i } i ' % , V y I tT ♦ THE 1963 BLUE DEVIL WEST BADIN HIGH SCHOOL BADIN, NORTH CAROLINA FOREWORD The 1963 Blue Devil is a collection of your memories during the school year. As the years separate you from high school, you will treasure this book more and more. During the school year, West Badin High School has prospered as the result of the fine spirit and good will of the students. From imps to angels the students matured and also profited from their years at West Badin High School. Yearbook Staff Editor--Raymond Jackson, Ass ' t Editor--Pearl Washington, Business Manager-- Charlene Kirby, Advertising Manager—Brenda Cunningham, Circulation Man- ager--Margie Miller, Typists--Katie Dunlap, Lola Gramling, Jahala Wilson, Carl Apperwhite, Andrew Atkins. Advisors--Mr. R. S. Adams, Miss L. R. Martin. 2 icaiion Because he has become a part of West Badin High School through his years of service to the student body and because he possesses the qualities of an ideal teacher, we take pleasure to dedicate this 1963 annual to Mr. J. B. Davis. 3 PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE At the time of graduation, one question which usually permeates the thoughts of those completed their high school work is, What does the future hold for me? The same is true for those who find themselves leaving the ivy covered towers of a col¬ lege or the cloistered halls of a university. Such is as it should be for when one spends the required time and does the required work of an institution, he naturally wonders about the rewards of such labors. But actually, there is no question. The heights to which one should expect to rise is ascertained from the depths to which he has striven. As the structure of a new build¬ ing can be surmised from an investigation of its foundation, so also is the structure of a life conjecturable from its groundwork. All that we have to build on is that which we have already laid, what we are to become is predetermined by the pattern we have made for ourselves. As you leave our school to begin in your new lives, we extend to you our best wishes for success and our most sincere prayers for your well-being. You need not fear the future nor be apprehensive about it. If you have laid a strong and steady founda¬ tion and will build thereon, your destiny is promising and your hope assured. G. L. Right- away, under the guidance of Miss A. D. McLaurin and class president, Carl Apper- white, the class was off to a good start. Other offices elected were: vice president-- Raymond Jackson, secretary--Leona Kirby, treasurer--Milton Legrande. It was during this year that everyone was busy joining all the school clubs and organizations. Though much time and thought was given to these activities, school work was not neglected. We merged wisely from Freshmen to Sophomores. This year our capable leaders were president--Audrey Nixon, vice president--Katie Dunlap, secretary--Brenda Cun¬ ningham, treasurer—Milton Legrande. Brenda Carpenter won the oratorical contest and Audrey Nixon was an attendant to Miss Homecoming. As Juniors, we had two main projects: The Homecoming Drive and the Junior- Senior Prom. With Miss McLaurin as advisor and Audrey Nixon as president, it was not a hard task to win the Miss Homecoming Drive. But what everyone enjoyed this year was the Prom. Our theme was On a Tropical Island. It was a big success and the last stop of the Junior Class. But most of these students returned as Seniors to make their final bow at West Badin High. Our leaders for the year were president--Raymond Jackson, vice president-- Margie Miller, secretary--Brenda Carpenter, assistant secretary--Charlene Kirby, treasurer--Milton Legrande. This year we were greeted with a new advisor, Miss L. R. Martin. With great anticipation everyone ' s attention was set on the yearbook activities and most of all--the graduation exercises.
