founcl flzemselvesf winners of the contests. Dancing and refreshments followed. The Student Senate was well represented by our class, and our senators displayed much enthusiasm in working on senate committees. One of our teammates, Ron Steiner, received a WB letter in cross country, adding much honor to our class. The B football team upheld its previous championship record with the rugged assistance of Herbie Tennies, Paul Gumm, Bob Holzhueter, and Bob Giombetti. Many freshmen also contributed to the success of the B basketball team, while our freshmen team, coached by Mr. Garrett, gained much experi- ence for the future. Many freshmen also participated in debate and entered the forensic program. Dramatics and intra- murals also engaged many of our classmates during the year. We can look back with pride on our freshman days and consider them the happiest days of our lives. We are, however, looking forward to three more years of enjoyable experiences at West Bend High School. 1 I men to homeroo Mr Grlgnon Freshmen girls Relaxlng takes hrs fresh demonstrating baking during the m noon lunch hour lQShl11ill1 Class .53 'nw' F-5 iw, 81 1571: 'LU 4. Last year, for the first time, a service award for two faculty members was present- ed by Mr. Holt. The recipients of the award were Miss Heidner and Mr. Runkel. The Bausch and Lomb Award, for her fine achievements in science work, was presented to Carol Gonring by Mr. Kuss. Carol Gonring and Lucille Wardius won the Ziegler Foundation Scholarship Award. The award enables the students to receive S300 toward a college education and may be continued for a period of four years. Kristine Hoy and Mary Lou Millard were the alternates for the award. The Arion Award, presented for musical achieve- ment, was given to Martin Laufer for his meritorious performance displayed in the band during his four years in high school. Page thirty-eight Mr. Robert Pick presented his award to the honor senior boy and girl athlete in school, Phyllis Jones and Dan Duernberger. Kristine Hoy and Dennis Kral were presented the S100 D. J. Kenney - B. C. Ziegler Debate Award. for the greatest amount of progress gained during the year in debate. The award is open to students from every class. The American Legion Award was presented to Dan Smith and Lucille Wardius. It is given to the students with the qualities of courage, service. char- acter. leadership and scholarship. Cynthia Kuechler was given the Kiwanis Award for her interest and initiative in achieving a high school education in spite of a handicap. The senior girl possessing the qualities of de- pendability, service, leadership and patriotism is presented the D. A. R. Award. Carol Gonring was named the D. A. R. girl. oonli ht and Doses As this year's junior class begins preparations for its prom. we as seniors recall our own prom and all the fun planning for it. The prom was held on May 22. 1953, with lovely decorations to carry out the theme of Moonlight and Roses. Everyone waited with eager anticipation as to who would be queen. However. her identity was not revealed until the pre-prom dance when King Bob Schneider announced Jeanne Collien as his queen. The queen's attendants and their escorts were Bar- bara Laycock and Gordon Rose, Bette Weber and Roger Johnson, Faith Gauger and Dennis Gagan. Ruth Bunke and Warren Ciriacks, Corinne Smith and Ross Schleif, Marlene Nicolaus and John Haebig. The gym was decorated so that the couples were dancing in a garden of roses. Light green streamers completed the ceiling decorations and dark green, rose trimmed trellises covered the walls. In one cor- ner of the gym, there was a wishing well. A trellis covered with roses was built over the center of the gym, which opened wide at 11:00 to reveal the King and Queen and their royal court. King Bob Schneider and Queen Jeanne Collien were crowned by last year's king and queen, Jim Lang and Mary Ackerman. After the grand march, everyone continued dancing to the music of Larry Ladd and his orchestra. All juniors who worked on the various commit- tees can be justly proud of their efforts because the prom was a social affair always to be remembered. At the close of the dance program, students gath- ered at the high school gym to attend a post-prom party. There refreshments were served to the couples by the members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The parents who helped plan the party were Mrs. Harold Schatz, Mrs. Walter Ziegler, Mrs. Hattie Smithers, Mrs. Anthony Kerry. Mrs. Leslie Reynolds, Mrs. Lawrence Keeley, Mrs. Peter