The Bend's adviser, Mr. Baxter, with the aid of other teachers selects the editors, writers, and artists, and the work is under way, The staff spends much time with the engraver in selecting a theme and laying out the plan for the book. Many details must be con- sidered before the copy is ready to be printed. Pic- tures must be taken and identified: articles must be written, proofread, cut down and typedg drawings must be accurate, and dimensions must be perfected. Taking subscriptions and obtaining sponsorships are the two methods of financing the book The two co editors for the l947 Bend were Dolores Rainey and Richard l-letland who were selected for their previous experience and writing ability To Dan Schowalter went the duties of business manager He secured a subscription list of 731 copies The important work of obtaining sponsorships was handled by Vir ginia Dowty and her staff - - - F. Bacon CAMPUS CLIPPER Our school paper, the Campus Clipper, hit a new high this year with a subscription list of 275. Students and friends of the school alike looked forward to the day Clippers came out. The staff succeeded in putting out about I2 issues, which presented the events of the school year and a wide variety of colorful features. Capably heading the staff were Lois Kuhn as editor-in- chief, Margaret Kenny as news editor, and ,lane Rosen- heimer as feature editor. Neal Schleif handled the sports for most of the year. The season began with de- bating in which both A and B squads carried West Bend through with flying colors. ln the 36 debates in which the members of our B team, Marilyn Moeller, Eugene Sawyer, joel Hetland, Ronald Ruefenacht and Phyllis lndermuehle, contested, I2 were won and 24 were lost. The record of the A team is also one of which we can be proud inasmuch as Dick Hetland, Dick Larson, Lou Ann Schloemer, and jackie Bohn, the team mem- bers, engaged in 56 debates throughout the season and won 44 of them. This showing included winning the Little Ten Debate Tournament for the third consecutive year. After winning at district and sectional tourna- ments. West Bend brought home second place from the state finals. ln addition to these tournaments. the debate team, in the state contest held by the National Forensic League, took second place. ln February forensics began. ln the intra-school con- tests, I23 students took part. Page twenty-nine On Tuesday, April l5, with only standing room remain- ing in the McLane School Gym, the senior class pre- sented one of the most memorable events of the year, their class play. With committees still hard at work and the cast all set to go, the curtains opened and the aud- ience was shown the following story of Junior Miss. Fearing that her father, Harry Graves, had fallen in love with Ellen Curtis, the boss' daughter and secretary, Judy Graves, fourteen, throws the household into a tur- moil in an attempt to keep the family from breaking up. Mrs. Graves' brother, Willis Reynolds, after an ab- sence of ten years, comes to stay with the Graves family. Judy, trying to keep the family together and consider- ing herself a court of human relations, manages to intro- duce her Uncle Willis to Ellen Curtis. The two fall in love and get married. After Judy tells B. Curtis, her father's boss, about Uncle Willis, B. is given the im- pression that Reynolds is a disbarred jailbird. B, finds his daughter married to Willis Rey- nolds, he is furious and fires Harry. ln the midst of the excitement, the ever-charming l..ois enters with three of her boy friends who are promptly dismissed by her father. The third act opens with Mr, Graves sadly bringing his personal effects home from the office. Mrs. Graves and Judy try to comfort him but to no avail. Futfy Adams, who had been Judy's erstwhile companion and chief adviser during the play, again turns up to help Judy think of some way to get Pop his job back. When B, hears that Haskell Cummings is coming to the Graves' home, he thinks that Harry is trying to steal Mr. Cummings, Senior from his law firm and offers Harry his job again. As the plot unfolds, Haskell Cum- mings turns out to be Mr, Cummings, Junior, who was taking Judy to a dance. B., conscious of what has hap- pened, admits the joke is on him, and the curtain closes. ln addition to recognizing the fine work of all the committees, special recognition must be given Miss Catherine Miller for the outstanding casting and direct- ing of her first class play in West Bend. The game with Cedarburg was the first night game played on Bruhy Field. Everyone at school is very grateful to Mr. Carl Pick for his generosity in donating 85,000 to the new lighting system, one of the best in the state. Head coach Robert Caldwell and assistant jack Runkel, both veterans of World War Il, returned to the battles of the gridiron to coach the squad to its best season in two years. The Benders initiated the lights in fine style by coming out the victors. Cedarburg 0, West Bend 8 The first game was fought against a strong Cedar- burg eleven, Neither team was able to score until the third quarter when Don Bauer delivered the pig-skin to the end zone. Then in the fourth quarter Cedarburg refused to punt out of its own end zone and was stopped by Krueger and Schwai. Waupun 7, West Bend 0 The following Friday the Red and White traveled to Waupun for its conference opener. ln the fourth quarter, Waupun's hard driving squad managed to push over the only touchdown and extra point of the game. Coaches Caldwell and Runho' Horicon 13, West Bend 24 Next the Red and White played host to Horicon. The fire works