Mr. Fred Holt, our congenial superintendent, has found his first year in West Bend a very busy one. Although occupied with the details of a building program, lVlr. Holt reports, ua very enjoy- able year. Mr. Holt came to West Bend from the Boscobel schools. He has B. S. and M. S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin. This year the five members of the board of education, after endless hours of conference and planning, have been able to begin the new building program for the McLane School. M' E f if 4 Glorious Gu of the Gridiron As the team streamed out of the locker room on the night of September l0th for the first game of the season, the crowd let out a roar which echoed over the field. The opponents were New Holstein, a strong but not a too powerful team. The Badgers were tense at the start, for their real strength was not known. After Kuhn made some wide sweeps around the ends, with Wolf pounding out the needed yardage for the first downs, the team knew they would be on the long end of the score. C39-61. After the game, as the team was relaxing, they thought of the forthcoming game with Columbus away from home. When the players ran onto the held from the bus, they knew they had plenty of support by the cheering which reached all corners of the field. Early in the first quarter Bob Reichert with an exhibition of expert pass-catching made a touchdown. This, com- bined with the splendid defense and offense of jack- lin, helped put West Bend on the long end of the score, C18-63. The next game was played with an old rival, Hartford. lnto this game went all the fighting spirit the boys could muster. But unfortunately the strength and speed of l-lartford's backfield and line was much too strong, and the Badgers found themselves on the short end of the score, C7-332. With the bitter defeat of the Hartford game still ringing in their ears, with revenge in their eyes, the Battling Badgers left for Mayville. With great team- work and plenty of fighting spirit the team rolled over Mayville by a score of 20-7. There was such alertness in the line that Rose soon intercepted a lateral and ran for a touchdown, The sharp downfield blocking on the part of quarterback jim Bell helped get the halfbacks in the clear. The next game at Port was an exciting, but a heartbreaking game. With the Badgers ahead by seven points lVlonohan of Port made a freak ninety-yard run. Port's other touchdown was earned by driving the length of the field. The Badgers, with fighting spirit, showed that even when the chips were down they woulcln't give up. The most talked about game for years to come was the l948 homecoming game with Berlin. Berlin outweighed the Battling Badgers eight pounds per Page ten Top --- Con ch Run k vl 4-nlmchffr. R. Three outstanding players of this game were Krueger, whose rugged defensive playing on the two-yard line helped put back Berlin for a good lossy Haebig, whose pass catch- ing gave West Bend a needed touchdown, and Ger- man, who laid a downfield block so Haebig could get the needed touchdown. The next game was against our rival Oconomowoc. This was a tense, hard-fought contest for both sides. Hoelz, who caught a pass when the score was I3-7, Oconomowocg and Dabringer, whose alertness enabled him to recover a fumble behind Cooneyis goal line, helped put the Badgers on the winning side with a score of Zl-l3. The game with Waupun was a hard fought con- test. The expert defensive play of Albrecht and Herman, along with the rest of the team's determina- tion not to give up, helped keep the game to a tie score. The students of each homeroom worked industriously on their floats and window decorations, hoping that the judges would award the prize to them. A great deal of the credit for a successful home- coming goes to the Student Senate. The commmittees were composed of Parade --- joel Hetland, chairman, Evelyn Spartz, Pat Denker, and Roland Vogelg Bon- fire --- jack Koehn, chairman, jerry Miller, and Her- man Casperg Window Displays --- Elaine Bohn, chair- man, janice Koth, Joyce Bauer, and Mary Hetebruegg Social Committee --- Marlyn Reirike, chairman, Katie Vogt, Dave Grogan, Ann Lauson, and Phyllis lnder- muehle. The first event on the list of homecoming activities was the hunt for the red and white stick on Thursday, October Zl. Senior Joel Hetland found it and had the honor of crowning the queen and lighting the home- coming bonfire. The colorful parade took place Thursday night at 7:30 p. m., and