To the students of West High, we dedicate this book. Like echoes that fade, yet linger in the hallways of West High, the memories of 1960-61 will return to us in the years to come. With hurried footsteps this year has passed into the halls of memory, but the West High Spirit shall not desert our hearts so quickly. The EOS staff has chosen to picture the contagious enthusiasm of W.A. in the form of an ever-present shadow I’1- 1 ■ ’ SPORTS ACTIVITIES CLASSES FACULTY Poge 3 A Student watched the construction of the new addition, and then proudly moved in. Our 1960 Blackhawk football squad was one of the best fielded by Coach Ken Zimmerman and Line Coach Dick Zuege in the last few years. End Coach Dick Dorsey also did an outstanding job with his charges. The team had both size and speed and above all the spirit and enthusiasm necessary for a championship team. The spirited season left us not only in possession of the Big Eight Trophy but also permanent holder of the Exchange Club Trophy gained by the third straight win by the Blackhawks over their cross-town rivals, the East High Tomcats, in their 68th meeting. Although every player did his part to insure victory, there were a few standouts on this team that deserve special recognition. They had a record of 3 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie. Until the final gun, the Hawklets were in every game. In their opener, the Hawklets came from behind with 14 points in the last quarter to beat DeKalb, 21 to 6. The Sophs bowed to a powerful Joliet team, 31 to 6, the following Friday. A week later, on September 30, although outplaying the L-P Sophomores, the Hawklets fumbled in the final period, enabling L-P to score and win 14 to 7. The Hawklets met Auburn on October 7 at our Homecoming and displayed a fine offense to defeat an inexperienced team, 25 to 6, to win their first conference game. At East Rockford, on October 14, the Hawklets still blazing from their win over Auburn, showed a fine defense and overpowered the E-Rab Sophomores 12 to 7 to make it two in a row. They returned to play the West Rockford team on a wet field. Meeting Freeport at home a week later on October 28, the Hawklets battled the Freeport Sophs to a 13-13 tie and ended up with the ball on the one-yard line when the game ended. On November 4, at Elgin, the Hawklets played the entire game in a downpour and hindered by rain dropped a 12-6 decision to the Maroon Sophs. The Hawklets finished off their season with a hard-fought battle which they lost 20 to 6 to a rugged Kitten Eleven. Howklct defenders Bob Speers (12). Coach Bob Knilans in his first year as Varsity basketball coach had both the problem of height disadvantage and that of inexperience with which to contend. By the end of the season the team had come a long way and showed it in victories over East Aurora, Elgin, and the upset of the high-rated LaSalle-Peru team. The score was 63 to 50. Led by Captain Dennis Siebert at center, the starting five usually consisted of Gary Munn and Tom Trotter at forwards and Bob Rea and Tom Young at the guard positions. Important replacements were Chick Manning, Mike Heim, Dick Green, and Jim Groninger. The Junior Varsity coached by Arnie Verbic showed great potential as they compiled the fantastic record of 13 wins with only 1 loss. WRESTLING The 1960-1961 wrestling team had one of its most successful seasons of the last few years. Under Coach Robert Hall, in his first year as wrestling coach, the team was divided into Varsity and Junior-Varsity. The Junior Varsity was composed of both juniors and sophomores. The Varsity, led by Co-Captains Dave Love-kin and Bob Miller, had some very outstanding individual performances. In the Big Eight Wrestling Match, four managed to finish first. They were Dave Lovekin, Bob Miller, Jim Ramey, and Dan Warner. In late February, Bob Miller received fourth place honors, and Jim Ramey won first place in the District Meet. Proceeding to the Sectional, Jim Ramey finished third. Coach Bob Hall congratulates Co-Captains Bob Miller and Dave Lovekin os he presents them with their lettors. TRACK With the return of many lettermen both in track and field, the varsity track team looked forward to a profitable season. In his first year as head coach, Dick Zuege was ably assisted by coaches Zimmerman and Adolph. Although hampered by rain in the first part of the season, the track chargers showed they were in top form with a win over Marmion in their first meet. The Varsity was composed of all seniors with the exception of Junior Denny Converse who was also a returning letterman. The seniors filling positipns were Doug Peterson, Mike Jacobs, Rafie Podolsky, Tom Kazar, Rod Handeland, and Tim Friday. The Junior Varsity was made up of sophomores and juniors. Led by Captain Doug Peterson and coached by Robert Knilans, the squad hoped to continue its predecessor's winning ways. Coach Bob Knilons and Captain Doug Peterson tolk over coming tennis matches. Pago 29 GOLF With Coach Dick Dorsey again leading the golf squad in the spring of 1961, the team looked forward to a very successful season. Because of the loss of John Sloan, the elected captain, Jeff Runkle was chosen as