.....CPI,E DID SPEAKERS. The preparation for the I949 forensic season began early in February. Everyone looked forward to the school contests. wondering who would represent West Bend in the league contest. joel Hetland represented the school in original oratory: Phyllis lndermuehle and Marilyn Moeller took part in the extemporaneous speaking, and Dave Grogan and Eugene Sawyer gave their four minute memorized speeches. ln the extemporaneous reading contest, Ann Lauson and Carolyn Schloemer were West Bend's winners, while Joan Kircher and Darlyne DeTuncq took part in humorous declamation and Clara Mae Miller and Doris Ruhnke represented West Bend in serious declamation. On March 26 these students went to Waupun, where the league and Little Ten contests were held, Seven of the students received A ratings and were eligible to take part in the district contest at Port Washington. Ar the Little Ten contest Phyllis and Marilyn took first and second place respectively in extemporaneous speaking and Joel took second place in original oration. On April 9, the National Forensic League Contest was held in Milwaukee. Ann Lauson, a sophomore. did a fine job for West Bend by winning second place in extemporaneous reading. Of the students who went to the district contest. Phyllis, Marilyn, Ann and Joel received A's and took part in the state contest, held in Madison on April 23. At Madison Joel and Phyllis earned A ratings, while Marilyn and Ann received B ratings. West Bend High was well represented by the forensic squad this year, and is indeed proud of the record the students made. Everyone was interested in winning a prize at the school contest. The B. C. Ziegler Forensic Fund pro- vided sl 00 for awards for these winners. Cash awards are given to extemporaneous speakers, while book awards of the students' own choosing are given for the other prizes. This year the forensic squad took part in the National Forensic League Contest, The Little Ten, the League, the District, and the State Contests. This year the forensic department was under the direction of Mr. Paul Peterson and Miss Ann Snyder. Their untiring efforts directed toward producing our squad of splendid speakers bore fruit in the form of the awards won by the school's representatives.
