We A G L REACHED It seems only a short time ago that we entered high school and now we are graduating Four grand and glorious years have sped by filled with work and fun hopes and ideals for tomorrow When entering high school in September 1944 our class had all the characteristics of freshmen We were green and confused But not too green to elect good class officers They were president Richard Larson vice president Lou Ann Schloemer and secretary treasurer Pat Kaempfer Our candidate for vice president of the Student Council Tom Thorson was elected after vigor ous campaigning September 1945 found us no longer new to the school routine now we were sophomores Our class officers this year were president Darwin juech vice president George Sherman and secretary treasurer Fred Eickman As sophomores we were active in sports some of our boys being on the football team We were also active in clubs and on the Clipper staff Two of our class Lou Ann Schloemer and Richard Larson were instrumental in bringing the debate championship of the Little Ten back to West Bend High We were very proud of our c ass September 1946 We were upperclassmen now with president Darwin Iuech vice president ohn Falter and secretary treasurer Ken Pauer to guide us Again Lou Ann and Richard helped bring the debate championship home and also reached second place in the National Forensic League and state contests oanne Dewey won first place in the American Legion Essay Contest The girls elected to attend Badger Girls State were oanne Dewey Ann Kreckhafer Iris Riley Dorothy Gumm Pat Kaempfer Mary Lhotka Betty Anderson and Lou Ann Schloemer We were more active in sports this year Many junior boys were on the football team and active in baseball basketball track and nearly every other sport And we can t forget the girls in G A A and the cheerleaders junior fioats placed in the homecoming parade and we had a junior for queen Evelyn Kudek chose a ring called the Royal Crown and wore it proud- ly. The biggest event of the entire year was of course the prom. We chose Black Magic as the theme. Reign- ing over the prom were King Darwin uech and ueen Arlette Mehlos who together with the court made the affair a beautiful and never-to-be-forgotten night. The one event saddening our junior year was the death of Roger Wiedmeyer who died during the sum- mer of his junior year. Everyone who knew him misses rm. Then came September 1947 and there was no class above us now. A year busy with pictures, the Bend the class play, and commencement sped us along. After a lot of hard work, our class play, Best Foot Forward Suv' john Falter President ftopj Arlette Mehlos Secretary treasurer Vernon Schwichtenberg Vice president Senior Honor Roll Anderson Betty Bauer Clifford Bolhalter June Callres Quinton Dewey Joanne Falter ohn onas Marilyn Koch Jacqueline Iarson Richard Martin Laverne Phrlippi Edward Ruefenacht Ronald Schloemer Lou Ann was successfully presented. This year we won the ofhce of president of the student senate electing jack Wen- inger to represent the seniors. Our class officers this year were president john Fal- ter' vice-president Vernon Schwichtenberg' secretary- treasurer Arlette Mehlos. Again we were active in sports clubs and forensics. Chosen as D.A.R. girl of West Bend High was Betty Anderson. In just a few days now we will be graduates and have only pleasant memories of our high school days. Some of us will be going to college, and some of us will not. Nevertheless, as each one of us receives his diploma, he will look forward to a happy life in a better tomorrow. We hear it many times throughout the day. The seventy-two piece band was under the direction of H. M. Shlimovitz, who has done much to improve it. The A band rehearsals were held the first period in the morning. In addition to this, every band member had one private lesson a week with Mr. Shlimovitz. Two new music clubs were added to the extra- curricular activities, the Reed Club and the Brass Club, meeting once every three weeks. The band has been in the spotlight many times during this year. No basketball or football game would have been complete without the aid of the band to put more spirit into the game. During the half at the football games, the band displayed many fine maneu- vers. Many members of the band have appeared before various service organizations, such as the Rotary, Womans Club, and church organizations. The band gave two concerts for the public, the Christmas concert and the mid-winter concert. The band and chorus joined to present a memorable Christmas concert on December Zlst. At the Mid-Winter concert, presented in the McLane School on March 7th, the guest conductor was Harold Bachman, who directed the second half of the program. Perhaps the biggest and most enjoyable event of the year was the annual music festival. West Bend acted as host for the two separate contests. The first held on April 5rd, included solos and ensembles, with the students making an excellent showing. The students who received first-star ratings and went to the state con- test on May 22nd were: soloists, George Schowalter and David Grogan, tubag Quinton Callies, clarinet, Walter Kratz, cornetg Tom Thorson and Bill Cooley, tromboneg ensembles: Nancy Ra- maker and Joyce Bauer, clarinet duetg Walter Kratz, David God- dard and Harvey Krueger, Cornet trio, Walter Kratz, David Goddard, Bill Cooley and James Perrin, brass quartet. The second part of the festival, the band and chorus contest, was held on May Sth. Again the music students came through with honors. l fwcoh- ymffufv- 'f'4N' ,fwwx Us w,..L.9-A. .,a'-fb-+ rf . Meinberg, and Bernadette Hahn. Pupils singing under Miss Myrna Steffens direction in the chorus this year participated in a number of concerts. The chorus gave three performances of the Christmas concert. The first one was given for the children