Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1963 volume:

,VWUs BIACKHAWKS — Chief Blackhawk with his tribe of Sac Indians once roamed these prairies of nothern Illinois, and for him our Blackhawk Street was named. He was a valiant fighter always loyal to the interests of his people. It is proper, therefore, that we, the Class of 1937, bestow upon our own valiant warriors, the athletic teams of West High School, the name of Blackhawks. May they ever maintain the highest ideals of courageous action, loyalty, and sportsmanship. As our student population continued to grow, so did West In the foil of 1953 eighty seven years of proud history moved into new, expanded quarters. From then until now — our tenth anniversary — West Senior High has grown and changed. The constant characteristic throughout this history is the dedication to develope an educated person, a well-rounded citizen, one who will lead as capably os he will follow. Sixty-two was another heart-breaker for those who looked for winning scores from the Red and Blue. Bu unlike Mudville, there was joy in the hearts of the Blackhawks, because they had a team to be proud of. They remember the tough Auburn Homecoming game and the disheartening East-West game. But they also remember the East Rockford game, when West gave the big team a surprise, held their own, and came out with a state rating. What made them a great team was that they gave and gave as much as they could, and never let up. This fighting spirit was noticed by others in the Big-Eight, too. Captain Dave Petree and Ron Gabbett were named All-Conference guard and tackle, and tackle Buddy Reedy received honorable mention. If Captain-elect Bob Kellett's team, including twelve experienced varsity letter-men, can hold onto half the spirit of this year's team, nothing should stop them! INJURIES HOLD BACK HAWKLET SQUAD The significant factor for the unsuccessful sophomore season was the amazing amount of injuries. These were seldom serious, but managed to keep players out for two or three weeks at a time. The only game when we really hod full force, said Coach Wallboum, was the East-West game, when the Hawk-lets tied 2nd place East 6—6. There were many games where a few minutes could have made a difference in the end result: the Auburn and Freeport games for example. The sophs have shown strong possibilities, and it is hoped thot they will be back full force on the varsity team in sixty-three. HEIGHTENED ENTHUSIASM FOR CROSS COUNTRY The second cross country season brought with it a show of maturity for Coach Gleasman's squad. With a great deal more interest, spurred by last year's successful season, the team had over twice as many participants. Because of this enthusiasm toward cross country. West captured several more victories over last year's squad. High point of the season for both sophomore and varsity was the win over Morris Community High School during which the sophomore team, captained by Jim Hauser, took the first five places. The varsity, captained by Walt Pennington, followed through as Morris succumbed to West 25 to 34. Perhaps it should be noted that the team with the lowest score wins. With the first five continuous place winners for West being juniors the outlook for another fine season seems good. MATMEN LEAVE IMPRESSIVE RECORD Wrestling's popularity is on the increase here at West. Our matmen entered the Big Eight Conference meet with a 5—7 record and secured 2nd. place behind a tough East High team. At the District meet, our grapplers walked off with the championship. In competition at the Sectional, Ron Gabbeft placed 2nd, Paul Reedy and Jerry Connor placed 3rd, and Dan Sjostrond took 4th. There were several impressive records compiled during the season,- most notable of which was that of Gabbett's — 21 — 1 — 1. Coochcs for 1962-1963 season: I. to r. Ger-old Roy, Dick Zuege. Bob Hall. Coached by Mr. Richard Zuege, the young matmen learned the technique of this sport which pits individual against individual. The value of this training and experience during the sophomore year has proven itself in the caliber of competition at the varsity level. Concluding their season with a 3—win 5—loss record, the novices displayed considerable growth in their knowledge of the sport. This knowledge will serve them well as they graduate to the varsity ranks. A nemesis, plaguing the varsity squads since the late 50's, fashioned another rough season. An overall glance of the 62-63 chapter fails to reflect the countless hours of sacrifice poured into each contest. Hours of prcctice, that came before school and after school with drills — offensive, defensive, rebounding, shooting — that increased after each defeat, have not been totalled. Hours of tension preceded every game. And the tension increased with each week. The rewards of competition we can all appreciate, (and sometimes envy' but the price that must, at times, be paid is an agony reserved for those who go out tc meet the challenge. A special salute is given to the man who understood better than most the spirit of West — first year varsity basketball coach Clayton Rabedeaux. Our part of the dual track A.F.S. program was upheld by Mary Ann Bothe who, os an American Abroad, spent the summer in Sweden. Mary Ann lived for seven weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Sten Kjellman, their son Anders, 19, and their daughter Ingela, 15. During this time the family mode their home in Goteborg and at Hindas, a summer place nearby. Trips to Stockholm and the Kjellman's relations in other parts of Sweden enriched Mary Ann's knowledge of the language and customs. Even more significant was the awakening that our people are so similar Flying to Montreal, Canada, our Blackhawk ambassador boarded the S. S. Seven Seas, used by A.F.S.ers only, for her trip across the Atlantic. The 10-day voyage included study of the foreign language she would be using and explanation of the role she was about to assume os a representative of the United States in another country. Like most travelers Mary Ann brought back a number of souvenirs, but most of all she has im-pressions of her charming Swedish foster family and a much larger, friendlier world. 94 AMALIA XANTHOULI Amalia and her adopted lister. Sally Hickman Amalia and Rita Walvij, foreign exchange student from East High Amalia Xanthouli is no longer all Greek fo the students or faculty at West High. Arriving from Rhodes, Greece in August as our third American Field Service foreign exchange student, Amalia made her home with the George Hickman family. She and her new sister had the opportunity to acquaint themselves with one another exclusively while in Michigan at the Hickman's summer place during the days before school began. More than a little shy when she addressed the entire student body on January 9, Amalia rapidly gained her self confidence and embarked on a round of community appearances that soon exceeded in number those of her predecessors. Football and basketball games were the things that interested our guest most; particularly the cheers and excitement that are so much a part of these activities at West. Her own participation was in A Cap-pella, G.A.A., Girls' Club, Paint Pot Club, and Student Council. Endless hours of stuffing chicken wire culminated in the October 12 parade past city hall led by our marching band and including the greot bands of both Jefferson and Franklin Junior Highs. Kicking off the homecoming festivities was Mother Goose herself at an 11 o'clock pep assembly where Queen Carol White and her attendants Beth Ness, Diane Holdren, Lindy Drew, and Kathy Stark were presented by Dave Petree, football captain,- Kent Shell, student council president; John Peters, senior class president; Jerry Peterson, junior class president; and Bert Bennef, sophomore class president. Dismissal from closs followed so that the mile long parade could be organized. That evening, between sophomore and varsity games against Auburn of Rockford, the winning floats were announced os they passed in review through the stadium. Homecoming 1962 danced to a close at a semi-formal entitled Through the Looking Glass which was attended by a number of alums as well as students who wouldn't have missed a minute of our Storybook Saga.
