J. 8 I , K . . . . in Lookung back suxty years we honor the men and women who attended that school meetung of March 5 l887 and who unanumously voted to establush a hugh school un our cuty Theur presence of mund as well as theur foresughtedness at the tume was destuned to exert a great upluftung unfluence on our communuty As far back as l872 a hugh school department was establushed un West Bend and a two story bruck addu tuon to the old north school house was buult Thus became a free hugh school un I887 The town gave the state the rught to unspect and supervuse un return for whuch the school receuved a small annual grant of money lt was un thus buuldung on the northeast corner of Elm Street and Eughth Avenue that the hfty three students who were enrolled un West Bend Hugh School durung uts furst year of exustence attended classes The responsubuluty of teachung these fufty three students rest ed enturely wuth two teachers One of these two was the pruncupal M A Buckley who resugned after one year un thus posutuon ln l888 eught students emerged from the courthouse wuth duplomas un theur possessuon Of those eught Mrs Henruetta Deucher and Muss Clara jones a resudent of West Bend are the only known luvung members Mr Buckley was succeeded by D T Keeley who was pruncupal for four years When un l889 the enroll ment already crowded the capacuty of the orugunal school buuldung the cutuzens of the town found ut necessary to construct a new buuldung Thus buuldung was furst put unto use un l890, and today serves as Holy Angels Parochual School Contunued growth made ut necessary un I900 to expand agaun Therefore, the orugunal hugh school buuldung was torn down, and a r'ew buuldung whuch now serves as the publuc lubrary was buult to accommodate both the hugh school and grades 6, 7, and 8 Though there were no notable changes un the cur ruculum of the school untul l905, the pruncupalshup changed hands three tumes durung thus peruod Mr L E. Amudon, who succeeded Mr D T Keeley, was pruncupal untul l897 when he resugned, and the offuce was agaun taken over by Mr Keeley From l902 to l905 Mr C H Duetz was pruncupal, and followung hum was a man who held the posutuon longer than all the others combuned Mr D E. lVlcl..ane, after whom the local graded school us named, dud much to make our hugh school an asset to the communuty It us unterestung to note the many new courses whuch were added to the curruculum whule Mr McLane was pruncupal Durung hus furst year un thus posutuon a greatly needed laboratory was added Page sux W W Stnfy to the school ln l909 the hugh school found utself employung a total of fuve teachers The year l9ll marked the untroductuon of manual traunung to the curruculum whule the followung year German was made a four year course ln l9l3 domestuc scuence was added and four years later un l9I 7 wuth Muss Cer trude Forrester as teacher West Bend students were able to profut by learnung shorthand and typung un the newly organuzed commercual department At a crowded school meetung un March 1924 the questuon of constructung a new school was voted down 409 253 ln August of the same year after several mus conceptuons had been cleared up the people changed theur munds and voted for the establushment of the school which us beung used today Thus buuldung was erected un 1925 At that tume the school board unanu mously voted to name the beautuful hugh school athletuc fueld Harvey Bruhy Memorual Fueld un honor of a local boy who dued un the servuce of hus county World War l ln l928 the school board accepted Carl Pucks offer to award trophues to the outstandung athletes each year These annual awards are Stull hughly regarded lt wasnt untul I935 that an art course was added to the already long lust of electuves un West Bend Hugh The addutuon to the hugh school un I939 whuch unclud ed quarters for vocatuonal educatuon untul such tume as a vocatuonal school was constructed met one of the great needs of the communuty Durung World War II, the vocatuonal school assusted un the war effort by traunung young men un mechanucal skulls for the local factorues When a school superuntendency was establushed un West Bend un l94l, lVlr lVlcl..ane was appounted super untendent and Mr Nl G Batho became pruncupal A year later, however, when Mr lVlcl.,ane dued, Mr Batho was made superuntendent, and the pruncupalshup was guven to Mr N E Colby who holds that posutuon today The modern buuldungs, equupment, and spacuous grounds of our publuc school system are valued at over S825,000 00 As we survey condutuons wuthun our school, we fund that once agaun the enrollment us begunnung to outgrow the capacuty of the school Thus, agaun our school plans for expansuon The plans for the future unclude a shop addutuon for both metal and wood work as well as cement bleachers for the football fueld Many of West Bend's most promunent cutuzens can be numbered among the more than twenty fuve hundred persons who have graduated from our hugh school sunce that furst class of suxty years ago
