WEST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL AURORA, ILLINOIS VOLUME NUMBER FIFTY-THREE 3 Bill Pfiefler, our new football captain, is congrotulotcd by Coach Zim as our old captoin, Bob Kellett looks on. Our Homecoming queen Marlet Jones talks to Ric Moc-Dowell at the gome. Our winning track team proves that WEST IS BEST. Our school unites behind leaders like these. Our pep planners work Sundays. Our record breaking Its Academic team. AS ALL GOOD eaicaiion tii TO THE EXPERT TEAM OF A. C. RIDINGER % G. F. BROCK. WHOSE TOTAL YEARS OR SERVICE TO WEST SENIOR HIGH NUMBER THIRTY-FIVE, WE OF THE EOS EXPRESS APPRECIATION AND EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR THE FUTURE. It was 1953, when our Blackhowk tribe moved into their new quarters, that George F. Brock ushered in a new era fresh from his role as principal at Edwardsville, Illinois. The intervening years have seen him guide us academically through the increase in library volumes, a foreign language laboratory, a faculty twice its size at his coming. And physically. West has added fourteen rooms in 1961 with construction commencing shortly on facilities which will double our size. Good luck, Mr. Brock in your new position as vice president in charge of student services at Missouri Valley College, Marshall, Missouri. 6 Your retirement has been well earned, Mr. Ridinger. May you enjoy many happy years reflecting upon your successes at West. THINGS MUST . . . Drawing his twenty-six year career in education to a close. Assistant Principal A. C. Ridinger announced his retirement effective the close cf this school year. During his twenty-four seasons with us he has taught social studies, served as Dean of Boys, organized our student council, was state adviser to student councils, and Assistant Principal. But more, he has been a sympathetic disciplinarian, a confidential friend, and an enthusiastic supporter to countless numbers of Blackhawks. 7 SENIORS SUE ST. JULES, TREASURER. SUE McWETHY. Homecoming, with its theme based on current advertising slogans, ran another day this year. For Those Who Think Young, the traditional after-the-game dance was held on Saturday due to the new state wide curfew. Alums, who are urged by student council invitation to attend the festivities, were in fewer number than usual. This was attributed to the fact that homecoming fell so early in the year. On the Field our Blackhawks hod a disappointing encounter against Naperville suffering a 38 to 12 defeat. Climaxing the homecoming pep auembly, wot the presentation, by Copfoin Bob Kellctt of the queen, Marlct Jones. Student council president Ric MocDowell named Judy Anderson first attendant. Jon Michels MARCELO Arriving from Cach oeiro de Itapomirim, Brazil, in lafe August, Jose Marcelo Moscon became the eighth member of the Dr. Gerald Michels family. Being one of ten children and a dentist's son, he felt completely at home with the Michels, who were warm and understanding and a wonderful family. School was very challenging for Marcelo, but he enjoyed every day of it. Physics, college algebra and trigonometry were his favorite subjects. Watching football games was a new experience for Marcelo. However, he was quick to learn and cheered louder than anyone else in the stands. Since he played basketball in Brazil, Marcelo went out for wrestling, another new experience for him. The friendliness of the students at West High impressed Mar-ceto very much. Any fears he possessed were proven false when only smiles met him the first day of school. Always gay and ready for a friendly teasing, Marcelo endeared himself to everyone he met. A watch was presented to Marcelo by about forty of his classmates at a surprise party in his honor, a party he will always remember. Next year Marcelo plans to enter college and study engineering. Sometime in the future he wants to return to the United States and see his many friends. To Marcelo friendship is the most important thing anyone can have. SHAHLA At the end of the first semester. West High students and faculty learned that they were soon to be the hosts of another American Field Service foreign exchange student. Shah-la Masood came to us from Ahwoz, Iran, via a half year stay in West Bend, Wisconsin. Living with the Robert Balsley family gave Shahla her home away from home. Although the Balsley's have no children at home, Shahla truly enjoyed living with them because they were so youthful and understanding. Among the courses which she took, speech class held Shahla's interest most. She also liked the way our music department is set up and being in Concert Choir. Shahla thought that American history was very