The cost of the book has been reduced more than one-half, yet every phase of school activity has been mentioned. Our accomplishment in presenting this complete chronicle of the high school ac- tivities has been made possible only through the sponsorship of the business men and patrons of the school, who have so gladly aided us. To them we dedicate the 1933 Bend, in full realization that without their assistance and encourage- ment our project would have been aban- doned for the first time in twenty-four years. D. E. O rchid and Gold Class Flower ,l,,llo clcl, S weet Pea Pain' 'l'wvnt y THE BEND Summary of Class of '33 Extra! Extra! One hundred and twenty freshmen over-run the local high school. So rang the cry four years ago. After four years of strife, law and order was obtained in the class of '33 by the officers of Learn- ing and Experience. While freshmen, the class of '33, led by Harold Zahn, as president, William Haebig, vice-president, and Robert Kelley, secre- tary, entered into all activities open to them. They were bursting with such en- thusiasm that success was guaranteed them for the future. After the 1930-31 term, Billy Haebig and Harold Berkholtz started on the path to fame in basketball. It was now that Honore Walter also distinguished herself by placing among the last six girls to be eliminated from the declamatory contest. With Henry Dhein, she also took parts in two of the plays presented by the W. B. Troupers: In the Spring a Young Man's Fancy and Jazz and Minuet. A big event of the season, in the social world, was a Valentine dance sponsored by the class of 1931. The junior year, perhaps the most glamorous and thrilling of all four years, was headed by Andrew Gehl as president, who presided over-'the annual junior prom with Mary O'Meara as his queen, with royal mien hardly equaled by persons born of royal blood. The Washington bi-centennial silhouettes and other black and white de- signs completely transformed the gym into a modernistic maze. In the program of athletics, the class received due recognition: Joe Kincaide, John Merriam, Billy Haebig, and Louis Ott- mer received letters for their excellent work in football. Billy Haebig alone re- ceived a letter for basketball that year. Julian Mueller and Louis Ottmer also did excellent work. In the fleld of forensics Henry Dhein became an alternate on the debate squad. Emogene Gardner was one of the represen- tatives for the school in declamatory. Hon- ore Walter and Gloria Krejci were among the last to be eliminated in the declama- tory tryouts and in extemporaneous read- ing, respectively. Marcia Mahnke took part in When Love is Young, a play presented for Open House Night. In music, Robert Fuge, a newly ac- quired member of the class, assumed man- agership of the band with Elroy Schmidt as treasurer. Louis Ottmer, Andrew Gehl, and Joe Kincaide played prominent parts in the operetta, Pickles, that year. 1933! The class we have traced thus far returned for the last time. The enrollment was considerably decreased, but aside from this the spirit and zest were still there. Unfortunately not only in the flnancial world but also in the sporting world of the West Bend High School there was a crash. In spite of this, Billy Haebig, John Merri- am, Joe Kincaide, Edward Groth, and Louis Ottmer lent expert support to the football team. Julian Mueller, Billy Haebig, Louis Ottmer, and Harold Berkholtz exhibited their ability as excellent basketball players in spite of the losing streaks so prevalent during the season. In public speaking many seniors did outstanding work. Henry Dhein, our class president, became a member of the debate team. Declamatory found Marcia Mahnke and Honore Walter among those who placed highest honors in the school con- test. Gloria Krejci and Marcia Mahnke placed first and second respectively in the school contest while the latter placed sec- ond in the district contest. Harold Zahn was one of our two representatives in the district extemporaneous speaking contest and took fourth place in it. Two productions presented by the W. B. Troupers consisted largely of a cast of sen- iors. Senior participants in the Telegram were Pearl Rehm and Raymond Endlich. The seniors cast in t'Cabbages were Alice Hackbarth, Harold Braun, June Hausmann, Wilbert Schowalter, and Una Gruhle. Both plays were directed by Marcia Mahnke, president of the W. B. Troupers. In leaving the West Bend High School and entering upon a new life, this class will find the problem of living a difficult one. But we feel assured that a class pos- sessing the quality of perseverance to the extent shown by the class of '33 will send out into the world a group of individuals who will contribute their best. While Coach Runkel's work has not produced con- ference football champions, it has brought home the 1933 Little Ten Track Championshipg and it has re- sulted in teams whose clean sports- manship has not only been shown on the gridiron but has also been com- mented upon when the games were over. Walter Schuelke has completed his fourth year as Assistant Coach at the West Bend High. He coaches the backfield in football, the B team in basketball, and serves as head coach of the baseball team. Coach Schuelke's ability to instill a fighting spirit into his teams and his persistence in hard preparatory work has made him invaluable to the school. After three weeks of severe condi- tioning and drill in fundamentals, the team traveled to Milwaukee for its opening game with Country Day High School, a heavy and experienced team. The final score was Country Day 33, West Bend 13. Next week found the boys fighting an uphill battle under the floodlights at Beaver Dam, only to lose by a score of 18 to 0. The flrst home game of the 1932-33 sea- son was played with the Berlin High School. It was a fight from start to Hnishg and though West Bend lost 19 to 7, the Berlin team knew that it had been in a football game. The following Saturday, with adverse weather conditions lending a hand, the W. B.'s were submerged in a sea of mud at Ripon to lose an exciting battle by a 19 to 12 tally. In the next game the Red and White was unable to stop a spirited Port Wash- ington team which was intent on winning its homecoming celebration. Spectacular runs by Port Washington gave them a 14 to 2 victory. In the homecoming game at Horicon Runkel's boys battled on even terms for three-quarters of the game, and then suc- cumbed to a slashing attack in the last quar- ter which gave Horicon a 20 to 6 victory. Mayville, Little Ten Champs for the past three -seasons, defeated us on 'our home grounds by