Our library has grown irom mere wall shehves in lhe old high school building hold- ing a lew hundred books, lo a sunny, cheerlul room in a new building wilh shelves conlaining over 5,000 books lor relerence and pleasure reading, and lorly magazines and lour newspapers. Nexl year lee library will be increased one-lhird in size, perrnile ling addilional wall space. magazine slorage, workroom, and increased sealingcapacily. The high school library is a lraining piace as well as a place lor relerence work. All lreshmen receive lundamenlal library inslruclion in a shorl course designed lo leach lhem lhe use ol all library lacililies. Besides lhis lhere is a library apprenlice course given lo a hall dozen sludenls each year. The library assislanls lor lhis lerm were Gerlrude Albinger, Virginia Baslian, Marion Claus, Arlene Friedernan, Florence Friede- man, and Wilberl Landvaller. These sludenls help wilh all lhe phases ol library work and learn by doing. School creoil is given lor lhe course. A greal slep lorward in educalion was made when lhe worship ol one lexlbook ceased. and inslead ol using one book, lhe sludenl began lo galner his knowledge lrorn a number ol sources, This cnange meanl lhe ourchasing ol many books in all lines ol knowledge: a delinile place lc keep lhe books: a place lo consull lhese relerences under lhe compelenl direclion ol a leacher who had maiored in library science. Thus lhe school library and ils librarian became a necessily and gradually began lo perlorm innumerable lunclions.