Boden, Mrs. Greg Matenaer, and Mrs. Harvey Gibson. Miss Prahl, general chairman for the affair. and her committees worked many hours for the success of the post-prom-party and were rewarded for their time and effort by the tremendous turn-out of stu- dents and favorable comments which followed the party. When the party was completed, students left for home, but all retained fond memories of the loveliest night in the year. Al Buettner greets guests at post-prom party Q . . A recorci for the future Formation of the 1954 Bend staff first began at the end of the previous school year when the class members applied for the various positions. When the editorial staff had been chosen, the initial work began. Mr. Baxter, the Bend adviser, had to take three inexperienced students, Brian Beck, Ruth Bunke, and Bar- bara Frankow and teach them the basic essentials necessary Page forty to edit a yearbook. Mr. Baxter also had to supervise and instruct the advertising man- ager, Dennis Kral, and the business manager, Robert Buchelt to start them off properly with their important jobs. Schedules for pictures had to be ar- ranged to make sure the camera men Curtis Schmidt, Ronald Schnepf, Leroy Kreutzer, and Jerry Marsden obtained an accurate, pic- torial record of all school functions. However, photographs are not enough to complete a yearbook, therefore, the art staff including adviser Miss Roselyn Zukoski, Ken Schmidt and Richard Herbst spent their cre- ative hours sketching the element in a year- book that gives it life. Thousands of words and hun- dreds of lines of copy had to be Written and rewritten by many of the industrious senior stu- dents. Then this material had to be typed and proof-read. Joanne Gutjahr and Shirley Tock re- ceived most of the trying assign- ments. When all the work is finished and the financial report has been given to the school administra- tion, the final step is the mailing of a copy to the National Scholas- tic Press Association Critical Service in hopes of a topnotch rating for their efforts. I rise fo a point of order The Student Senate, the voice of the students in school affairs, began its busy schedule of work soon after registration day. Since many important projects such as the election of the senate officers, president and secretary-treasurer were held in the spring of the 1953 year, the senate progressed steadily. Dennis Gagan and Barbara Frankow were successful in their campaigns to obtain the office of president and secre- tary-treasurer, respectively. In an election held in October, Fred Strey, the sophomore candidate, over-powered the freshman nominees and was elected vice-president. One of Fred's many duties was to hide the tooth-pick in the homecoming festivity. Throughout the school term, the senate formu- lated legislation to better the future years at West Bend High. One notable change that broke a tradition was that the homecoming queen should be chosen only from members of the senior class. On October 12, Kaye Frankow, Don De Tuncq, and Dennis Gagan were selected to attend the Little Ten Student Council Meetings. It is interesting to note that Dennis Gagan represented the school as vice-president of the Little Ten Council. To raise funds, a new senate project was selected to replace the Senate Variety show of previous years. A box social and dance was held on February 20 at the McLane gym, with Mr. Weier acting as master of ceremonies of the affair, The entertainment pro- gram included a piano duet by Kaye and Barbara Frankow, a cornet selection by Tom Oelhafen, songs by the Quarternotes g a pantomime by Barbara Son- nenberg, and the well-known hula dance was done by the Can Can Girls. Mrs. Kuckuk completed the program by graciously playing piano requests. Danc- ing to the rhythmic music of the Top Hatters' Orches- tra followed the supper. In the course of the year not only senior and upperclass senators, but all the senators served to make the year a successful one. With the careful planning of the president and with the aid of Mr. Schultz, the senate progressed steadily throughout the year giving the students a voice in school affairs. Ripon College was again the scene of the 1953 session of Badger Boys State The following boys from West Bend attended John Moeller Paul Col lins Peter Hosp Jim Gonring and Dennis Gagan The Boys State project is sponsored by the American Legion but each boy IS sponsored by a local organization in his home town. The purpose of Boys State as defined in the citizens manual is to educate our youth in the duties privileges rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. During their stay at Boys State the boys elect officials to make and enforce the laws of Boys State. For eight days a select group of 650 boys from all walks of life, from all parts of Wisconsin, made up of all nationalities, races and creeds establish their own government and run it according to the prin- ciples of American democracy and with limited sup- ervision. Every day while attending Boys' State, each member must go to a special school for instruction in some form of government. However, Boys' State is not all work and no play. Every afternoon from 2:30 to 5:00, a fine recreation program is set up. Included in the program are softball, touch football, basketball, track, and a singles and doubles tennis tournament. All this activity creates a healthy appe- tite, and this too is satisfied. All the food one can eat is available. The location of the con- vention in the capital city suited the purpose of the session namely to educate the members in city county and state governments. The 280 junior girls representing high schools throughout the state of Wisconsin received not only an excellent education in government procedure but also found through a fine recreational program, an opportunity to meet new friends. Linda Taagen and Barbara Frankow represented the West Bend High School at the session. During their stay in the capital city, the Badger State girls established a make-believe 49th state, holding the same elections as an established state. Party caucuses, election of officers, and lecture ses- sions gave much practical experience in government procedures. A guided tour through the Capitol cli- maxed the session of Badger Girls' State. As a result of this fine program, which is spon- sored by the American Legion Auxiliary, many girls gain an interest in political careers and governmental operation. ho ati nal Honor Socioly A goal worflz worlefng for Character. service, scholarship, and leadership are the qualities that every National Honor Society member must have attained. Students must be juniors or seniors, have been enrolled at West Bend High School for at least one semester, and have maintained at least a B average. The original members of the National Honor Society of last year were Ruth Bunke, Barbara Frankow, John Moeller, Dennis Kral, Brian Beck, Peter Hosp, Jim Gonring and Paul Collins. Officers elected for the first semester were: Jim Gonring, president, Ruth Bunke, treasurer, Barbara Fran- kow, secretary, and Dennis Kral, vice-president. New members are elected twice a year, once during the first semester and once during the second. With the addition of seventeen new members during the first semester and eleven during the second, membership was increased to thirty-six. Those elected to the National Honor Society during the first semester were Roger Johnson, Marilyn Hetzel, Gloria Jonas, Joanne Gutjahr, Rita Gundrum, Barbara Laycock Tom Baer, Dennis Gagan, Carmen Kerry, Carla Stauske, Judy Herman, Barbara Potter. Tom Ackerman, Ralph Klumb, Bill Claybaugh, and Gordon Griesemer. Second semester officers were Paul Collins, president, Dennis Gagan, vice-president, Barbara Frankow, secretary, and Carmen Kerry, treasurer. Members elected during the second semester were Nancy Hoelz. Stanley Hall, Ray Brink- man, Shirley Tock, Bob Lauson, Arlene Techtman, Virginia Hoy, Alfred Goshaw, Jeanne Koester, Carolyn Neitzel, and Noraleen Wendelborn. When it seemed that West Bend would be without its annual mid-winter formal it was the Honor Society that took over. The first Snow Ball under the sponsorship of the Na- tional Honor Society proved to be a highly successful under- taking and will become an annual event under its sponsor- ship as a formal party, 1 Ti i ii f lrarudur Lcadvrsirlp hcfmlurslnp burn-we Top Row John Moeller, Ralph Klumb. During the season the four member WA team achieved a record of seven first places in the twelve tournaments in which it participated. Debating the question, Resolved: That the President of the United States should be elected Page fox ty-si Speech Logical Tlzinleing . by a direct vote of the people, were Gordon Griesemer and Dennis Kral maintaining the affirmative, and Sonia Bern- hardt and Brian Beck upholding the negative. The team began the season by placing first in the annual West Bend Invitational Tournament on November 14. As the season advanced different persons were tried on the varsity. Finally, in the middle of January. the squad of Griesemer, Kral, Bernhardt, and Beck was selected