interesting but found it difficult to participate in the heated discussions which took place because her English is not fluent enough. Shahla believes that girls should participate in competitive sports. This was one phase of Iranian life which she missed. Shahla likes our basketball games best because she was able to understand it. In Iran they play basketball the same way as in America. Although Shahla lived in Aurora only a short time, her popularity in the community spread. She was called upon to make many speeches for different organizations, telling them about herself and life in Iran. Shahla enjoyed giving these speeches because she felt the people were sincere in their interest. Grateful for the Friendship of our students, Shahla had this to say about America, You American people are very wise. All the world learns English and people from all over come to America. You learn about other peoples and countries intimately without traveling. an AFS ABROAD As parr of the American Field Service Program of International understanding and good will, I, Ric MacDowell, spent six weeks with the Hans Camerer family of Bevel, West Germany. Leaving New York in late June, I sailed with six hundred other Americans to Rotterdam and then traveled by train to Bonn, West Germany's capital. From my First moment with my family, I found a very human feeling of warmth and understanding experienced by all members of the global AFS family. Living as a German brought along with its embarrassment over unknown manners, its challenge of absorbing as much information as possible, a very honest picture and genuine understanding of the people of Germany. The trials of World War I and II, the terror of post-war strife and the work it took to rebuild a very badly defeated nation, all became very apparent as I met and talked with people of all walks of life. Government officials, prison camp veterans, school teachers, students, industrial workers and farmers were introduced to me. I traveled from Bremen in the North to Frieburg in the South, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. With all of these unforgettable experiences I gleaned one very basic and important fact—People are the same all over the world in their basic characteristics—love, hate, charity, selfishness. When asked what I felt my main purpose was and what I had accomplished, I said that I felt my major aim was to make the United States look as favorable as possible in the eyes of the people I met. But as to accomplishments, I could not tell. TERRY Gaining a wealth of knowledge, a new family and a hundred friends for life, I know that this is an experience which will not be forgotten. If a whole is the sum of its parts, then my summer as an Iranian AFSer can be described as a long sequence of good times, fascinating sights, and awkward situations, all connected by periods of relative peace and quiet. Depending upon ones location and the time of day, the Middle East can be a very restful haven from the usual full speed ahead routine to which we all become accustomed sooner or later (usually later). In a country where ice is sold off a donkey's back by vendors in the streets, haircuts are given by hand—clippers, and businesss is done in the bazaars just as it was 500 years ago, one begins to feel the hurry-up slip away to be replaced by what's the rush. The avenues of the large cities, which during the morning are almost as busy as Downer before curfew, become as still as the desert when everyone stretches out for a siesta around one o'clock. Heat hangs heavily over tiny shops and wide, empty streets during that time of day when even the taxi drivers begin looking for a patch of shade instead of rich American customers. Only a foreigner would stand around looking at empty streets when he could seek respite from the sun in the cool interior of his Persian home. Pretty soon, however, even the foreigner catches on and retires to his room for a feast of grapes and Orev cookies while he reads that book he never had time for before. Until each line of print begins to look just like the next and the young man's eyes become extremely heavy. He wakes up in time for Tea and takes a swim if he likes. In a few more days he will be addicted to their routine and won't be worth a plugge rial if he doesn't get his afternoon nap. Things are going Fine for our hero until suddenly his seven weeks are up, and he is making his way back. The dream fades, and the Statue Of Liberty, O'Hare Field, family, friends, chocolate cake, good music, green grass, and everything else that is America rushes up to surround him with a big welcome hug. Gosh, he murmurs, It's good