McLaurin; Typist and Copy Reader, Cora Moore. m€4AoncC As one year fades away and the next begins, an¬ other class has graduated. But will high schooldays be forgotten and left behind? The 1959 Blue Devil was published in order that we may always be able to look back and recollect the happy, carefree, and yet busy hours we have spent in W. B. H.; to see at a glance our classmates, friends and teachers, and to keep in our hearts the many fond memories of days gone by. We hope that each and every one greatly enjoys the book. May it always remind you of moments you wish to remember. ecUccitcoK To our helpful and understanding advisor who has rendered every service possible to uphold the Senior Class of 1959; to one who has worked tireless and without ceasing, to encourage educational improve¬ ment in our school; to one who guided us in all our undertakings; who has taught us willingly and with fullest capacity; no words can express our deepest and sincerest feelings for this wonderful person. Therefore, we, the Senior Class of 1959, proudly dedicate this edition of The Blue Devil to our very own- MISS A. D. McLAURIN MR, G. L. HINES, Principal West Badin High School B. S. Morehouse College, Atlanta Ga. M. S, North Carolina College, Durham, N. C. TO THE SENIORS OF THE CLASS OF ' 59: Upon your completion of this year’s work, another dream will have been ful¬ filled, another resolution will have been accomplished. You will then look back at a task which was once before you and perhaps reminisce over many of the in¬ cidents encountered as you made your way toward this end. From this vantage point, another goal will be discerned and other tasks will await your solutions. This continuous cycle never ends, for as soon as one task is completed another awaits to be solved. To some people, this is a discouraging picture. To be forever completing then beginning, is not their idea of a good life and as a result, completed tasks be¬ come few and new goals become overshadowed with egotistical praises of, What 1 Used to do... Needless to say, we would that you take a different view. Our prayers are that, to you, each completed task will be but a step to the next one and each new opportunity, a challenge to be dared. lor success is not attained by those who get through, by those who can ' t find anything else to do, One ' s atti¬ tude toward unsolved problems, new frontiers and unanswered questions spells the difference between the successful person and the one whom success passes by. Each had the required ticket--a certif¬ icate of promotion from the last station, the eighth grade. And it came to pass that promptly upon the stroke of 8:30 we answered the conductor ' s cry of All aboard in the Train of Knowledge. We were given places in the Freshman Coach. We chose as president of our group Gilbert McLendon with his able assistants: Vice-President, Harold Apperwhite; Secre¬ tary, Emma Hough; and Treasurer, Senora Boulware. These royal leaders saw that we gained sufficient pep, loyalty, and school spirit, while conductor Miss M. E. Jordan saw to it that they properly digested the meals served them by the Faculty Chefs and Porters. At the end of the first year, having successfully met the requirements of Freshman Passengers, we were transferred to the Sophomore Car with Mrs. M. E. Talbert as conductor. We bravely endured the jolting of the rougher travel. Amelia Allen was chosen President of the trip. The journey was livened by a number of helpers: Vice-President, Betty Davis; Secretary, Evelyn Bennett; and Treasurer, Gilbert McLendon, With the passing of time, we were again shifted, and placed in the Junior Coach with 26 jolly members of whom passenger, Willie Ridenhour, was elected President. His helpers were: Vice-President, Harold Apperwhite; Secretary, Frank Richardson; and Treasurer, Gilbert McLendon. Our new conductor was Miss A. D. McLaurin. Several passengers got off at side stations and did not resume the trip but others became passengers. The most enjoyable stop was the Junior-Senior Prom. At last came the happy day when the group was transferred to the Senior Coach with increased privileges and responsibilities, with Mary Kirby as Class President. Her helpers were: Vice-President, Willie Rldenliour; Secretary, Cora Moore; and Treasurer, Winifred Rush. The grade became steeper, the journey rougher, but ah, the glorious views as the class of 1959 looked out on Commencement Station looming in the near distance. We came to appreciate more fully the supervision given us by conductor Miss A. D. McLaurin. We grew puffed up over the records of certain members in the side trips of Athlet¬ ics and Oratorical Stages. They passed the close inspection of the examiners on various roads leading through the Valley of Opportunity in the land of The Great Beyond, to the cities of Success, Fame, and Worthy Achievements.