to repre- sent West Bend in the Championship tournaments. Beginning with a first place in the Little Ten meet, Mr. Bertram's team began its winning streak. A first place in the district meet and another first place in the sectional elimina- tion allowed the team to compete in the state meet. There they won fourth place. Much credit for the success of the debate team goes to Mr. Bertram. the coach. He spent many hours with his debat- ers, instructing them in the basic principles of debate. In addition to his after school work, he inaugurated a debate class into the high school program. Through this class a great many students were brought in contact with speech work. The 1954 team consisted of 36 members on all squads. This was the largest group of students ever to compete in debat- ing. The team had both quality and quantity. Since many of the debaters will return next season, the future looks bright. UB DEBATE TEAM -.x Top Row Dick Beth Richard A. When school opened in early September, marching was the most important activity. Besides marching at all home football games and in parades, the band also performed on the Horicon High School field. All the band members were guests of the Laycocks at a wiener roast held at their resort on Big Cedar Lake. This, along with a skating party at Laufer's highlighted the social activities of the band. Other activities and performances of the band are too num- erous to mention, but a few of the more important were hearing the Chicago Symphony brass quintet which played for a school assembly and later held an instrumental clinic, the annual Thanks- giving concert, the spring concert, an exchange concert with Solomon Juneau High School of Milwaukee, a concert at Oshkosh State Teachers College, and the Eighth Annual Music Festival, a combined concert of the band and the chorus. The band has been very fortunate to have played under the direction of two of the country's foremost conductors. Professor Glenn Bainum, former band director at Northwestern University, held a clinic for the band in the fall and was guest conductor at the spring concert. Professor Thomas Richardson from the Uni- versity of Illinois was guest conductor at the eighth annual music festival on May 4. The swing band was again a busy organization, playing for school plays and dances while the pep band kept things going at school pep meetings and basketball games. Solo and ensemble playing, an important part of the band program, leads to the fulfillment of the band's motto, HEvery member a soloist. Soloists and members of ensembles appear regularly on fraternal, religious, and civic programs. This year the band sponsored a weekly radio program, Music Education on Parade, at which students performed. One interesting project of the band is to have each member write an original solo. Then a composition recital is held, and each member plays his solo. The band council which governs and regulates the activities, consists of one boy and one girl elected from each class, with the senior boy as president and the senior girl as secretary. The members of the council this year were Paul Collins, president, Diane Mechenich, secretary, Kaye Frankow, Bob Hack- barth, Sandra Bauer, Bob Habersetzer, Wilbert Zautner, and Susan Strodthoff. The officers of the band were Peter Hosp, general secretary, Bob Hackbarth, manager, Jeanne Koester, lib- rarian, Arnold Dyck, custodian, Joanne Hammes, treasurer, Jeanne Bassett, point secretary, Ann Polenske, recorder, and Jim Walsh, quartermaster. Band Director Mr. H. M. Shlimovitz has been the one respon- sible for the commendable record the West Bend band has com- piled in the last eight years. x , jf, , ' y. The club members also learned how to operate the 16 millimeter camera used for taking pictures of athletic events. In the future this club will be a defin- ite asset to West Bend High School. LATIN CLUB With Miss Hegbar, as adviser, the Latin Club was again one of the most active clubs at WBHS. This year the Latin Club, besides printing and selling football and basketball programs, donated a lens to the school movie camera. The club progressed under the leadership of John Moeller, president, Charles Geiger, vice-presidentg and Eileen Staral, secretary- treasurer. Activities were topped off on May 6 with a Roman banquet attended by 107 guests. CHESS CLUB The forty students of this club proved the art of playing chess is still very popular. All members were interested in acquiring or advancing their skill. Elementary moves and the names of the various chess pieces