public performances of the band. Since a regular school letter cannot be given to band members, those members who had earned a specified number of points by the end of the year were entitled to a special band letter. For the past several years the band members have been waiting for the lifting of wartime restrictions so that their new uniforms could be made. This year the waiting came to an end. Two weeks before the tournament, the new red and white uniforms arrived. Held at Beaver Dam this year, the tournament was the scene of the greatest number of entries of solos and ensembles that West Bend has had for many years. To prepare these musicians for the con- test, lVlr. Shlimovitz had them play before many of West Bend's civic clubs. When the tournament was over, one might well have said it was West Bendls day, for our band soloists and ensembles won fifteen firsts ln addition to this the band itself received a first rn the concert numbers rt played Not only were they given a first m marching but they tred with one other school as the outstanding marching band of the event and for this received a beautiful trophy The chorus too held its own winning five frrsts rn solo and ensemble work and recervrng a first rn its concert pieces A first was also given to the Girls Glee Club The hurry and scurry of tournament prepara tions was not only lrmrted to the band members Under the expert guidance of Mrss Austin vocal work too became of increased importance this year The great number of students who represented West Bend at the tournament verrfres this fact The con test found not only a chorus from West Bend but a great number of soloists duets and other groups of singers These people also provided entertainment at many club meetings rn the community One of the brg events of the year for the band was the lVl1d Winter Concert held at the lVlcLane School on February 23 l947 This concert was highlighted rn two ways lVlrss lVlary Lhotl-ta our school s talented young soprano favored the audi ence with several vocal selections accompanied by the band At the opening of the second half of the program lVlr Shlrmovrtz turned the baton over to lVlr Joe Berryman one of the foremost percussion experts rn the country This Sunday afternoon pro gram was highly praised by all who heard rt The performance of the individual members of the band and the efforts of their director gave our hrgh school a fine musical organization Accornprnred bx the h nd Mary Lhotka sings for the Winter Concert H1311 guest CODdl1ClOI NIISS ALSTIN S FPESHNIAN GIPLS GLLE CLLB Top Prt Wolf Nlaxrs Jaeger Puth Nlrchels Yrrgrnra Hassnrer Bettx Fox Puth Vhskerchen Audxex Troedel Second An'r Barndt Dolores Frcrtrg Eleanor Dxck Cor lrss Dekker Xrrgrnra Haack P ith Schneider Third Lxelyn Sparta Ruth Krtjcr Joyce Bruer Helen Hau'-mann Adeline Wolf Page tu entx fue . , . . . . . . , . ., Y ' . , .
