BENNETT Assistant Editor-JESSIE LEE McPHAlL FOREWORD One of the most important and outstanding undertakings of our Senior year has been to publish our annual, a book of honor and satisfaction. We have tried to produce a book that would represent us well and one that all of you would be proud of, with the help of a very enthusiastic and hard working staff, I feel we have succeeded. We may in the years to come look back on this year of 1958, as being one filled with co-opera¬ tion and a winning spirit, a year that should recall all of our high school career for many years to follow. As editor I wish to thank the entire staff, the faculty and the student body for their many helps and encouragements to us. May the Blue Devil of 1958 always serve to re¬ mind you of our many high school days spent together and a desire to meet again in the future. Editor-in-chief Geraldine Watkins Gon en s DEDICATION BUILDINGS PRINCIPALāS MESSAGE ADMINISTRATION STUDENT COUNCIL SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN ELEMENTARY SNAPSHOTS FAVORITES CLASS HISTORY CLASS WILL ATHLETICS HOMECOMING QUEENS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISEMENTS PATRONS We, the staff of the 1958 Blue Devil, proudly dedicate this annual to our beloved advisor, Mrs. Bennett, whose help has made possible our present standards. She was known for giving every student an equal chance to make an honest score. We feel very fortunate to have loved and shared such gracious and loving experiences with her. Her smiles vanished our tears and her counseling was that of the greatest value. Because she was a friend as well as a teacher, we dedicate our love and annual to her. The Seniors West Badin High Administration Building To The Seniors of the Class of ' 58 As you leave our school, your thoughts naturally scan the ever-present future. Differen t professions loom before your horizons and plans of a good life obliterate all ideas of unat¬ tainable desires. Such is as it should be. For he who envisions defeat, lends himself to failure; he who is obsessed with doubt, finds even the simple tasks, difficult. To rise above the masses takes more than the ability to do so - there must beā that over¬ whelming desire to succeed and win. If one is to fulfill his ambitions, perseverance must be his motivating force and con¬ fidence his constant companion. Sincerely yours. G. L. Hines MRS. Let us return to the year of 1955 when we were crazy mixed up freshmen, just taking life easy and enjoying ourselves. We elected our officers. They were-Johnnie Maske, President; Vice President, Charlie James Richardson; Shirley Bruton, Secretary; Annie Scriven, Treasurer; and Mr. A. Clark, Advisor. We had Four Years of Presidents a lot of participants in a variety of activities, such as; The Glee Club, N.H. A., Library Guild, Band Football, and Basketball. As we continued the journey of 1956 as Sophomores, we were more energetic than we were our Freshman year, with Geraldine Watkins, President; Jessie McPhail, Vice Presi¬ dent; Maxine Bennett, Secretary; Shirley Bruton, Treasurer; and Mr. A. Clark , Ad¬ visor. Our class was well represented in other organizations and activities such as: Stu¬ dent Council, and Cheering Squad. Soon we became Juniors, with Joe Grambling, President; Geraldine Watkins, Vice- President; Johnnie Maske, Secretary; Dorothy Reid, Treasurer; and Mrs. B. Bennett, Ad¬ visor. The Junior-Senior Prom was an outstanding event which everyone anticipated going to with great enthusiasm. During this year, which can be said to be our most outstanding year, we were fortunate enough to have Virginia Gray represent us as Miss Homecoming. This year was one of many joys for the Blue Devils, with Joe Grambling, Roy Washington, Levander Lilly, and Robert Kirby putting forth their best efforts, we were able to win the C. 1. A. A. championship in basketball. At last we ' ve reached the end of our journey. Our officers were; Levander Lilly, Presi¬ dent; Jessie McPhail, Vice President; Kathryn Shepherd, Secretary; Roy Washington, Treas¬ urer; and Mrs. B. Bennett, Advisor. With this, the graduating class of 1958, we take with us loving memories of years at West Badin High. It is inconceivable for any one of us to tell how much we enjoyed our years here, but I think I voice the sentiments of each mem¬ ber of the Senior Class when I say, it has been wonderful. To Mr. Hines, our principal, we say thanks for extending a strong guiding hand of which we could grasp it, and find help and guidance. To our instructors who for four years have shared our joys as well as our sorrows and who have aided us in order that we might conceive this day, we express our sincere thanks.