had to be memorized and executed. After pre- liminary instruction, Mr. Janto, the club adviser, decided the members were prepared for an inter-club competitory contest. Mastery of the intricate plays, learned by actual experience in the contest, made all members true winners. RED CROSS CLUB During the 1954 school session many projects were completed by the Junior Red Cross Club, The club consisted of 21 girls with representatives from all four classes. The various projects included the making of nut cups and hospital tray mats for the various holidays, baking an assortment of cookies for the local county homeg serving at the blood donors bank and later reporting over the local radio station about the services rendered. The club will continue throughout the summer and will send two former representatives to a National Convention at Lake Forest, Illinois. Preparations for the 1955 club are well underway. Mr. Hildebrand instructs the mem- bers of the projectionist's club. Miss Hegbar greets the Latin Club initiates. Chess Club members, Dick Perrin and Bob Reimann, in action. The Red Cross Club makes nut cups to be used during the Christmas holidays. Although the team only had five lettermen returning, Ilo Rauscher, Gordon Rose, Jim Jones, Don Schreiner and Francis Hupfer, these outstanding coaches built another fine team. Line coach Runkel developed a tough and rugged forward wall in the true traditions of West Bend High. Beginning their toil under the hot August sun, linemen Jim Jones, Francis Hupfer, Bob Lauson, Jim Wolf, Don Schreiner, Ralph Klumb, John Moeller and Jim Nohr played the greater portion of the games. It is a time when everyone shares in the fun and work to make the event a successful and happy occasion for all concerned. Towards the end of October, the students began working on plans for windows, floats, the bonfire, and all other activi- ties associated with homecoming. The burning of the bonfire twice by pranksters, before the original date, caused quite a turmoil among the students and citizens of West Bend. But. with the extra work of students and the cooperation of the townspeople, the bonfire was rebuilt both times, bigger and better than before. The annual tooth-pick hunt was held on Bruhy Field Thursday morning. The tooth-pick was finally found by freshman Reed Zimdars, who then had the honor of lighting the bonfire and crowning the queen. The night before the game the parade of floats was held and was quite successful despite the fact that one of the floats caught on fire. For having the best float, Mr. Bertram's homeroom won first place for the third consecutive year. Second and third places were won by Mr. Colby's and Miss Koepsel's homeroom, respectively. First, second, and third places in the window contest were awarded to the home- rooms of Miss Balistreri, Mr. Runkel, and Mr. Carstens. After the parade, everyone met on Bruhy Field to watch the third but legal bonfire and to join in the pep-meeting and snake dance. For the first time in West Bendls history. the pep-meeting and royalty announcements were held at the bonfire. For the first time, also, the sophomore candidate. Sally Brown, was elected queen. The court consisting of rep- resentatives from the other three classes was composed of Bette Weber, senior, Kaye Frankow, junior, and Laurie Tollack, freshman. Coaches Caldwell and Runkel did a fine job on training the squad as was shown in the homecoming game on October 30. The boys were victorious over the mighty Cardinals by a score of 21-12. The team was sparked by 20 seniors, 9 of whom were regulars and three of whom were first line reserves. Following the exciting game, a dance was held at the McLane gym in which the highlight was the grand march led by Queen Sally Brown and King Dave Engeleiter. The court of honor. consisting of Bette Weber and Don Cuperyg Kaye Frankow and Tom Ackermang Laurie Tollack and Ames Seefeld followed next in the grand march to the music of Larry Ladd and his orchestra. Under the direction of two very able and interested faculty members, the intramural activities reached a degree of success never anticipated when the initial schedules were estab- lished at West Bend High. The intramural system is set up so that every student in West Bend High School is a member of one of ten teams named after the Big Ten universities. Students and teams receive points in games and matches recorded, and at the end of each school year awards are given to the teams and players who have earned the highest num- ber of points. The team award during