captain. Regularly scheduled practices began after spring vacation, which included a practice match against East Aurora. Much of the early season, however, was hampered by rain. STUDENT COUNCIL Included among the new plans and activities of the 1961 Student Council were the foreign exchange student program, the limitation of the number of representatives on the council, the purchase of an honor roll plaque, Homecoming and the East-West Dance. Besides financing the foreign exchange student, the Council arranged for her to specie during an assembly before the student body. By selling programs at basketball and football games, by sponsoring after-the-game dances, and by selling shares to the student body, the Council surpassed its goal needed for next year's exchange student. The awkward size of the Student Council was reduced to forty-seven from seventy-five members eliminating the dual representation that existed by having representatives from the music department, sports department, speech department, publishing staffs, and club organizations. An enthusiastic pep assembly was held from 11-12, and at noon school was dismissed. A very successful parade was held. After assembling in front of the school, the many floats were escorted through town by motorcycle policemen. Every loyal West High fan let Aurora know who was going to win. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT Although many of us were already well-acquainted with Louise Yngstrom, West's first foreign exchange student, the student body came to know her better during the special assembly at which she spoke. She told of the various activities she participated in while she attended the Gymnasium, a girls' school in Sweden. Music, drama, literature, and art ranked high among her favorites. Louise also spoke about her family; she has a fourteen-year-old sister, Birgetta, and an eight-year-old brother Per, who were both as happy as she was at the prospect of a Yngstrom's visit to the United States through the program of the American Field Service. Louise adapted herself from the day she arrived. This fact was evidenced by the enthusiastic student support given to the fundraising drive for next year's exchange student. It's been great! The Christmas Tea, the Father-Daughter Banquet, the Valentine Tea, and the Birthday Banquet, the never-to-be-missed social functions, were even a greater success than in the previous years. Also exciting and fun was the Bow Dance, Sweet Sensation,” held on April 15. To climax the season, the graduating seniors invited their mothers to the annual Mother-Daughter Tea. The members of the Girls Club worked as Volunteers. During the year many of the girls performed community services which included volunteer work at the Y.W.C.A., Copley Hospital, and the Empty Stocking Fund Party. The Pep Club was responsible for making the artistic displays and signs which became a familiar sight in the halls at West. In addition, the other committees planned the pep assemblies and wrote amusing dialogues for the morning announcements. Pago 49 Beginning the yeor with a new advisor and an active staff, THE RED AND BLUE has undergone a complete re-organization. Governing the student publication was a six-member Editorial Board composed of the Editor-in-Chief and the five page editors. Completing the editorial staff were five associate editors. Lowest on the newspaper's ladder of authority were the reporters, whose contributions provided the material for the fulfillment of the editors' ideas. The two largest projects tackled by the staff, other than the publication of the newspaper, were the mock presidential election in November and the Small Ball, a record hop whose proceeds went to the March of Dimes campaign. Throughout 1960-61, from its first ditto copy to its final issue in June, THE RED AND BLUE has served its school and community dependably and well. During the second semester, several woodwind and brass band players joined the original 17. NATIONAL DEBATE CHAMPIONS 1960 Scoft Whitlock and Graham Evans, ihown at the Notional debate tourney, happily receive the first ploce trophy. Aurora-West, III., broke the domination of the National debate tournament by Seminole, Okla., the winner in 1958 and 1959. Graham Evans and Scott Whitlock united their labor to win first place with a 4-1 decision in the final debate with Independence, Mo. The Aurora team gained 21 favorable ballots from a possible 29 throughout the tournament. The debaters scored 68 points each and specialized in deabte only. Caroline Drumond was the winning coach. The school has attended six previous Nationals, but this is the first big win. The ROSTRUM Maintaining the honor of debate, this year's team met competition on virtually every week-end during second and third quarters. Juniors and seniors who did either volunteer work or nurses aid work during the previous summers explained their jobs and told some of their experiences at one of the club meetings. Some of the members attended a seminar at Bardwell School that was sponsored by the State Medical Auxiliary. After graduation many members of the club plan to become nurses or do some other kind of work in the medical field.