was followed by a huge bonfire on the high school campus. As the materials from the floats were thrown in, the bonfire was reflected in happy and hopeful eyes. Queen Pearl Miller reads the Homecoming Proclamation surrounded by her court: Joan Potter, Bette Lziufer and Joyce Prornersbel ger. CD Q1 I Q. The game began promptly at S oiclock on Friday night. Sparked by the spirit of homecoming and the cheering crowd, our team rolled over the Berlin squad by a score of l2-0. After the game excited students flocked to the McLane School for the big homecoming dance. The grand march was led by Queen Pearl Miller and her escort King Ken Herman, with Joyce Promersberger, joan Potter, and Bette Laufer completing the Court of Honor. During the intermission we gathered around the stage to hear Dan Kuhn, Homecoming Chairman, announce the results of the float and window display contest. Miss Heidneris senior homeroom took first place in window display. with Miss Marshallis and Miss Neffs homerooms taking second and third re- spectively. First place in the float contest went to Mr. Eggerfs junior homeroom, while Miss Podruchis and Mr. Schwehr's homerooms captured second and third places. After dancing to the music of George Cayton, we departed tired but happy. Our game had been won, and our homecoming was a success. We'll all remem- ber this year as the year we made happy homecoming history. The Washington County Pioneers opened activities this fall by initiating twenty-three new members into their club. The club adviser, Miss Heidner, has a close contact with Wisconsin historical research, being a member of the State Historical Society. The interesting museum gives the students an opportunity to concen- trate on local history. This year films about the history of Wisconsin were shown. Officers for this year were Betty Tuchscherer, president: Wilbert Koller, vice-president, and Katie Vogt, secretary-treasurer. LATIN CLUB The S. P. R., famous for its fun and food is one of the most active clubs in school. Under the direction of Harold Hoopman, the club adviser, it has made outstanding accomplishments throughout the year. Plans were made this year for the Latin Club Banquet, held every spring. The theme was the Saturnalia Festival, which was done in Roman style. The officers of the group are president, Russell Wislcircheng vice-president, Mary Otteng secretary- treasurer, .Inet Schneiss, Page fourteen 5 I fig? This year club members served at debate luncheons and the Dairy Herd lmprovement Association Banquet. The club is under the leadership of Miss Ryan and the officers Betty Lang, Marlene Hartleb, Marcia Ritger, Pauline Schneider and Helen Guth. FUTURE FARMERS The F. F. A. is a club for boys who are interested in farm problems and progressive agricultural methods. The activities of the club opened last fall with the fifth annual Parent and Son Banquet. Again on February Sth the chapter was host to the Junior Dairymen. The second semester found many boys preparing their projects for the Bred Gilt Sale held on February 16th. Robert Hosp was sent to the F. F. A. speaking convention. Mr. Arthur Kurtz, the agricultural instructor, is club adviser. DRAIVIATIC CLUB The Stage Door Stars , was directed by Miss Snyder and Mr. Swiger. This year the club has been divided into three separate sections. Besides the Acting Sec- tion, there was the Make-Up and Costuming sections open to those people who were interested in the behind-the-scenes work. The Make-up Section of the club studied the general use of make-up and how to apply it. Much time was spent on the different ways of aging people on the stage. Members of this section had charge of the make-up for the senior class play this year. The Costuming section offered to the members an oppor- tunity to show their talents on making elaborate costumes for the play UEvery Man given by the members of the dramatic section. A one-act comedy mlihe Flattering Word was entered in the Little Ten Contest and then went to the League Contest in Milwaukee and received a HB rating. Not only did this section of the club receive an opportunity to act on the stage but Mr. Swiger also taught the members the fundamentals of acting. The officers who did such a fine job were Presi- dent Kathy Wagner, Vice-president Dick Daggett, Secretary Evie Spartz, Treasurer Phyllis lndermuehle. GERMAN CLUB Die Deutsche Gesellschaft or German Club, under the guidance of Miss Podruch, enjoyed an active and successful year. The