THE BEND Summary of Class of '33 Extra! Extra! One hundred and twenty freshmen over-run the local high school. So rang the cry four years ago. After four years of strife, law and order was obtained in the class of '33 by the officers of Learn- ing and Experience. While freshmen, the class of '33, led by Harold Zahn, as president, William Haebig, vice-president, and Robert Kelley, secre- tary, entered into all activities open to them. They were bursting with such en- thusiasm that success was guaranteed them for the future. After the 1930-31 term, Billy Haebig and Harold Berkholtz started on the path to fame in basketball. It was now that Honore Walter also distinguished herself by placing among the last six girls to be eliminated from the declamatory contest. With Henry Dhein, she also took parts in two of the plays presented by the W. B. Troupers: In the Spring a Young Man's Fancy and Jazz and Minuet. A big event of the season, in the social world, was a Valentine dance sponsored by the class of 1931. The junior year, perhaps the most glamorous and thrilling of all four years, was headed by Andrew Gehl as president, who presided over-'the annual junior prom with Mary O'Meara as his queen, with royal mien hardly equaled by persons born of royal blood. The Washington bi-centennial silhouettes and other black and white de- signs completely transformed the gym into a modernistic maze. In the program of athletics, the class received due recognition: Joe Kincaide, John Merriam, Billy Haebig, and Louis Ott- mer received letters for their excellent work in football. Billy Haebig alone re- ceived a letter for basketball that year. Julian Mueller and Louis Ottmer also did excellent work. In the fleld of forensics Henry Dhein became an alternate on the debate squad. Emogene Gardner was one of the represen- tatives for the school in declamatory. Hon- ore Walter and Gloria Krejci were among the last to be eliminated in the declama- tory tryouts and in extemporaneous read- ing, respectively. Marcia Mahnke took part in When Love is Young, a play presented for Open House Night. In music, Robert Fuge, a newly ac- quired member of the class, assumed man- agership of the band with Elroy Schmidt as treasurer. Louis Ottmer, Andrew Gehl, and Joe Kincaide played prominent parts in the operetta, Pickles, that year. 1933! The class we have traced thus far returned for the last time. The enrollment was considerably decreased, but aside from this the spirit and zest were still there. Unfortunately not only in the flnancial world but also in the sporting world of the West Bend High School there was a crash. In spite of this, Billy Haebig, John Merri- am, Joe Kincaide, Edward Groth, and Louis Ottmer lent expert support to the football team. Julian Mueller, Billy Haebig, Louis Ottmer, and Harold Berkholtz exhibited their ability as excellent basketball players in spite of the losing streaks so prevalent during the season. In public speaking many seniors did outstanding work. Henry Dhein, our class president, became a member of the debate team. Declamatory found Marcia Mahnke and Honore Walter among those who placed highest honors in the school con- test. Gloria Krejci and Marcia Mahnke placed first and second respectively in the school contest while the latter placed sec- ond in the district contest. Harold Zahn was one of our two representatives in the district extemporaneous speaking contest and took fourth place in it. Two productions presented by the W. B. Troupers consisted largely of a cast of sen- iors. Senior participants in the Telegram were Pearl Rehm and Raymond Endlich. The seniors cast in t'Cabbages were Alice Hackbarth, Harold Braun, June Hausmann, Wilbert Schowalter, and Una Gruhle. Both plays were directed by Marcia Mahnke, president of the W. B. Troupers. In leaving the West Bend High School and entering upon a new life, this class will find the problem of living a difficult one. But we feel assured that a class pos- sessing the quality of perseverance to the extent shown by the class of '33 will send out into the world a group of individuals who will contribute their best.