of the McLane School, the second for the general public, and the third for the high school pupils and teachers. Christmas carols were sung by the entire chorus for the entertainment of the patients at St. Josephs Hospital. ln March all practices were devoted to the coming Spring Festival for solos and ensembles. ln the festival, on April 5rd, the West Bend music department students ranked high. The festival was climaxed by a concert in the McLane School gym before a packed house. On April 22nd, a spring concert pre- sented songs by well-known Wisconsin composers. This con- cert was one of a different type. It followed the plan that many of the college choruses use. The curtain opened to present the entire chorus dressed in their maroon robes. This section presented religious music which was followed by a group of songs sung by the boys' glee club. During this time the girls were very hastily donning gay formals which they wore while singing the next section of the program. After the girls' glee club had finished, solos took over a part of the program. Each solo was written by a Wisconsin composer. The last section was presented by the entire chorus. The money raised by the concert was used to buy new music folders for the chorus. May 8th brought the grandest array of band and choruses ever seen in West Bend. Thirty bands and thirty-two choruses from all over the state participated in this tournament. The bands paraded in review before the judges. Nearly 3,000 students participated. The chorus did more than give concerts or participate in tournaments, for trips were also taken to hear other choruses: Mission House College Choir, Plymouthg the Messiah Choir in Milwaukee: and the Lawrence College Choir of Appleton. These trips were of great value to all chorus members. Each trip was enjoyed by all members. That the entire school year was more interesting because of the many activities in which the chorus participated is a tribute to Miss Stefferrs planning. Y ' LADIES A D GE TLE E OE THE PRESS Last fall with the theme Cooperation between school and community, well in mind, the Bend advisor, Mr. Baxter, with co-editors Lou Ann Schloemer and Dick Larson and a co- operative staff began work on the 1948 Bend. The first problem to be met was the high cost of production due to economic conditions. Bend costs had risen considerably. Advertising Manager Darwin juech, Business Manager George Schowalter and a large staff of volunteer helpers inaua gurated a sponsorship drive which culminated in the attain- ment of a Sl,0O0 goal. By the end of the first semester over 545 subscriptions had been sold and production began. The editors, along with art editor Arlette Mehlos and a host of s ecial writers be an to turn out co , mount ictures, , . produce art work, and check lists in preparing a dummy copy. This year the staff decided to change from the customary red and white color to a new green, emphasis was put on pic- tures instead of copy, and an attempt was made to give greater coverage to school activities. In keeping with the theme, the Bend was dedicated to West Bend and its Neighbors. The staff wanted to give recognition to the cooperation between the community and school. Tribute was also paid to Miss Ella Kuehlthau and Mr. D. -I. Kenny for their long years of service to the school. Finally the day arrived that all had waited for. The Bends were finished, and we'd received them from the printer. An- other year's work had been successfully completed. The 1947--48 issues of the Campus Clipper were registered with the National Scholastic Publications Association which rated the Clipper as a first class publication. Part of the success of the school paper is due to the splendid leadership of the editors of the staff: Arlyn Gauger as editor-in-chief, Laverne Martin as news editor, joan Kircher as feature editor, Arlette Mehlos as art editor and Bill Cooley as sports editor, all under the guidance of the advisor, Miss Mary Catherine O'Connell. The rest of the staff carried on the Clipper tradition that each issue published would be the best. The rest of the success can be accredited to the fine response the student body displayed when subscription goals were exceeded. Especially this year has the staff tried many ways to improve the paper. Despite the rise in cost of paper, the subscription price remained the same. Although more work was required of the entire staff, the paper has come out more frequently, The staff has published the paper every two weeks instead of every three weeks. 028 Campus Clipper editors Bill Cooley. C RTAI TI E The lights dim, the curtain parts, the play is ready to begin. The setting is the boys' dormitory at Winstmcki Prep School. The time is the night of the annual prom. He dashes toward the door, but bumps into a stranger who wastes no time in having it made known that he is an old grad, football is on the downgrade since he left, and Winsocki boys get smaller every year. The old grad leaves in search of Doc Reeber. Dutch and Hunk prepare to leave the room, but are too late, for Doc Reeber enters followed by Miss Smith. the chaperone, Minerva, Ethel, Miss Delaware Water Gap, and the Blind Date. As soon as Miss Smith leaves, the boys get the situation well in hand. After the girls have left, Bud Hooper enters the room, as though he has a great problem on his mind. He confides in his two roommates that he has asked two girls to the prom, his regular girl and a movie star. Much to their sur- prise, the movie star accepts the offer. Dutch immediately announces that he has a solution to the problem: the movie star is to go as Buds real date, Helen Schlessinger. All goes well until Helen arrives, one of the boys has told her that Bud has recovered. Things get progressively worse, especially after the ar- rival of Gale Joy and her manager, .lack Haggerty.