to be home. I. lo r. Rudic (brother), Mrs. Camerer, Hansi (brother), Ric, Louise (sister). Pete Gromctcr. The main goal of West's 1963-64 student council was to provide a good basis for future councils. Improvements were made in the student-supervised study halls, cafeteria monitor system, hall monitors, and American Field Service programs. Work was done with the junior highs in arranging next year's club program. Attempts were made to make junior high students aware of the importance of student council at the senior high level. This year's council worked with extremely close faculty cooperation, initiated the student parking lot program, and hosted the Up-stafe Eight Fall Convention. West became known on advanced levels of student council work; Bob Alcorn was elected North West District president; West had candidates in the state student council election and applied for national convention representation. Our 1963-64 student council aided other high schools and junior highs in an attempt to improve the student council movement within the state. 93 OFFICERS (I. to r.) Changes in activity of all clubs correspond to varying student interest, and the handicap imposed by an extended class schedule caused administration, faculty, and the Student Coun- cil to evaluate the situation. By volunfering to conduct meetings before or after the school day, so that clubs could continue, faculty sponsors endorsed the program. Student Council assumed its responsibility by conducting a survey amongst incoming sophomores to determine needs for new organizations. JUNIOR RED CROSS UL LnULIV KNEELING (I. to r.) Only in the first contest, a non conference game against St. Charles, were the Blackhawks able to come out on top. At practices during each week Blackhawk technique continually matured, offering great promise for the forthcoming game. On Fridays, however, small comfort was taken in the progress made over the previous week. Truly disturbing was the blow dealt after the close of the season when our only victory was wiped off as a result of playing an ineligible athlete. Ultimately two junior varsity games were also forfeited for the same reason. 127 Bob Kellett Greg Alcorn Al Brown Jerry Connor BLACKHAWKS FIGHT A DISAPPOINTING Breok-Away Back Jerry Connor breaks away lor 15 yords. SOPHOMORES HAVE NEW SPIRIT Taking over from Coach Bill Woll-baum, who moved up to rehearsing the J-V's, is Mr. Robert Nordengren, a man new to West High this year. Together with Coach Mike Adolph, he fielded a team that provided several memorable footnotes as, the Glenbard East gome which we won by the ticklish score of 8 to 7. Further excitement come during the East-West gome when of the half, our sophs led by 7 to 6. Undoubtedly the new policy of the Upstate 8 to play sophomore games on Saturday mornings has affected the support usually given the underclassmen. They have done much to offset this disadvantage by these fight scores. SOPH. HARRIERS SOPH. HARRIERS SHOW FORM One of the moin objectives of the sophomore cross country team is to fake boys from the junior highs and prepare them for the years ahead. In fulfilling this goal Coach Gleasman and the sophomore squod were a success. There was much enthusiasm for sophomore cross country this year, and there will probably be more in the future, so one can be sure that these boys will be heard from in the next two years. WEST HIGH’S CAGERS IMPROVE IN ’63-64 SEASON After whipping Geneva's Vikings, the Blackhawks faced a tough schedule which provided loyal followers with some heartbreaking moments. A victory over East Aurora by the clock-racing score of 63—62 did much to buoy spirits of both the teams and the spectators. Throughout the season Coach Clayton Rabedeaux searched, experimented, and tested to find the winning combination of five. Shifting players from Junior Varsity to the varsity and even from sophomore squad to Varsity, he exhausted virtually every avenue that looked like if might lead to success. One of Weil's greatest ossets was height. Here Larry Fin-strom (no. 35, a 6-foot 1 l-inch junior, awaits a rebound as Jon Michels (no. 21) looks on. Another one of this year's ossets was a strong bench to back up the starling five. Ken Farrar, Dave Mamminga. and Paul Jones jump to their feet to give words of cr cour-133 ogement to their teammotes. Randy Morris tries for two points against Elgin. John Whittle, No. 24. waits for a possible rebound os a teammate puts up a shot. Jim Vaughn, No. 32, attempts a jump-shot. 134 Jon Michels fakes, and puts up on easy layup. JAYVEES TAKE OVER FRIDAY NIGHT SPOT This year, the first in the newly formed Upstate Eight Conference, saw the Junior