OFFICERS Sue Christensen - Secretary-treasurer Bill Claybaugh - - - President Rose Marx - Vice-president Freshman Day! For many of us this day was the first time we had seen the inside of West Bend High School. The mixed emotions with which we had long viewed this day soon disappeared as our only thought centered on finding our way through the maze of rooms and corridors. One or two of us were lost for awhile, but all returned home safely that night. After several weeks, the teachers began to recog- nize faces and names when they saw the freshmen. Our right to vote was first put to use in election of freshmen class officers. Our president was Bill Claybaugh, our vice-president was Rose Marx and our secretary-treasurer was Sue Christenson. It was an honor for our class to have Tom Ackerman elected as vice-president of the Student Senate. All of us had heard of school spirit, but its real meaning came to us at the pep meetings and the foot- ball games where we cheered right along with the upperclassmen, our enthusiasm making up for our lack of experience. In our opinion our first home- coming was a grand success. Babette Rohrman, a fellow freshman, found the toothpick and had the honor of crowning the queen and lighting the bonfire. The freshman class engaged actively in the sports program, in various speech contests, and in dramatics and debate. Our freshman days were swift and busy. In looking back, we find we really had an enjoyable and successful freshman year. We are looking forward with even more expectancy to the sophomore year. Page fourteen Top Row 'l'eresa Gundrum. O W O CLASS OFFICERS Jerry Matenaer - Vice-president Bob Lauson - - - President Barbara Frankow - Secretary-treasurer That blast of cannon just heard was the soph- omore class arriving on the first day of school. In just a few short months we had changed from green freshmen to superior sophs. We wasted no time, but plunged like dolphins into the swing of high school life. Bob Lauson, Jerry Matenaer, and Barbara Frankow were chosen as our class officers. When homecoming rolled around, we partici- pated eagerly. Ethel Frank was our candidate for Queen. Two sophs, Dick Becker and Roger Stoffel helped make the championship football team tops. Ilo Rauscher made the varsity basketball team and played excellent ball. Several fellow classmates gave the track team a boost, among whom was Ed Zautcke, speedy quarter-miler. We dominated all the B teams, with Dennis Kral, Gordon Rose, and Tom Oel- hafen being most outstanding. We really churned up the air waves in speech activities. Dennis Kral and John Moeller, our silver- tongued orators, led the group. Close on their heels were Celia Frank, Dave Gumm and Barbara Laycock. Many others contributed their talents to drama- tic productions, the Clipper staff and the operetta. We sophs shouted loudest at pep-meetings, back- ing our teams to the hilt at all games, and showed an indefatigable school spirit. Page seventeen Top Row --- Lavern O. Here we are juniors with all the prestige and esteem that we had envied so much last year. Now we, too, have attained that social prominence. Soon after school started, we elected Jim Lang as our class president and prom king, Kenny Frank, vice-president and Jacqueline Cook, secretary-trea- surer. We chose our class rings in October. How proudly we flashed them to those who were not yet upperclassmen. After a long and hard struggle against the sen- iors, we finally succeeded in the annual Student Senate campaign to have a representative of the class as an officer. Donna Held became secretary-treasurer. Several juniors played on the football team and helped to make it the best ever. The junior cheer- leaders were Blanche Stowers, Ann Matenaer, and Janine Maxon. Edith Shaw, one of our classmates, reigned as queen at the annual Mid-Winter Snow Ball. Basketball claimed our athletes too Kenny Frank, Danny Duernberger, and Bob Kell. Many Juniors excelled in speech work. For the latter part of the season our A debate team was made up entirely of juniors Mary Lou Millard, Carol Gonring, Walter Ziegler, and Steven Schatz. Highlighting the year was the long-awaited jun- ior prom, held on May 2. Stairway to the Stars was chosen as the theme. The hard work of all the enthusiastic juniors made the prom a great success, Page eighteen 2 e.