----- THE BEND ----- The Football and Basketball Seasons When the football season open'ed in 1932, forty-flve boys responded to Coach Runkel's call for candidates, nine of these gridders were players with previous experi- ence. After three weeks of severe condi- tioning and drill in fundamentals, the team traveled to Milwaukee for its opening game with Country Day High School, a heavy and experienced team. The final score was Country Day 33, West Bend 13. Next week found the boys fighting an uphill battle under the floodlights at Beaver Dam, only to lose by a score of 18 to 0. The flrst home game of the 1932-33 sea- son was played with the Berlin High School. It was a fight from start to Hnishg and though West Bend lost 19 to 7, the Berlin team knew that it had been in a football game. The following Saturday, with adverse weather conditions lending a hand, the W. B.'s were submerged in a sea of mud at Ripon to lose an exciting battle by a 19 to 12 tally. In the next game the Red and White was unable to stop a spirited Port Wash- ington team which was intent on winning its homecoming celebration. Spectacular runs by Port Washington gave them a 14 to 2 victory. In the homecoming game at Horicon Runkel's boys battled on even terms for three-quarters of the game, and then suc- cumbed to a slashing attack in the last quar- ter which gave Horicon a 20 to 6 victory. Mayville, Little Ten Champs for the past three -seasons, defeated us on 'our home grounds by a score of 33 to 7. The following week West Bend staged its homecoming and final game of the year. A spirited parade and a giant bonfire the night before provided the necessary en- thusiasm to defeat Oconomowoc by 20 to 0. This was the' last game for Capt. Billy Hae- big, Ed. Groth, Louis Ottmer, John Merri- am, Andy Gehl, Bob Kelley, Marvin Juech, and Joe Kincaideg and each one gave a good account of himself. When the end of the schedule in the Little Ten Conference had been reached, Horicon retained its grasp on the champ- ionship title by virtue of its victory over Mayville. It is to be noted that West Bend was the only team to cross Horicon's goal during the 1932-33 season. In looking over West Bend's tallies, we find that our boys scored in all but one game, which is a clear indication that they had the necessary punch to score. Next year most of the veteran team will be backg and with the hard experience gained, they should prove themselves to be top-notchers for the Little Ten Championship. The basketball season for 1933 opened with Coach Runkel's call for a squad on November twenty-first. Under the co-cap- taincy of I-Iaebig and Puestow more than forty men turned out to try for a place on the first and second teams. Quickly the first and second squads were cut down to twenty-one men. Of the nine players who made up the first squad only three had had previous experience, namely, Haebig, Pues- tow, and Warnkey. The rest of the squad consisted of Julian Mueller, Harold Berk- holtz, Louis Ottmer, Dan Pick, Ed Wiskir- chen, an d Reuben Ramel. Expecting a fast schedule ahead, the teams soon set- tled into a steady daily routine of drills and practice. The first game of the 1933 season was played at Port Washington with the Port crew the 20-10 victors. Two weeks later a much better game was played against the Alumni of West Bend when they gave the team a 25-23 defeat. On January ninth, the first conference game was opened on the big college floor at Ripon. This was anybody's game until a few minutes before the final gun when Ripon made the score read 17-15 in their favor. The second conference game found West Bend at Hartford in the most excit- ing contest of the season, when they handed their age-old rivals a 16-14 defeat. On January twentieth Waupun made up its one-point defeat of last year by hold- ing the Benders to an 18-16 score. The team took to the road for the next game and traveled to Columbus only to be handicapped by a small floor. Score: Colum- bus 26, West Bend 11. Berlin was the next stop. In a very well played game, with several odds going against them, the squad took the short count of a 22 to 15 score. ' The remainder of the games were played on the home floor. The flrst with Beaver Dam was another hard-fought, hard-luck game, with Beaver Dam pulling away with a one point victory. Score: Beaver Dam 13. West Bend 12. On February seventeenth Horicon bolstered up a last minute score to change a 22 to 22 tie into a 25-22 victory. Oconomowoc on February twenty-fourth avenged the defeat handed them in foot- ball by earning a 19 to 13 victory. In the last game of the season against Mayville, Haebig started out with flve field goals and a free throw, but still Mayville came out on the top with a final score of 23-17. The B team of this year, however, had Lady Luck with them in the tight places and won many of their games by deter-- mined one and two point victories. Their victory over all teams in the conference except Columbus gave them the Little Ten B Championship. Page Twenty-seven l