started early in the game when Bob Weiss took a pass from Reid Horle for the first six points. Early in the second quarter West Bend scored again on a long pass from Bernard Wagner to Stanley Zell. Then the high-spirited Horicon team connected on a pass to make the score I2 to 6. ln the closing seconds of the Hrst half, Horicon intercepted a pass and ran for another counter to go out in front I3 to IZ, ln the second half after the pig-skin exchanged hands several times, the Red and White put on a drive that resulted in a touchdown by Reid Horle. Beaver Dam 27, West Bend 0 The Red and White next invaded the Beaver Dam home held only to be turned back with its second con- ference loss. Hartford 21, West Bend 7 For the fifth tilt the Red and White traveled to Hartford to tangle with their traditional rivals. From the starting gun West Bend put on a touchdown drive to tally six points when Wagner crossed the goal on an off tackle. Bob Weiss added the extra point. No more touchdowns were made until Hartford went over on a line plunge and added the extra point. Hartford scored again on a surprise punt return. The extra point was good. Columbus 0, West Bend 19 The Red and VVhite snatched its second conference win by defeating the Columbus Cardinals. The first score of the game was made on a pass from Reid l-lorle to Bob Weiss in the second quarter. Both teams played good ball: however, West Bend got the best of the Cardinals in the fourth quarter when l-lorle and Weninger made touchdowns. Ripon 0, West Bend 6 fldomecomingl The enthusiasm of a clever pep-meeting, a parade and a huge bonfire instilled so much spirit in the team that Ripon was not able to meet it. After the ball had changed directions time and again, the first half ended scoreless. ln the third quar- ter, after a few blows at the line, jack Weninger crashed over the goal for six points. The try for an extra point failed. Then came the crucial moment. The crowd was in suspense as Ripon carried the pigskin to the four yard line. West Bend with its back to the wall held them from scoring as they reached the one foot line. This was the most beautiful defensive play the Red and White squad displayed. The ball was carried out of danger, and as the final gun went off, West Bend won its third conference game 6 to 0. Port Washington 40, West Bend 0 The Red and White squad wound up the season on a very wet Port field. It was anybody's ball game until the end of the second quarter when Port con- nected on two passes for two touchdowns and one extra point. Throughout the game Port chose to use only fourteen players as West Bend looking ahead used all of its players. The team split the season by winning four games and losing four. lr won three conference tilts and lost three, thus capturing a fifth-place standing in the conference. This is the nucleus that made up the 46 football squad, our second post-war eleven. ln the backfield, speed was built around Bauer, l-lorle, and Germang power around fullback ,lack Wen- inger: and blocking by Weiss, Schleif, and Wagner. Wagner and German carried out the passing assign- ments while Horle and Weiss were the pass-snatching backs. Weninger sparked line-plunging for the squad. ln the line the ends were Buettner, Zell, and Sauer. Buettner was the key defensive end while Zell and Sauer worked nicely on both. The tackles were Gonring, Krueger, and Bauer. C-onring was the mainstay of the line working his 240 pounds to full advantage. Krueger was especially good on defensive. Bauer was a capable reserve. lVlany of the plays through the tackles were sure of yardage. Guard positions were filled by Schmidt, Averill and Lutz. Schmidt did a he-man job both on offense and defense. Averill and Benedict played nicely on offense while Lutz was a key defensive guard. Schwichtenberg filled the center position. l-le did a good job of punting and backing up the line. At the end of the season Delbert Schmidt and Bob Weiss were elected honorary captains of the H46 team. VVening:c-i' bucks the line as Gunning, VVagnei-, and Averill wtird off tzicklm-is, The opposition is ht-ld frist by VVeningm' :ind Benedict. PITCHING PRACTICE Vernon Schwichtenberg, Bernard Wagner, Roy Sauer, Don Lutz, Coach Kuss. With a considerable amount of experienced ma- terial from the preceding season, Coach Bucci moulded a l946 baseball team which played an eight-game season, winning three of the games. The team was organized well but lacked hitting power. Although the number of wins chalked up was not too impressive, the team always seemed to make a good showing. ln fact, if the team had won only a few of the games that were lost by a very small margin, it would have turned in quite a successful record for the season. ln the opening game the Red and White challced a 3 to 2 win over Jefferson High. To open the conference play, West Bend met the batmen of Mayville in a double header. After losing a lopsided first game 8 to 0, West Bend turned around and upset them 4 to 2 in the second game. ln the next conference double header, West Bend was defeated in a close 3 to 0 first game and was downed again in the second game I to 0 in a very close contest. Then in a non-conference game the Red and White team gave the ball a ride and sent Port Washington home with a defeat by chalking up a 6 to 3 victory. The last game of the season was a conference double header with Hartford. ln the first game the Orioles caught the Benders off guard and drove home eleven runs to win II to 0. ln the second game the Red and White held Hartford to 4 runs, while scoring one run for themselves.
