Mr. Halfvarson directed the Girl's Glee Club in a Wide variety of numbers ranging from Malaguena to the Negro spiritual Steal Away. The Christmas Con- cert and Spring Assembly were the two main pro- grams presented by the Girl's Glee Club. From the noisy enthusi- astic singing of a medley of college songs, to the soft phrasing of Holy Lord God, West's newest sing- ing group, the Boys' Glee Club, proved their ability countless times during the year. Organized only two years ago by Choir Director Sten G. Halfvarson, these boys have enjoyed tremendous success and acclaim. Ap- pearing November ZU, with the East-West Local Bar- bershop Men's Chorus, was the first job tackled this year by the Boys' Glee Club. Other performances included the Christmas Concert and Spring Choir Assembly. With the fine blending of their male voices, and the uniformity added by their newly purchased blazers and slacks, the Boys' Glee Club once again proved themselves to be a valuable part of West High's Choral Department. Officers of the group were: Lonnie Long, Presi- dent, Al Kaltofen, Vice President, Kingley Andrews, Secretary, Ted Heindrichs, Treasurer. Small but mightyl There were the words of Mr. Warren Felts as he described the 1956-57 West High orchestra. With only thirty-two people in this group, each person had to do more than his share to provide the rich tone quality and bigness ot sound needed for an excellent orchestra. Meeting daily during 4A, the members were kept busy learning and perfecting music to present at concerts and other engagements. The answer is, of course, the Iunior Red Cross, one of the best liked and most active of all West High groups. Planning an album to send to Australia, filling a gift chest with school supplies, and participating in the annual Red Cross enrollment drive, were ways in which Red Cross members devoted their time and energy to this worthwhile service club. Being in Red Cross was not all work and no play, however, as members proved when they sponsored The Shakespeare Shuffle after the East Rockford basketball game. Gay posters, witty slogan, and skits were highlights of the publicity campaign for this dance. Field trips to the Elgin State Hospital, visits to various hos- pitals in the area, movies, lec- tures, good hard work and lots of fun! What West High organiza- tion offers these things? The answer is of course, the Future Nurse's Club! Busy from the beginning of school in September to the close of the school year in Iune, these aspiring nurses-to-be learned much about their chosen vocation. Through a series of activities and practi- cal experiences, the girls learn- ed first hand about the nursing profession. Films, ex- plaining office practice, proved interesting to these future pri- vate secretaries. Live demon- strations of business techniques were given by fellow commer- cial department students. The losers held a l3-7 halftime lead, but in the third period West High scored the trying and winning points. Continuing this encouraging form, the Blackhawks next sank Naperville 20-O. ln the first conference game of the season, a tough East Rockford team handed West its first loss 20-6. The next week, however, West Rockford met a different fate as the Black- hawks won 26-6. Playing before a responsive home- coming crowd, the Hawks gained their second straight conference win in shutting-out a lively Freeport eleven, l2-U. Combining this defen- sive skill with a deceptive spread formation, the Hawks displayed their best form of the season in losing their next game to Elgin, 26-14. Returning home, West played host to arch rival East Aurora. This excit- ing game was close for the first two quarters, but gradually the speedy East High backs built up a 26-6 vic- tory over the Red 61 Blue. The follow- ing game, however, the Hawks struck back to hang a 26-19 loss on loliet. Ending the season on a win- ning note, West scored a 27-19 vic- tory over LaSalle-Peru. With the help of a key block Ierry Phillips moves into the clear against La Salle-Peru. Gary Harms and Tom Holt were two of the toughest tackles in northern Illinois. With these three conference scalps to their credit, the Hawklets journeyed to Elgin and severely dampened the home- coming spirits of the entertaining eleven. Don West, a fleet fullback, gathered in Elgin's second half kick off and threaded his way 90 yards down the sidelines for a thrilling score in West High's 19 to O victory. These minutes are gone now tor this year, and with them have gone the many problems, surprises, and final achievements in the preparation of this book. Sincere thanks to my co-workers, the 1957 EOS staff, to Miss Castle, our advisor, and to members of the 1957 Business Staff, and Mr. Hugo Peterson, their advisor. The many hours spent working together made this yearbook possible. The play was carefully set up, the King checkmated, and now the game of life at West Senior High for 1956-57 has come to an end. nancy willett, editor Nik? -0- , ,-.N fm., K wc, w ,I N-1 eiiggii .L if 4,.,Ni?XgQ 5 a , 3 Q N as L 9 M .1 N5 sv? , b K K , A ,K Ms , , xx, .Q .2 'Q . fi x-,v,F,.
