edzcatzon The bulldmg of character and wholesome attltudes the desrre of youth to strlve for fanrness these are the Ideals of the man to whom we the semor class dedicate our l950 Bend Mr Harold W Hoopman a natlve of Oostburg Wrs consm came to the crty of West Bend m I943 to become a member of the hrgh school teaching staff and to assume the posltlon of Director of Cnty Athletics The latter task dnd not only concern athletics but also Involved the plan mng of a complete recreatlonl program for young and old As a member of the faculty at West Bend Hugh School Mr Hoopman teaches Latin I and ll and cltrzenshlp He IS also faculty adviser of the Latm Club one of the most actrve clubs ln school As head of the recreational department Mr Hoopman promoted the many actlvltles at the clty park and enlarged the playground program to the extent of havlng three supervlsors The handicraft department which rs Included rn the hobby actlvltles not only IS very educational but also provxdes fun for the youth of West Bend One of the outstandlng events of the summer at the clty park IS the League Softball Tournament Thrs too IS supervised by Mr Hoopman The first Sunday ln August rs set aside for the crtlzens of West Bend to enjoy and make use of the many f3CllltlCS which are otherwrse utllrzed by the public The recreational program however IS not dlscontlnued during the wmter months Then comes a new and thrrlllng pastnme the toboggan slide provides the excitement craved by many lce skating ns another enjoyable sport For adults Mr Hoopman has square dancmg classes For the younger set baton twrrllng became an mterestlng dlversron Mr Hoopman IS a man our class recognizes as an outstanding teacher and a leader ln communlty actxvltnes For devoting himself unselflshly to a flne program of recreation that Includes young and old the class of 1950 IS glad to pay thus tribute to Mr Hoopman an outstanding teacher and leader ln community actlvltres Page foul Aff fiarold W, lfoopman . r v v v ' ' I I - n v - - , . y ' ' - v n - ' v v . v . - -

f ind' I I TIIATIO Finishing his second year in Vvest Bend, Superintendent Fred Holt is the director of the educational pro- gram from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. He has B. S. and M. S, degrees from the University of Wisconsin. lVIr. Warren Evenson, complet- ing his third year as our principal, supervises all student and faculty activities in the high school, He has received a B, S. degree from La- Crosse State Teachers College, an lVl. A. degree from the University of Chicago, and is now working toward his doctor of philosophy degree at FRED HOLT VVAIQIREN L, EVENSON . U ' Superintendent Principal the University of Chicago. The five members of the Board of Education. as the policymaking group of West Bend's public schools, have spent a busy year. In April, l949, two new mem- bers were elected: lVIr. Henry Dhein, jr., director, to succeed lVIr. james R. Brown, and lVlr. Leslie Handke to succeed lVIr. Robert Barber. After discussing school building details, the board approved the plans for expanding the school plant with two new additions. These include an enlargement of the industrial arts department, an agriculture class- room with testing facilities and additional locker room space for athletics. Other problems with which the Board has been concerned are the reorganization of the school district, school finances, and meetings with various teacher groups. Superintendent Holt, Principal Evenson, and the five members on the board of education are working together constantly to improve the educational pro- gram in West Bend. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION R. J.