-L W 1. Top Row lildred Gierach, Harry Grmer, Alex Gosse, Paul Hoffman. H A ' CLASS OFFICERS Joan Wagner - - Secretary-treasurer Charles Spaeth - - - President John Gadow - Vice-president Every now and then we seniors stop to say, Doesn't it seem strange to be a senior and to be graduating in June?l' We have come a long way in four years, and now are proudly and justly able to bear the title of a senior. Oh! how we remember that September morn- ing in 1948 when we entered the high school for the first time. At first we were rather uncertain of ourselves as are all freshmen, but after a few days we knew the school routine quite well. When class elections were held, we selected Don Mayo as presidentg George Brugger as vice-president, and Sandra Kell as secretary-treasurer. We had our first homecoming and realized what an enjoy- able task it was to work on floats and windows. As the year drew to a close. we had established our- selves as loyal citizens of West Bend High. We returned to school that fall and partici- pated in the many activities that took place. For our officers we chose Robert May, presidentg Dick Richie, vice-presidentg and James Miller, secretary- treasurer. When homecoming arrived, Miss Pod- ruch's homeroom received a second place award for its float. Several of the sophomore boys showed their ability at sports, and our class was also well represented in forensics. Then the junior year, one which we will never forget! One of the first things on the agenda for that year was the selection of class rings. We elect- ed class officers, who were James Rosenheimer, president: James Weber, vice-presidentg and Jean Herlin, secretary-treasurer. Again at homecoming we displayed our creative ability, for Mr. Runkells homeroom took first place for its float and Mr. Caldwel1's homeroom first place for its window. Before we knew it, it was time to begin work on the prom, and work we did. The theme was Cin- derella , The crowning of our king, James Rosen- heimer and his queen, Joan Wagner, highlighted the events of that wonderful evening. And now we had reached our most unforget- able years we were seniors. Ronald Larson was elected president of the Student Senate and Charles Spaeth, John Gadow, and Joan Wagner were elected as president, vice-president and secre- tary-treasurer of the senior class. This year proved to be more busy than the rest, for we were always rushing to class play rehearsals and commence- ment committees, getting Bend stories in on time or being fitted for caps and gowns. As we reached the climax of our high school career, we could honestly say it was one job well done. ,J Top Hours of planning College Day Center Hours of work Senior Announcements Committee Beverly Becker Betty Berg Maia Bergmann Barbara Bernhardt Marilyn Bunke Betty Conrad Joel Cook Barbara Dewey Richard Finch Bottom Hours of fun Hobo Day glance fall Paul Fischer Rosemary Fellenz Joanna Franz John Gadovi Ellen Goddard Nancy Hughes Ronald Kral Ronald Larson Barbara Leiser Mary Loduha Margaret McCargo George Mmz Jane Nehrbass Rita Reinders James Sauer Delores Schrank Gladys Stoffel Carol Suchy Horst Wagner Page twenty-one if Mary Ann Arndtx endow SylV13 Baesemann Carol Bastlan Robert Becker Mary Barwlck Paul Baumer Robert Bell Beverly Becker George Behlmg As we sian on a new f reslwlci on y we semors nohce Mathew Belongla Barbara Bernhardt Mala Bergmann Barbara Bohn Marllyn Bunke Gerald Bohn Walter Bykowskl Page twenty two Susan Cannon al ll l ' ' Betty Berg 1 Q X 5 I Y S l 'Y' l?52 Gerald Elsenmannv Mmerva Engelelter Karl Ewert Peter Fantl Joseph Fauster Rosemary Fellenz Karl Flckler Rlchard Flnch Paul Flscher i e an S0 f ecoc sfoppmg ora ews Ori secon S Bonme Chesak Ruth Crass Jerome Dleterlch Betty Conrad J oel Cook Arthur Degmtz Barbara Dew ey Denms Drlcken Glenway Ehnert Page twenty three ll ll J f ll l L ' f f ll .. ! Twelve persons picked from the audience during each performance served as jurors. All of the action of the play took place in the Supreme Court of New York City. The plot of the play is the murder trial of Karen Andre. Karen is accused of the murder of her em- ployer, Bjorn Faulkner, whom she has served as secretary for ten years, and with whom she was also in love. Bjorn Faulkner was an unscrupulous finan- cier of dynamic character who built up a huge for- tune with Karen's help. His interests were vast and stretched over several continents, but at the time of his death his empire had crashed, and he was faced with ruin. He met Nancy Whitfield, whose father was Student director Marilyn Bunke with Miss Peardon One of us is lying ---and we both know which one A g IXTEEN will in Q 5' i a man of great wealth, and arranged a marriage with her in order to secure a loan of 25 million dollars from her father. This huge loan, however, was not enough to save his many enterprises. He then ar- ranged for a false suicide, intending to flee with Karen and start anew in South America. Much evidence is introduced to convict Karen of his murder supposedly because of jealousy, and other evidence points a finger at Mr. Whitfield, his