The main objectives of the organization are threefold: to promote fellowship and sportsmanship; to give every girl an opportunity for service to the school; and to encourage a wholesome social life. A style show, the Christmas and Valentine teas, and the birthday banquet are a few of its special activities. Senior girls who, through service, have earned a certain number of points are awarded the honor of becoming Big Sisters. The purpose of this group is to help guide sophomore and other new girls to a better understanding of West High traditions. Top lo bollom: Jone Peter , Betty Grub . Iren McDonald. The spirited Hawklets of 1959 compiled an outstanding 6-3 record. After winning their two preconference games, they went on to finish third in the Big Eight Conference, remaining in contention for the championship until the closing weeks. After downing the DeKalb Barbs 13-0 in the season opener, the Hawklets with a powerful offense defeated Glenbrook, 47-26. The sophomores rolled up their third straight victory by winning their conference opener, 13-12, from rugged LaSalle-Peru. The sophomore eleven then bowed to a highly rated East Rockford team 34-14. To avenge this loss the Hawklets whipped West Rockford 26-0. They repressed Freeport 35-6 to gain a first place tie with Elgin, their next foe. Although West was up for this game with Elgin, they lost by a score of 19-13 in a game decided by fumbles. In the West-East game an opposition's halfback scored three touchdowns in defeating the Hawklets. They finished on the right foot, however, by conquering Joliet 32-0 during a snowstorm. Coaches Wallbaum and Adolph can be justly proud of their season. They did a creditable job in compiling a fine record and in developing their players for varsity ball. Captain Irv Ochsen-schlager, Jim Konrad, Bob Tilly, Tom Pearson, Jay Ward, Tom Young, Lloyd Hemmings, Gary Munn, and Dennis Siebert formed the nucleus of the squad. In their first track meet, West High defeated Marmion. Because of bad weather, the Ottawa Relays were not held this year. Although West High missed the Ottawa competition, they eagerly anticipated the meets with Joliet, St. Charles, Elgin, Mooseheart, and perennially strong East High in preparation for the district competition and possibly the statewide meet. They won their first ten matches as they defeated York, Downers Grove, Lockport, Glenbard, Maine, Geneva, LaGrange, Wheaton, Arlington Heights, and East High. Six 1959 lettermen bolstered the team. They were cocaptains Noel Smith and Mark Trumbo, Marty Ormond, Jim Cronin, George Arbeiter, and Joe Holty. Bob Lamo-reaux and Dennis Converse also made major contributions to the team's success. There were two highlights in the season. The first was the District at Ottawa on May 7. By placing either first or second, players qualified for downstate competition on May 20 and May 21. The other highlight was the Big 8 Conference meet held at Freeport on May 28. West High was a strong favorite to dethrone last year's champion, Joliet, whom they defeated 5-0 in a dual match earlier in the season. GOLFERS EXPECT GREAT SEASON The West High golf team, coached by Mr. Dorsey, had high hopes for a good season. Mainstays of this year's team were co-captains Dave McCoy and Bill Hobermeyer, both of whom lettered on the 1959 team. They were backed up capably by John Sloan, a transfer student, and juniors Bob Rea and Jeff Runkle. Sophomores Jeff Shaeffer and Frank Tuma also played an important role in the team's success. The linksmen practiced many long hours on the Phillips Park golf course. Included on the golf schedule were matches with East High, Elgin, Glenbard, Marmion, Joliet, Joliet Catholic, and Lockport. Separate from the dual matches with their two cross town rivals was a city triangular which was very important. Later, came Big-8 meets, the district, and the state meet.