officers were Herr Cy Richter, president: Herr jerry Krueger, vice-president: and Fraulein Joan Kircher, secretary-treasurer. lnteresting club meetings this year included German films, slides. and a lecture by Mrs. Trapp, a German war bride, who told about high school students in Germany. The club members worked industriously selling concessions at basketball games. SPANISH CLUB El Camino Real, the Spanish Club, under the direction of Miss Bornfleth spent a very enjoyable year studying the customs and language of our South American neighbors. Everyone looked forward to the school contests. wondering who would represent West Bend in the league contest. joel Hetland represented the school in original oratory: Phyllis lndermuehle and Marilyn Moeller took part in the extemporaneous speaking, and Dave Grogan and Eugene Sawyer gave their four minute memorized speeches. ln the extemporaneous reading contest, Ann Lauson and Carolyn Schloemer were West Bend's winners, while Joan Kircher and Darlyne DeTuncq took part in humorous declamation and Clara Mae Miller and Doris Ruhnke represented West Bend in serious declamation. On March 26 these students went to Waupun, where the league and Little Ten contests were held, Seven of the students received A ratings and were eligible to take part in the district contest at Port Washington. Ar the Little Ten contest Phyllis and Marilyn took first and second place respectively in extemporaneous speaking and Joel took second place in original oration. On April 9, the National Forensic League Contest was held in Milwaukee. Ann Lauson, a sophomore. did a fine job for West Bend by winning second place in extemporaneous reading. Of the students who went to the district contest. Phyllis, Marilyn, Ann and Joel received A's and took part in the state contest, held in Madison on April 23. At Madison Joel and Phyllis earned A ratings, while Marilyn and Ann received B ratings. West Bend High was well represented by the forensic squad this year, and is indeed proud of the record the students made. Everyone was interested in winning a prize at the school contest. The B. C. Ziegler Forensic Fund pro- vided sl 00 for awards for these winners. Cash awards are given to extemporaneous speakers, while book awards of the students' own choosing are given for the other prizes. This year the forensic squad took part in the National Forensic League Contest, The Little Ten, the League, the District, and the State Contests. This year the forensic department was under the direction of Mr. Paul Peterson and Miss Ann Snyder. Their untiring efforts directed toward producing our squad of splendid speakers bore fruit in the form of the awards won by the school's representatives. Page thirty four' Masters of Music Remember every morning during the first hour how we as members of classes on the second and third floors would tap our pencils on the desks in time to a march the band was playing? ln our minds we could see eighty members with bright red uniforms tuning their shiny instruments and preparing for a concert. But let's peek inside room 3l l and see why our band is so popular with the surrounding communities and why it received an A rating in the district contest last year. Everyone is invited to join the West Bend High School Band, and no one is expected to buy the instru- ments he plays. Yet many of the members have pur- chased the lower-priced instruments. Now lend an ear, folks, for here is the director's secret of an excellent band. Every member is given at least one free lesson a week, thereby discovering the weak points of the musician and enabling him to correct mistakes more readily. uAll work and no play makes Jack a dull boyn is a proverb that has been put into practice in the band. Last summer our able musicians gave a concert at the Old Soldiers' Home at King, Wisconsin. After the concert they took an excursion around the chain lakes and went swimming. The lVlardi Gras of Chicago was also host to the band, and later the members attended the Chicago Railroad Fair. ln March the band sponsored a concert by the National Champions from lllinois, the Joliet Township Band. Terrific is a fitting word for the West Bend High School Band and members deserve much praise. To the director, Harold lVl. Shlimovitz goes the credit for the fine record the band has achieved. His train- ing program has made the band one of the best. But the real climax of the year occurred at the spring concert when the band was