father-in-law. This evidence, as given by numerous witnesses, some comic and others tragic, gives the play its unique qualities, and the audience-jury made it possible to have two different endings-each a satisfactory conclusion. The play was directed by Miss Peardon and Mrs. Erwin, who were assisted by Marilyn Bunke, the student director. Two performances were given. Your fingerprints are on this gun . . During the first semester of the 1951-52 school year officers of the Honor Society were Paul Baumer, president, Ronald Larson, vice-president, Margaret McCargo, secretary, and Joanna Franz, treasurer. Paul Baumer was elected president again the second semester, with Jim Sauer as vice-president, Joanna Franz as secretary and Maia Bergmann as treasurer. The National Honor Society chooses new mem- bers twice a year. In 1951-52, 15 new members were taken into the society because of their qualities of scholarship, character, service, and leadership. Members of the National Honor Society must be juniors or seniors who have spent at least one semes- ter in West Bend High School. Members must have a scholarship average of not less than 8592 and be outstanding in the other qualities mentioned above. Miss Heidner, Miss Stratton, Miss Prahl, Mr. Evenson, Mr. Baxter, and Mr. Panfil are the faculty advisers of the society. The society, one of the school's youngest organi- zations, was organized at the end of the spring term in 1950. Members chosen for the second semester and not pictured are Rosemary Fellenz, Kristine Hoy, Jane Nehrbass, Dick Ruppin, Edith Shaw and Dale Wulff. ofa 6me70eZZ Each year many awards are given to students for outstanding achievements in athletics. debate. schol- arship. leadership. and service at the West Bend High School. Some of the outstanding awards in 1951 were: Jim Jansen and Jackie Case received the 1951 Legion Award from Leroy Gonring for their meri- torious work during their high school career. The awards are given to those who best represent the qualities of courage, service. character, leadership and scholarship. Last year the Thelma Schowalter Scholarship, presented by Norman Schowalter, was given to Elaine Geidel whose character and interest in nursing qualified her to attend the School of Nursing of the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital By possessing qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism, a senior girl is eligible for the D. A. R. Award. Last year Jackie Case was given this outstanding award by Mrs. Nielsen. The student who shows interest and initiative in achieving his high school education in spite of handi- caps and difficulties that he must encounter receives the Kiwanis Award. This award was won by Lillian Hornshoe. D A R. Kenny Award is given each year to the boy and girl debaters who have improved and shown the most progress during the past season. This S100 award may be given to members of any class. Wally Ziegler and Carol Gonring were given this award by Mr. Kenny. The Ziegler Foundation has established a schol- arship program, which provides S300 annually to two outstanding seniors whose scholarship. leadership, and good character enable them to be chosen. Each scholarship may be continued for the duration of a four-year college course. Mr. Kieckhafer presented the awards to two worthy students, Jim Jansen and Carolyn Schloemer. Mr. Bob Pick presented a watch to the honor athlete, Bill Wolf. and a medal to the outstanding girl athlete, Janet Ellmauer. A medal is also given to the seniors for active participation in one. two, or three sports. West Bend's program of rewards for jobs well done is an outstanding feature of school life. Kiwanis Award Bausch Sz Lomb Award Pick Award Kenny Debate Award In the government of the school as in the govern- ment of our country the individual is the most im- portant person. The student council aims to make our school better for you and for every succeeding class that enters through these doors. In the fall of the year every home room elects a senator and an alternate. These members together with President Ron Larson, Vice-president Tom Ack- erman, Secretary-treasurer Donna Held and Mr. Evenson, our adviser, meet to talk over problems pertaining to our school. The first project this year was the homecoming celebration. Committees were appointed to take care of the bonfire, the parade and the many other ar- rangements that help to make a homecoming fun. Under the management of the senate the moni- tor system has been working successfully. Page thirty-six 5 NN Tom Ackerman, Ron Larson, and Donna Held Two senators were elected to represent us at the Little Ten Council meetings and to exchange ideas with other schools. The