a score of 33 to 7. The following week West Bend staged its homecoming and final game of the year. A spirited parade and a giant bonfire the night before provided the necessary en- thusiasm to defeat Oconomowoc by 20 to 0. This was the' last game for Capt. Billy Hae- big, Ed. Groth, Louis Ottmer, John Merri- am, Andy Gehl, Bob Kelley, Marvin Juech, and Joe Kincaideg and each one gave a good account of himself. When the end of the schedule in the Little Ten Conference had been reached, Horicon retained its grasp on the champ- ionship title by virtue of its victory over Mayville. It is to be noted that West Bend was the only team to cross Horicon's goal during the 1932-33 season. In looking over West Bend's tallies, we find that our boys scored in all but one game, which is a clear indication that they had the necessary punch to score. Next year most of the veteran team will be backg and with the hard experience gained, they should prove themselves to be top-notchers for the Little Ten Championship. The basketball season for 1933 opened with Coach Runkel's call for a squad on November twenty-first. Under the co-cap- taincy of I-Iaebig and Puestow more than forty men turned out to try for a place on the first and second teams. Quickly the first and second squads were cut down to twenty-one men. Of the nine players who made up the first squad only three had had previous experience, namely, Haebig, Pues- tow, and Warnkey. The rest of the squad consisted of Julian Mueller, Harold Berk- holtz, Louis Ottmer, Dan Pick, Ed Wiskir- chen, an d Reuben Ramel. Expecting a fast schedule ahead, the teams soon set- tled into a steady daily routine of drills and practice. The first game of the 1933 season was played at Port Washington with the Port crew the 20-10 victors. Two weeks later a much better game was played against the Alumni of West Bend when they gave the team a 25-23 defeat. On January ninth, the first conference game was opened on the big college floor at Ripon. This was anybody's game until a few minutes before the final gun when Ripon made the score read 17-15 in their favor. The second conference game found West Bend at Hartford in the most excit- ing contest of the season, when they handed their age-old rivals a 16-14 defeat. On January twentieth Waupun made up its one-point defeat of last year by hold- ing the Benders to an 18-16 score. The team took to the road for the next game and traveled to Columbus only to be handicapped by a small floor. Score: Colum- bus 26, West Bend 11. Berlin was the next stop. In a very well played game, with several odds going against them, the squad took the short count of a 22 to 15 score. ' The remainder of the games were played on the home floor. The flrst with Beaver Dam was another hard-fought, hard-luck game, with Beaver Dam pulling away with a one point victory. Score: Beaver Dam 13. West Bend 12. On February seventeenth Horicon bolstered up a last minute score to change a 22 to 22 tie into a 25-22 victory. Oconomowoc on February twenty-fourth avenged the defeat handed them in foot- ball by earning a 19 to 13 victory. In the last game of the season against Mayville, Haebig started out with flve field goals and a free throw, but still Mayville came out on the top with a final score of 23-17. The B team of this year, however, had Lady Luck with them in the tight places and won many of their games by deter-- mined one and two point victories. Their victory over all teams in the conference except Columbus gave them the Little Ten B Championship. Page Twenty-seven l THE BEND The Baseball Team of 1933 Third Row W. Gonrimr, A. Nr-ubauvr, M. Early in the year the following officers were selected: Mary O'Meara, President, Blanche Ritger, Vice-President, Delores Lodes, Treasurer, Jane Walter, Point Secretary, and Rita Klein, Secretary. The directing counsel consists of one manager from each major sport and tennis. During the past year they were Luella Schloemer, Volleyball, Mildred Kauper, Baseball, Ina Brainerd and Delores Lodes, Track, 'Mildred Weinand, Tennis. This short review gives the winners in our contests. The track meet in the spring of 1932 was won by the sophomores. The winner of the 1932 ten- nis tournament was Blanche Ritger, with Florence Wiskerchen as runner-up. The freshmen girls were victorious in the baseball tournament, and the juniors, for the second consecutive year, won the basketball championship. The volleyball teams this year were class teams instead of color teams. This season the number of points required to receive a UW. B. was cut from sixteen hundred to twelve hundred points. Page Twe nty-ni ne THE BEND The Carl Pick Trophies The Carl Pick Trophies, which have been renewed every year since 1928, were presented this year at the Rotary-Kiwanis banquet. It has been the custom to give five awards. The large cup is awarded to the best indi- vidual all-around athlete, and the four smaller cups go to the best individu- al athletes in each of the major sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track. This selection is made each year by a committee of two members of the Alumni Association, two members of the Student Activity Association, and two faculty members. Julian Mueller The Student Activity Association is an organization of the student body and the faculty which helps sponsor and finance all activities including athletics, public speaking, and debates. This year the payment for membern ship in the association was one dollar. This fee entitled each person to at- tend all activities of the school free of charge. Guidance Some innovations were added to the guidance programs this year. Under the leadership of Miss Forrester, work was started in social guidance, sportsmanship, written reports on the study of an occupa- tion, scholarship information, college en- trance requirements, leisure-time guidance, and privilege-day programs in charge of student officers. Work was continued in health, character, and personal guidance, and in occupational talks by business men and women. The co-operation of the service clubs was secured. The Kiwanis Club spon- sored the writing of occupational reports and the collection of material, for the school library. The Rotary Club sponsored visits to industries. The Business Women's Club gave material on vocations to the public library. These student chairmen were elected by their groups: Harold Zahn, Henry Dhein, Mary O'Meara, Alice Hackbarth, Burghardt Heindl, Alice Gonring, Bernice Naumann, Mark O'Meara, Richard Heidner, Marita Yahr, ,John Puestow, Betty Goeden, Edwin Pick, Myrtle Smith, Elaine Frauenheim.
