He has B. S. and M. S, degrees from the University of Wisconsin. lVIr. Warren Evenson, complet- ing his third year as our principal, supervises all student and faculty activities in the high school, He has received a B, S. degree from La- Crosse State Teachers College, an lVl. A. degree from the University of Chicago, and is now working toward his doctor of philosophy degree at FRED HOLT VVAIQIREN L, EVENSON . U ' Superintendent Principal the University of Chicago. The five members of the Board of Education. as the policymaking group of West Bend's public schools, have spent a busy year. In April, l949, two new mem- bers were elected: lVIr. Henry Dhein, jr., director, to succeed lVIr. james R. Brown, and lVlr. Leslie Handke to succeed lVIr. Robert Barber. After discussing school building details, the board approved the plans for expanding the school plant with two new additions. These include an enlargement of the industrial arts department, an agriculture class- room with testing facilities and additional locker room space for athletics. Other problems with which the Board has been concerned are the reorganization of the school district, school finances, and meetings with various teacher groups. Superintendent Holt, Principal Evenson, and the five members on the board of education are working together constantly to improve the educational pro- gram in West Bend. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION R. J. Vile began our careers in high school in fine style by electing Richard Martiny. president: Elaine Boettcher, vice-president: and jim Kuehn, secretary-treasurer of our class. All of us were determined to find new interests and friends here by the end of the year. As we began our sophomore year, Luke Heppe. Richard Daggett, and Ken Troedel were elected our class officers. We took an active part in many school activi- ties and clubs. Some of us were on teams in sports or debate. Now we were acquainted with school life and were looking forward to the events of the coming year. Ar last we were upperclassmen, juniors. Our class rings, 'Skystreaksf' were proudly displayed by all. Helen Hausmann and Dave Grogan reigned over our prom. The theme, Moonlight Sonata , will be remem- bered by everyone. Handling the financial affairs were Joyce Promersberger, secretary-treasurer and Richard Daggett, vice-president. Many of our boys displayed their abilities in sports. Charles Stracka, ,lim Drew, Gene Schloemer, David Grogan, and Walter Boerger were some of our stars. Helping to cheer our boys on to victory were cheerleaders: Ella German, Marilyn Leit- heiser, Wanda Mertens, and Lillian Meunier. But all these things seemed to fade with the magic word, Senior. Rebecca was chosen as the class play and the members of the cast worked energetically to make it a success. As graduation drew near, the class selected their class memorial, and plans were made for a senior class banquet. The months passed quickly, and all too soon we were no longer students of W. B. H. S. F. A. Dramatics Forensics Debate Clubs Page twenty-svven The Governing Bod The student senate of West Bend High tries to follow the high ideals of a democratic form of govern- ment. Representatives chosen from each homeroom meet under the able leadership of President Curt Claus, Vice-president Ed Blohm, and Secretary-trea- surer Ruth Kahl. to discuss and plan for a better school for the entire student body. One of the greatest achievements of the student senate this year was the establishment of a workable monitor system. For years our school had been both- ered with a hallway problem. After studying the prob- lem at length, the senate, backed by the student body, organized a monitor system. Thus far it has proven successful, even though it has been in existence for only a short time. Another great project of the senate concerned a student activity card. Plans have been completed to establish such a card here at West Bend, This card would be purchased by students at the beginning of the school year and would entitle them to all school activities throughout the year. The senate hopes to see this plan become a reality. The magazine sales campaign was again handled very ably by the senate, profits being divided among all clubs in the school that participated in the cam- paign. Two of our senators again represented West Bend at the Little Ten Student Council Meetings. At these conferences our senators exchanged ideas with other schools and developed a better all-'round understand- ing of student government bodies. Other items of school business such as planning homecoming, conducting a lost and found department, and tabulating the achievement cup points, were also again handled well by the Senate, along with some problems presented by the student body to the senate. ln order to present a successful homecoming pro- gram, it became necessary for the student senate to Jack VVeninger' congratulates the newly elected Studs nt Senate Officers. President Curt Claus, Viet--president Ld Blohnr, Secr'vtzrr'y-tr'e:isiirer' Ruth Kzihl. appoint several different committees. lt was their duty to plan the various activities, which were to take place. Through their efforts it became an unforgettable event. The business of the lost and found department entails the keeping of a complete record of all items lost and found within the school or on the campus. Toward the end of the school term all unclaimed articles were displayed for the