senate also sponsored a successful variety show to raise money for the student activity card, thereby saving the students much money. The activ- ity card admits the students to games, dances and other extra-curricular activities and pays for the Clipper and a down payment on the Bend. A committee of senators was appointed to tabu- late the points each class earned toward the achieve- ment cup and to see which class should receive it. An Alma Mater was also adopted. In these ways, as well as in many other actions. the Senate carried out its task of representing the individual student. Under his direction the West Bend Choral Club has grown from one small chorus to six different groups. These groups, at one time or another during the year, have sung at the meetings of civic groups, such as Kiwanis, Womenis Auxiliary of the American Legion, the Woman's Club, and broadcasts over WBKV. Wisconsin State Teachers College brought its choral clinic to West Bend in the fall for the purpose of helping students with problems of correct breath- ing and tone production. Each of the choral club members had a chance to talk with one of the choral clinic students to improve his own technique. All of the six choruses presented a memorable Christmas program of sacred and semi-classical songs to Kiwanis, to the student body, and to the public. SOPHOMORE MIXED CHORUS Top Row David Gumm. Because the band represents the school at all these functions during the year, it must constantly maintain its high standard. The weekly lesson given to each member is the key to the band's success. As the time for the March 16th Midwin- ter Concert drew near, various sections of the band met after school and worked hard pol- ishing up rough spots in their own groups. But there was fun, too. In December the band enjoyed a skating party at the Artistic Roller Rink and attended the Mardi Gras in Chicago. Chuck Gessert acted as the student conductor. During the six years that Harold M. Shlimovitz has been director, the band has achieved and maintained a fine record. It was directed by Miss Peardon and Mrs. Erwin. The play is enacted in a one-room basement studio in Greenwich Village. The opening scene shows Ruth tMary Lou Millardl and her sister Eileen 1Sue Kircherl inspecting the room as prospective tenants. Because the two girls came from the 'small town' of Columbus, Ohio, they had little sales resist- ance and so they accepted the room. Their new land- lord was Mr. Apopolous lChuck Gessertl. The only window of the room opened toward the street, below the level of the sidewalk over which passed many strange characters who wanted to be- come acquainted with the two girls. Among them were two drunks, Wilbert Lucka and Ken Miller, a street Arab portrayed by Bob Bell, the policeman, Lonigan, enacted by Joe Altschaefl and lastly the six future admirals of the Brazilian navy , Bob Buchelt, John Koehn, Bob Lauson, Jerry Marsden, Don Peiffer and Wayne Severson. Sharing the building were other strange people, the former Georgia basketball player nicknamed The Wreck fJohn Gadowj, his wife, Helen Wade lElsie Gerhardtl, and her mother, Mrs. Wade fArlette Zahnl. After a few months the girls' father fRon Krall comes to New York to persuade them to come home. They refuse because each has fallen in love, Ruth with Robert Baker QJ im Sauerl, and Eileen with Chic Clark tDon Mayoj. Mr. Fletcher fLes Merriaml and Frank Lippencott tWally Zieglerl, also interested in the two girls, help to complicate the plot. The entire cast, the directors and all who worked on the play are to be complimented. SENATE VARIETIES Another fall production, the Senate Varieties. was as great a success as the first one performed just last year. It was a great triumph for Mr. Shlimo- vitz and other teachers who helped, as well as for the cast and backstage crew. As the curtains parted, the audience heard the swing band begin the show. There was a great variety of acts and talents with performers arrayed in widely different and sometimes odd-looking attire. Among some of these were the flapper costumes of the twen- Page forty-six In front of all those people! As this year's junior class began preparations for their prom. we as seniors looked back at our Cinderella Prom which was held on May 4, 1951. All of us wondered who the queen would be. How- ever, everyone had to wait until King Jim Rosenheimer revealed the identity of his queen, Joan Wagner, at the Pre-prom Dance. The queen's attendants and their es- corts were Barbara Dewey and Ronald Larson, Mary Wickert and James P. Weber, Barbara Bohn and Robert May, Lois Penoske and Robert Wiedmeyer, Carol Suchy and Don Mayo, and Dorothy Lang and James Miller. The theme of