As we sfepped off 'rhe plane whom should we see buf Dufch Jansen and Dan Merriam! Why, fhey were some of our classmafes from I94O, and here fen years Iafer we see fhem. They were as much surprised fo see us as we were fo see fhem. We found ouf fhaf fhey were aeronaufical engineers. Affer falking for awhile, fhey showed us around fhe field. Here we saw some more of our classmafes from l940. Jusf before we sef ouf fo see fhe field, a plane came in. Dan said fhaf fhere were several famous people on if, so we sfayed fo see fhem. As fhey sfepped off fhe plane, who should fhey be buf Mariorie Nielsen, fhe famous opera singer, and Kennefh Fassbinder, fhe worId's fasfesf swimmer. Before fhey sfepped off 'rhe plane, up rushed a reporfer and 'ro our surprise if was Aubrey Herman. Marjorie said she had a surprise for us. The pilof of fheir plane was Tom Sonnenberg, and fhe hosfess, Doris Vander-walker. We decided fo have dinner fogefher: and as we were walking down fhe sfreef, we saw 'rwo signs. One read, James Froede and Roberf Marfh--Lawyers. The ofher RaIph Rudolph--Underfakerf' As we knew all fhree of fhem, we wenf up fo see fhem. Because fhey were very busy. we didn'f sfay long. Affer dinner we wenf fo fhe Green Bay Packers-Tigers ball game. We knew several of fhe players, such as, Gordon Hack- barfh, Donald Glander, fhe sfar pifcher, and James Tangney. If was a very excifing game. Of course 'rhe Packers won. Affer fhe game we saw Michael Krafzer and Harrief Ross. They were run- ning fhe DaiIy Bender. Since fhere was a large crowd, we couIdn'f gef fo falk 'ro fhem. Affer fhe game we couIdn'f fhink of anyfhing To do, so I sug- gesfed fhaf we visif fhe hospifal as I was inferesfed in nursing. In fhis famous hospifal we mef some more of our l94O classmafes. Firsf, we were greefed by Lorraine Berend, head nurse, who showed us around 'rhe hospifal. In fhe operafing room fhere was an opera- 'rion being performed by Docfor Richard Rainey, and fhe nurses assisfing him were Margaref Gumm and Donna Jeanne Schowalfer. Thaf evening we wenf fo a dance af fhe famous Congo Club fo hear John Gerner, swing piano player, and Joe German, frumpef player. There we wafched fhe famous Genevieve Kohl and Bob Cooke dancing feam. We also had a chance fo see some more of our old classmafes, Jack Monday and Phil Salfer, bofh famous chemisfsq Joan Flaherfy, George Pefe, and Lyman Unruh, com- mercial arfisfs: Jack Yahr, science feacherg and Bob Kleinhans, foresf ranger from Yellowsfone Park. We wenf fo bed fhaf nighf wifh a feeling fhaf we were living in I94O insfead of I958. FRESHMEN IN THE WORLD OF SPORTS Ifems from a Dusf Pan of I943 Back in I94O fhe freshman class had whaf one would call a bumper crop of afhlefes. Now in I943 fhey are really creafing a sensafion. The various exTra-curricular acTiviTies have been well represenT- ed by second year sTudenTs. A goodly number oT sophomores are members oT The band and orchesTra, ready To Take The reins when This year's graduaTing class leaves us. The glee clubs also boasT oT many Two-year olds. AlThough aThleTic honors are noT usually dealT ouT To sopho- mores, several represenTaTives have become heroes in diTTerenT sporTs. Leroy Weinand, beTTer known as Buddy, disTinguished him- selT in his Treshman year by winning a WB in Tennis. This year Two second-year sTudenTs have been awarded leTTers Tor ouTsTanding parTicipaTion in TooTball. These Two sTars, Donald Heid and Francis Murphy, were a parT oT The TTghTing spiriT ThaT helped us win our Homecoming game. AlThough he came To us Trom anoTher ciTy aT The beginning oT The year, AusTin Hancock has quickly Taken hold here and has be- come promising maTerial Tor a winning baskeTball Team oT The TuTure. The spring sporTs Tind many second-year sTudenTs enjoying Themselves. On The road To success as a caTcher is Henry Gumm who wiTh oTher sophomores is a valuable addiTion To The baseball Team. Second year sTudenTs have won many poinTs Tor The Track Team and are bound To Tally many more as The burden oT winning The honors Tor WesT Bend High Talls To Them. The sophomores led The school in a real way whenever BeTTe Bingham and Audrey WolT, cheerleaders, appeared beTore The sTudenT body Tor iTs wholehearTed supporT oT The Teams. AlThough The girls' sporTs are limiTed To inTerclass compeTiTion, iT is signiTicanT To noTe ThaT The sophomores under CapTain BeTTy Lou Barens gave The 'uniors a mighTy duel Tor The championship in soccer. In volleyball The girls placed second under The leader- ship oT BeTTy KremsreiTer. BuT iT was in baskeTball ThaT The sopho- mores walked away wiTh all honors, noT being deTeaTed in a single TournamenT game. ATTer dominaTing The inTerclass play, They were challenged by a Team oT all-sTars chosen Trom all The oTher classes and again emerged vicTorious. AlThough The winners in The speech acTiviTies are graduaTing This year, The breach is rapidly being Tilled by promising young oraTors. OuTsTanding in Torensics among The sophomores is Ralph BenneTT, who wiTh The aid oT Florence Nielsen and Mirabel Hansen, made a Tine record in debaTe This year.