benefit of the students who had lost something. Tabulation of the achievement cup points also involved a good deal of consideration. The committee consisting of several of the senators worked consist- ently in order to reach a fair decision. Thus we can see, that our student senate is living up to our ideals of a democracy-a government of the students, by the students and for the students. Trip How---Jolrn Schaefgen. Dick Mur- tiny. With the assistance of Dave Grogan as advertising manager and Dick Dag- gett as business manager, the editors earnestly began to assemble a new and original layout. When our adviser, lVlr. Baxter, introduced us to some of the many new terms such as dummy, mount- ing, and half-tones. we were baffled and confused. But by putting forth all efforts possible, we felt that even- tually things would begin to piece together, This, we soon discovered to be true. Top How-H Ruth Kalrl. l'lf'l1lrQ'H Schowzrltt-r. Therefore it must be based on firm principles. For this reason we decided to use the building idea for a theme. ln October assignments were posted. and the staff bf-gan its work. Energetic writers hurried to meet deadlines. while accurate typists waited for their articles. lnteresting facts and original ideas went into the composition of the dummy, which was slowly beginning to take form. Meanwhile the advertising staff was busily obtain- ing sponsorships. Much enthusiasm was displayed. and soon we exceeded our goal. The many events of the year, such as football, asemblies. plays. basketball. the prom, and concerts passed quickly: meanwhile, pictures were taken. Ar the same time Bend artists were busily sketching fig- ures to illustrate the theme. This is but a brief outline of the many activities which go into the making of a year book. Much credit is due lxlr. Baxter who in his con- stant direction has helped in making the annual a fine publication, Finally, when the Bend was distributed, the staff felt that it had completed a project which told the story of a memorable year. Such an ex- ample is West Bend High Schoolvs newspaper, the Campus Clipper, lts active staff has worked efficiently to hold to the traditions of a good school paper. About twenty issues have rolled off the press during the last year, not counting those commemorat- ing special occasions. Due to the combined efforts of Miss Hogue and Miss Schreiner, the advisers, and the staff, this has been made possible. Richard Daggett held the job of editor-in-chief. The post of news editor was held by Audrey Troedel, and the feature depart- ment was managed by Marilyn Moeller. Dave Grogan was sports editor, Joyce Gessert, art editor, and james Jansen acted as business manager. Much of the credit for a good paper can also be given to the typists, gen- eral writers and the business staff. The students and teachers as a whole, too, have co-operated with the staff in releasing news and offering suggestions for improvement. Again this year, the gossip column has gradually been reduced to make way for better and more inter- esting material. Especially outstanding this past year was the enlarged sports section and the increased number of articles of general interest. These changes were made in order that all students might find some item of interest in the paper. -... e--is :ex Clipper Editors: Dave Grogan, Jim Jansen, Joyce Ge-sse it Marilyn Moeller, Audrty Troedf-1, Dick Daggett Seniors on the staff who will be graduating this June are Richard Daggett, Audrey Troedel, Marilyn Moeller, Dave Grogan, Joyce Gessert, Tonie Ellmauer, Betty Neeb, Marilyn Berres, Carol Kletti, Carolyn Slavik, Laverne Dalum, and Virginia Hassmer. Although many of the veterans on the staff will be leaving journalism in West Bend High, one can rest assured that the fine standards will be carried on in the future, The members of the staff were greatly benefitted through knowledge which they have acquired as: editors, writers, artists, and typists, ln publishing the Clipper, they have learned the actual steps necessary in the preparation of a newspaper. lr is knowledge such as this, which later on serves as a background in obtaining a future position in journalism, 1' p How-U Barbara Leiser, Marilyn Moeller, David Grogan. ' ' f ' A beautiful fall night, the first con- test of the year, an inexperienced Badger team, the Green Bulldog to gain. the town and student body waiting to pass judgment on the i949 football squad, the lights burning brightly at Harvey Bruhy Memorial Field, this was the pic- ture before the Port game. The local team, co-captained by Bill Wolf and Lewie Schmidt and working unusually well as a unit, terminated a long series of defeats that it had suffered from Port Washington football teams. The backfield was aided in its scoring drives by two line-men. Butch Hupfer and Lewie Schmidt both intercepted pass- es which resulted in tallies. These two touchdowns, coupled with one by Bill Wolf, put the Badgers ahead, 21 to 0. The first conference game of the sea- son was played on the Waupun field un- der the lights. Waupun boasted a confer- ence record in past years bettered only by Beaver Dam. The Badger defense tightened, however, just before the inter- mission time, and though the score at the end of the first half was 26 to 0, Waupun did not score again. The next week in spite of duties as a good host, West Bend badly defeated a confused but scrappy Horicon team on the home field. The game, highlighted by back, jim