the prom, a Cinderella idea, trans- formed the gym into a huge ballroom. Murals depicting the story of Cinderella were hung on two sides of the gym. A mural of a castle formed the background of the stage. A huge white star on a blue background hung from the ceilingg a large clock was built over the center door of the gym. As the clock chimed twelve, the king and queen and their court came through this door into the ballroom. After the grand march everyone con- tinued to dance to the music of Steve Swedish and his orchestra. All of us who had worked on the various commit' tees could be justly proud of the efforts which turned the junior prom into a never-to-be-forgotten success. Last years royalty. After the severe graduation losses, no one expected the fighting Badgers to do more than win a few games. But after battling up hill all the way, West Bend again shared the Little Ten football championship. Coaches Caldwell and Runkel built their back- field around returning lettermen Louie Miller, Ron Larson and Norb Wickman. Ken Frank rounded out the backfield as quarterback. The line was solid from end to end. Chuck Spaeth, Jim Rosenheimer, Bob Wiedmeyer, Don Mayo, Dick Schloemer, and Bob Kissinger were some of the mulemen opening up holes. During the course of the year another honor was bestowed upon the team. Louie Miller was given a position on West Bend's Fighting Badgers all star, all-school team. The only mar on the record of a very successful year was the defeat at the hands of an eager Greendale team. This broke a winning streak that covered two years. The spirits of the Caldwell eleven were not dampened, however, and they came back the follow- ing week to slice off a share of the championship cake by holding a strong Oconomowoc team scoreless, The 1951 version of Co-champions of the Little Ten did not have superior ability, but their will-to-win made every minute of a game count. This, according to Coaches Caldwell and Runkel, was one of the main reasons a supposedly weak eleven could be turned into a strong title contender. Injuries plagued the Caldwell men from the opening of the season, sometimes forcing starting men to vacate their positions in crucial games. The fact that the team could call on able reserve strength was a supporting factor in its success. A fighting football team needed a victory to keep its championship hopes alive. By coming through with a top performance, they overwhelmed Berlin 32 to 0. Festivities started with the traditional toothpick hunt. At Tom Ackerman's signal, the entire student body rushed onto the field in quest of the toothpick. Lucky finder Babette Rohrmann later crowned the queen and set the torch to the bonfire. And what a bonfire! Never before had we seen such a tremendous blaze. It was the result of hours of toil by John Koehn's bonfire committee. Crowning of Queen Margaret McCargo highlighted the inspiring pep-meeting. Margaret's court consisted of Barbara Sonnenberg, Ethel Frank, and Dian Degnitz. Later, following the tussle with the Indians, we Went to a victory dance and celebrated to the music of Pete Ochfs Orchestra. During the intermission following the featured grand march, Ron Larson, president of the senate, announced the winners of the largest homecoming parade in the history of the school. After the thirty floats and window displays were judged, Mr. Bert- ram's homeroom float Bombard Berlin and Mr. Williamsl, Mr. Schuelke's, and Miss Podruch's home- room windows were declared the winners. For this happy occasion a good share of credit must go to the committees of the Student Senate who planned the festivities. Pyramiding the bonfire, Babette Rohrmann lights the bonfire, The big blaze. The team was cut down to playing strength after the first week of practice which consisted of learning the fundamentals of the game. By the time the first game rolled around, both coach and players were filled with the will to win. They proved this by romping over a strong Menomonee Falls team twice and winning the conference opener against Mayville. The end of the season found West Bend in fifth place behind Hartford. which captured the Little Ten Championship with an undefeated season. After the regular season, the Badgers traveled to Waupun to participate in the tournament. In a fast and furious first game against a strong third- place Ripon team. Coach Kuss with the championship trophy In spring a young man's thoughts turn to base- ball. As head baseball coach for his first year, Mr. Kuss, as well as the team, had hopes for a good sea- son. But behind the pitching of Bill Wolf and lefty Bob Theisen, the Badgers not only copped the Little Ten Championship, but also won the state tourna- ment. West