privileged to have as its guest conductor Clair Omar lVlusser, the world's fore- most marimba soloist. -iii appy Harmony 1X Top --- L. This year the high school chorus was under the capable direction of Samuel Cupery. The re- hearsals were held during the fifth hour every clay. with the boys' glee club meeting on Tues- days and girls' glee club on Thursdays. The chorus presented two performances of its annual Christmas concert. The first was given in the gym for the students and teachers, the second at the lVlcl..ane School for the general public. Several trips were taken by chorus members, who heard selections presented by college choral organizations. A new ensemble, the Madrigal Singers, was organized by Mr. Cupery. This group of sixteen students met every Wednesday night for practice and performed frequently throughout the year. Early in March many students began prep- arations for the solo and ensemble contest. which was held on April 30 at Waupun. West Bend was well represented at this contest, the ratings being high in every case. On May 7th the entire chorus went to Waupun to talce part in the tourn- ament. Our director, Mr. Samuel Cupery, attended college at Oshkosh State Teachers and came to Nvest Bend after directing civic and church choirs at Friesland, Wisconsin. l-le has done a splendid job of improving the chorus and creating a greater interest in choral music. We worked like busy beavers in our campaign, by making clever posters and wear- ing small bells to signify our support. jim won out over the sophomores' candidate, and we had our first taste of victory. ln our own class elections, we did just as well by electing Paul Schneiss president, Marvin Ramthun vice-president, and Don Kircher secretary and treasurer. Then in the fall of '46, we returned to school with lots of vim and vigor, really looking forward to a super-sophomore year. For our class officers we elected Phil Schleif as president, Jim Bell as vice- president and Elaine Bohn as secretary-treasurer. With all our campaign banners flying, we put our candidate, Dan Kuhn, into the vice-presidency seat of the Student Senate. Then, too, our sophomore representatives were taking over the B teams in sports and debate. The year passed before we knew it. Then, right around the corner were the semester exams, and with them came the end of a most wonderful sophomore year. ln our junior year we stepped into the social lime- light, for this was the year of our junior Prom. With our leaders Gerald Nlehlos, president, Jim Bell, vice- president and Don Kircher, secretary-treasurer, we succeeded in making our prom outstanding. The decorations were beautiful with silhouettes of men and HONOR ROLL Gloria Erhardt Lucille Falk Delores Foy Marian Gosse Margie Groh Marlene Hartleb Janet Hupfer Phyllis Indermuehle Joan Kircher .........Ej....... At the Pre-prom, Kath- leen Wagner was revealed by King Gerald Mehlos as the prom queen, and what a beautiful queen she made. Their royal court included: Elaine Bohn, Carol Lies- ener, Clara Mae Miller, Margie Groh, Doris Ruhnke, Betty Weiland, and Pearl Miller. Not only did we climb the ladder socially, but we also did well in athletics and politics. ln sports our boys made the A teams and Phyllis lndermuehle was elected to the Student Senate as secretary-treasurer. During our last year in high school, we were deter- mined to make it our best. Our first step in this direc- tion was to elect such capable officers as President Joel Hetland, Vice-president Bob Reichert, and Secre- tary-treasurer Carol Liesener. After an all-out cam- paign for the Student Senate, we voted Dan Kuhn president and Phyllis lndermuehle secretary-treasurer. Then, too, in sports and debate, our teams were bring- ing home victory after victory. But, small wonder, because the members of our class were indeed active in these fields. Then, lo and behold, soon our greatest venture began, our senior class play, The lVlan Who Came To Dinner. What a successl With the funds from the play and the prom, two of the most success- ful functions of the senior class, we left behind a class memorial as a token of appreciation for the oppor- tunities that have been ours. Commencement! We marched, diplomas in hand, feeling justly proud of our four years at West Bend High School. ..........., Q 4 Bob Reichert, vice-president takes President Joel Hetland's measurements for a graduation gown while Carol Liesener, secretary-treasurer, carefully , records the results.