Miller, was rejuvenating for everyone except Horicon. The fine offen- sive and defensive play of the whole line. particularly that of jim Kuehn and ,lim Drew and the backfield were contribut- ing factors in this top-heavy score. into each life some rain must fall . Ar Beaver Dam there was a flood which caught West Bend on the wet end of a 47 to 0 score. Handicapped by the loss of jim Haebig, ,lim Miller and Russ Wisker- chen who broke his ankle in a previous practice, the Red and White was stymied. Substitute backs, Ed Blohm, Francis Groth, and Don Klumb performed well in the offensive attack, The line, though greatly out-weighed, displayed unusual courage and never stopped fighting until the game was over, The fifth game on the schedule was the contest with our rival Hartford. The local team was held scoreless until the last few seconds when freshman halfback Ed Blohm ran a kickoff for seventy-eight yards. The final count was 20 to 7. Battling a combination of a heavy rain and a fast Columbus football team, the Badgers waded through the opposi- tion in their annual homecoming tilt to make that celebration a complete success. The line-men, Grogan, Stracka, Schloe- mer, allowed Columbus only one score A TEAM Top Row --- J. J si n s 1- n , R Vogel. F. Ge-rek. A. Belon- giza. H Boden, VV. Se-ide man.J.Schaefgen.H Herman. However, the wet condition of the field prevented extensive scoring. George Brugger, Mighty Might of the squad, playing his first game at fullback this year, was injured in the early part of the game, Miller and Haebig each scored one touchdown from inside the ten-yard line. One extra point was made by Wolf. The final gun found Columbus on the short end of a I3 to 6 count. The Badgers were defeated in the last game of the year played on the home field against an undefeated Ripon squad. Again all the scoring was done in the first half. After the first Ripon score, jim Miller slipped through tackle and went 70 yards for a Red and W'hite touchdown, The score at the half tells the rest of the story. The Ripon team was leading 20 to 6 at the intermis- sion. However, led defensively by Rich Stoffel, Bill Michalsen, and .lim Drew, the Red and Vlfhite made a thorough comeback in the second half, The game ended with the half-time score, 20 to 6. jim Drew and Bill Wolf, who played excep- tionally well throughout the season, were elected honorary co-captains. The B team, under the head-coaching of Carl Kuss and assistant Gene Zarelc. had a successful season. Playing a six-game schedule with Little Ten teams they were undefeated and untied. The climax of the season arrived when the last game was played here against the undefeated B team from Mayville, Mayville was defeated by a I2 to 6 score. 'I'orr---Cozich Sum Dehlerlt. Although they won three games, the team lost several heartbreakers which might have been won with a few breaks and a little luck. ln the first non-conference game with Menomonee Falls, the Badgers were defeated by the score of 27- 22. The team set a hot tempo in the first quarter by scoring I4 points but could not maintain the pace. Boerger was high scorer with I0 points. ln a return engagement, the Falls boys again were victorious. The Badgers avenged two defeats received last year from the Plymouth squad by defeating the visi- tors 42-34 after leading 24-l4 at halftime. High- scoring honors again went to Boerger with I2 points, Later in the season, Plymouth was the victor on its home court 25-22. The opening conference tilt found our team losing to Berlin 38-32 because of a weak finish. Leading 27-26 at the end of the third quarter, the Badgers could not hold the lead. The high scorer honors for the contest went to Schacht with I0 points. The following Friday, the Badgers lost to a strong Beaver Dam five 48-35. The team, however, matched the host point for point in the second half. Guard Bill Wolf was high scorer for the game with I0 points. ln a non-conference game. the Badgers dropped their fourth straight tilt when they were defeated by Cedarburg 48-3l. Schacht with I4 points was high scorer. The Badgers displayed some of their best form A TEAM Top Row --- Coach Kuss. Ronald Larson. Gilbert Biuckmueller, Jim Meinberg, Ronald Johnson. Ken Frank. The third conference game for the Badgers with Mayville, a thriller, ended with the score 38-35. Fighting for their second victory of the season, the Badgers defeated Kewaskum 4I-34. Wolf was high man with I6 points. During the Christmas recess the varsity was de- feated by an alumni squad 45-4l in an overtime period, which was very exciting. Returning to conference action, the Badgers were defeated in high-scoring games with Hartford 55-25 and the next week by Oconomowoc 48-32. Following a non-conference loss to Port Washing- ton 36-33, the Badgers looked very impressive despite a loss to the champion Ripon 46-37. The Badgers were also unsuccessful in their seventh and eighth conference games, losing to Wau- pun 58-40 and Horicon 30-25, Boerger was high scorer in both games. The Badgers' home game with Hartford was a far different game. The team made Hartford work for every point before bowing 50-42. Schacht was high man with I6 points. Scoring their first conference win, the Badgers overcame an eight point Columbus first-half margin to emerge victorious 4l-35. Schacht netted I7 points. The Badgers entered the regional tournament at Waupun, but were trounced by Waupun 54-29 and were edged out by Berlin 33-30.