Bend High was honored to know it had the best baseball team in Wisconsin. Throughout the year the team strategy was based on hard running and playing to Win. The Bad- gers were the only team in the Little Ten, and pos- sibly in the state, that could send three left-handed hitters to the plate in a row and expect a hit from each one. These were: last yearls batting king Bob Theisen, Bob Kissinger, and Lyle Soyk. The outfield was fast and strong and boasted the speed of Louie Miller. Richard Schuetz, Dick Boden, Lyle Soyk, Cy Johnson and Don Mayo comprised the rest of the Z outfield. Of these only two were seniors. For an infield, West Bend had one of the finest keystone combinations in the state, Don Gumm and Ken Frank. For the double-play combination one had only to add Bob Kissinger or Louis Miller at first base. Over on the hot corner Bob May was stopping line drives as though they had handles. He completed a sound infield that was basically the best in the Little Ten. The catching chores were ably handled by the return of Harvey Rose. Some observers, including Coach Kuss, credit a lot of Bill Wolf's success to Harvey. Besides having Rose, the Badgers also could call on either Dick Boden or Cy Johnson to don the mask behind the plate. Walt Nommensen, pitcher, rounded out the team. This baseball nine not only won regional, district and sectional championships but went on to win the state championship. They became the first team in this area ever to do the trick. ,av Back Row Harvey Rose, Ron Johnson, Bob Kissing- er, Bob May, Don Mayo, Lyle Soyk, Dick Boden, Don Gumm, Richard Schuetz, Coach Kuss. 'Z The West Bend High School speedsters turned in one of their best performances in recent years during the 1951 track season. As the forecasters had figured early in the season, Beaver Dam won the Little Ten Champion- ship with Cooney's defending champs running second. However, the Badgers stretched their legs to surprise the conference experts and raced into a third-place tie with Hartford. After this unex- pected showing in the conference duel, the thin- clads really upset the forecasters' dopebasket by squeezing past seven other schools, including Bea- ver Dam, Cooney and Hartford, to come in second in the district tourney. Russ Wiskerchen, Roger Heid, Rich Stoffel, A1 Hupfer, Don Klumb and Tevis Reynolds all placed first or second in this meet and became eligible for the state meet in Madison. At the state, Russ soared to third place in the pole vault and was the only Badger to score points. Coaches Jack Runkel and Bob Caldwell turned a green and inexperienced squad into a top-notch group of runners. It is encouraging to note that a large number of underclassmen were included in the team, so that prospects look very bright for the 1952 season. Tom Giombetti practices for the high jump. The gun for the 100-yard dash. Russ Wiskerchen clears the bar. Each year the West Bend High School golf team eagerly awaits the coming of spring. As soon as the snow disappears, the members of the team, Alex Gosse, Wally Ziegler, Steve Schatz, and Jim Sauer are seen out on the campus getting into shape for the coming season. Last year after many weeks of practice with coach Roy Grignon, the team entered its first meet at Hartford and placed third. The next meet was held at Mayville. When the final score was tabulated, West Bend was in second place. After these practice meets, the team took part in the annual Hartford invitational. The final meet of the season was the Little Ten Tournament held at Oconomowoc. After a gruelling 18 holes the team placed sixth. It was here that coach Grignon proved himself by placing among the top three coaches in the Little Ten. This same golf team in 1952 gained two first places in the first three meets. The team members made a fine showing in the Championship golf meet at Waupun. With the team undefeated until the state tourna- ment. the 1951 tennis season turned out to be a bet- ter one than had been anticipated in early practices. The team started off against St. Mary's of Fond du Lac and won, 5-2. Shorewood and Fond du Lac High met their defeat at the hands of the Badgers, who then sailed into Beaver Dam and Mayville, beating them 8-1 and 7-2. respectively. Sheboygan North com- petition was rough, but was overcome 3-2. After that, it was full steam ahead, with the Badgers downing Waupun, Oconomowoc. and Sheboygan Central. At the Little Ten Tournament West Bend came out on top. Jim Meinberg won the singles champion- ship, and Bill Stern took second place. Gibby Bruckmueller and Dan Duernberger came up with the doubles trophy. Ron Koehn took the third man singles . West Bend also won the team trophy and finished with 23 points.