the 1952-53 season was given to the Buckeyes, directed by Dick Ruppin. The basic idea behind the intramural program is to promote student participation in team and individual athletic events. In the fall of 1953, a horse-shoe tourna- ment was held in which Carl Sponholz was finally declared the winner. Next came a free throw tournament in which Barbara Zarling and Dennis Gagan captured the champ- ionships. As the winter season approached, the intramural team events began. Dartball was played in both noon hours, and both boys' and girls' volleyball and basketball were played after school. The intramural system attained its highest peak of success when 230 students signed up for and participated in the table tennis tournament held during the two noon hours. As the intramural competition neared the final rounds, there was a close battle between the Badgers, Wolverines, Buckeyes, and Wildcats for the team point championship. The Wolverines emerged as victors. The intramural program is governed by the Intra- mural Board whose members are Mr. Kuss and Mr. Panfil, the faculty advisers, John Moeller, the student director, Mary Heipp, the assistant student director, Paul Collins, the publicity director, and the team captains, Roger John- son, Gophers, Tom Ackerman, Wolverines, Jim Jones, Hawkeyes, Ed Zautcke, Wildcats, Peter Hosp, Buckeyes, Carl Sponholz, Spartans, Mary Ann Goeden, Hoosiers, Dennis Kral, Boilermakers, Bill Claybaugh, Illini, and John Moeller, the Badgers. Also prominent in the success of the intramural program were the faculty sponsors, Miss Forster, Hoosiers, Miss Gerhartz, Hawkeyes, Mr. Carstens, Gophers, Mr. Caldwell, Wildcats, Mr. Janto, Badgers, Mr. Kuss, Wolverines, Mr. Grignon, Illini, Mr. Weiner, Buck- eyes, Mr. Strohacker, Spartans, and Mr. Weier, Boiler- makers. To close the season the team traveled to Fond du Lac to compete in a sectional meet. Due to the fact that they had grown in size during the year, the squad was reclassified from class B to class A competition. West Bend did not allow the larger schools to fright- en them, however, but picked up a third place and sent three individuals and a relay team to the state meet held at Madison. When Coach Carl Kuss began his initial workouts in the gym, it was evident that the team would represent West Bend High School in the fine tradition established by the baseball teams of previous years. The pitching staff was headed by Jim Weiss and Ken Frank with Ilo Rauscher and Carlos Meilinger assisting them. The catching duties were handled by Bob Hensler and Don Schreiner. The highly regarded infield had Bob Kissinger at first, Ken Frank at second, Roger Pee Wee Johnson at short, and Lloyd Dean at third. The outfield was patrolled by Bob Bart and John Moeller in left, Ilo Rauscher and Charlie Wiskerchen in center, and Gordie Rose in right. Defensively this was an outstanding team, but at the bat it was extra strong. Not many high school teams in the state could boast of a more powerful array of hitters, headed by Bob Kissinger and Ilo Rauscher who frequently belted the ball over the fence. In non-conference play, the hustling Badgers posted wins over Kewaskum, Shorewood and Port Washington. In their initial start in conference play, West Bend lost a closely contested battle to Hartford played on a substitute diamond at Rubicon. But the fighting Badgers were not to be discouraged by the heart-break- ing setback and went on from there to post decisive conference victories over Mayville, Horicon, and Oconomowoc. When the smoke had cleared, and the battling had stopped in the Little Ten Conference play, Mayville and West Bend were tied for the championship. In order to determine a single champion, a play-off game was scheduled on the neutral Horicon field. This game more than anything else exemplified the fighting spirit of the team. Behind 8 to 1 after three innings of play, the fighting Bad- gers came back behind the pitching of Ken Frank and Ilo Rauscher's pinch-hit, grand-slam home run to defeat Mayville 11-8, and captured the Little Ten Conference Baseball Championship. In 1951 Coach Kuss' fight- ing Badgers won the Little Ten Championship, the District, Sectional and the State Championships, and in 1952 were victorious in the District and Sectional Contests. The team won the regional championship by posting victories over Mayville and Horicon. But in the district tournament, West Bend lost a close game to Port Washington. This 2 to 1 contest was marked by bad breaks for West Bend and a high wind which cost them the game.