Varsity teams in the league taking over the conference preliminary games from the sophomores. The Hawklets provided cage fans with many tense moments. One of these will probably never be forgotten by the fans and especially the boys on the team. The night of January 31 against Glenbard East our Jayvee squad came from behind to tie the score in the fourth quarter only to repeat the tie in two overtime periods. A win of 56—54 came finally at the end of a third overtime. Although all these boys could not play on the varsity team they shared moments like this which make Jayvee ball very worthwhile. SOPHOMORES HAVE MANY BRIGHT PROSPECTS Shifting from Friday night to Saturday morning and Monday afternoons did not dampen the spirits of the Sophomore Basketball squad, under the direction of Coaches Kerkman and Nordengren. The starting five varied from game to game throughout the entire season. Both Tinker Johnson and Terry Rosenberg ployed Junior Varsity ball along with some Sophomore action at the beginning of the season. Among the others who played key roles as starters were: Kent Habermeyer, Butch Ethington, Larry Shepard, Bill Silverstein, Tom Sperry, Bob Testin, and Rich Felts. Inspired by a feeling for West High tradition and fine coaching, the Sophs had a good year. Two Sophomores who changed uniforms to become Jayvccs were Tinker Johnson (left, partially hiddenl and Terry Rosenberg (No. 44) taking a foul shot. 136 Vorsity wrestlers for 63-64: FRONT ROW, Mgr. This record gained them a tie for second place in the Upstate Eight dual meet standings at the close of the season. Blackhawk wrestlers excelled individually as well. In the Palatine Christmas Tourney, Bob Kellett (180 pounder) and Ron Gabbett heavyweight) captured first place awards, while Greg Alcorn took a second in the 154 pound division. In regular season competition Gabbett went undefeated stretching his conference victories to twenty in a row, and Kellett lost only once this year. 137 This year's co-captains were Greg Alcorn and Ron Gabbett. Ric MacDowell fared well in the 440, while Skip Stolley, Rodger Field, and Dave Newell were strong in distance competition. Topping things off was Ron Gobbett, excelling in the shot and discus. Coaches Gleasman, Adolph, and Robedeaux also banked heavily on sophomores. Among these were: Tinker Johnson, Terry Rosenberg, Ed Podschweit, and Rich Ellis. West's tennis squad returned in 1964 with a nucleus of seven men coached by Mr. Rod Senn in his second year at the helm of West's tennis program. With the help of three co-captains, John Hewitt, Bruce Goldsmith, and Jerry Peterson, Coach Senn was able to offer a fine opportunity to tennis minded West high athletes. The season began with a number of pre-conference tilts followed by action against member schools of the Upstate Eight. After this was completed. GOLF SQUAD BUILT ON EXPERIENCE Looking for o repeat of last year's winning season, our golf squad leaped to meet Joliet on April 6. Their schedule included thirteen matches and was highlighted by district, city and Upstate Eight meets. Participation against the new conference schools gave rise to new procedures. All interested linksmen met on March 30 and again on April 1 for qualifying rounds. The top twenty-five scores were listed according to rank and class. Also, Coach Dick Dorsey held after school practice sessions for the first time in West's golfing history. Golfers, including four varsity lettermen, were captained by John Whittle. 144 Captain John Whittle FACES REFLECT HOW . . . Zaeske 1106 Randall Road Under the watchful eye of Chief Blackhawk ninety seven years devoted to the preparation of useful citizens has been the foremost tradition of West High. Each generation; each year; each day has seen a living, changing West adapting to the needs of her students. Will we, upon our return to a homecoming one or ten years hence, expect to find the very same alma mater? No, that wouldn't reflect the West we all love. West must continue its change to meet the needs of the future so that they, of the future, may find, as we have, the greatness that is West. All staff members of this fifty third volume of the Eos hope that their efforts in this yearbook help you to remember more clearly the year ot West. Our gratitude is extended to every student and faculty member for their cooperation throughout the year. An extra note of appreciation is extended to Mr. Hugo Peterson and Mr. Raymond Vladar, faculty advisors to the business and editorial staffs,- to Walinger Studios, our class photographers,- to Craftco Company, who executed our cover design,- and to American Yearbook Company, our publishers.
