The 1960 Hawklets finished 7th in the Sophomore division of The Big Eight Conference. They had a record of 3 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie. Until the final gun, the Hawklets were in every game. In their opener, the Hawklets came from behind with 14 points in the last quarter to beat DeKalb, 21 to 6. The Sophs bowed to a powerful Joliet team, 31 to 6, the following Friday. A week later, on September 30, although outplaying the L-P Sophomores, the Hawklets fumbled in the final period, enabling L-P to score and win 14 to 7. The Hawklets met Auburn on October 7 at our Homecoming and displayed a fine offense to defeat an inexperienced team, 25 to 6, to win their first conference game. At East Rockford, on October 14, the Hawklets still blazing from their win over Auburn, showed a fine defense and overpowered the E-Rab Sophomores 12 to 7 to make it two in a row. They returned to play the West Rockford team on a wet field. Meeting Freeport at home a week later on October 28, the Hawklets battled the Freeport Sophs to a 13-13 tie and ended up with the ball on the one-yard line when the game ended. On November 4, at Elgin, the Hawklets played the entire game in a downpour and hindered by rain dropped a 12-6 decision to the Maroon Sophs. The Hawklets finished off their season with a hard-fought battle which they lost 20 to 6 to a rugged Kitten Eleven. Howklct defenders Bob Speers (12). Coach Bob Knilans in his first year as Varsity basketball coach had both the problem of height disadvantage and that of inexperience with which to contend. By the end of the season the team had come a long way and showed it in victories over East Aurora, Elgin, and the upset of the high-rated LaSalle-Peru team. Gary Munn Bob Rea Dick Green Page 16
