Howdy! l'm mighty glad to meet you folks! You know, you're lookin' at just about the most important mouse in West High -- partly because I'm the only one and partly because l'm going to show you this school - from the inside out. We'll see it by means of what certain west coast industries call 'the nflashbaclxu. Come on, and if you want to attract my attention you can yell, Hey, you! l-my mother never named mei. fb l ,Qi X X f if t 1' Q l X i ,tj I if 1:1 l 1 if ff 4? Walker ,pw Guess l'm gettin' old 'cause I remember what this class of '49 did as fresh- men when their officers were: president, Louis Newton: vice-president, Herbie Heissg secretary, Pat Shelpg and treasurer, Barbara Caudry. They planned with Miss Una Pease, their adviser, many things, including the Shamrock Shuffle lFrosh-Soph dancel. Then when they returned as sophomores, l wise fools l, they elected as their officers: Brudd Auther, president: Ruth Krentz, vice-president: Barbara Caudry, secretary, and Douglas Arundale, treasurer. This class smashed some traditions of long standing in their Junior year- getting their class rings in the spring and working on the EOS staff. And oh, those campaigns! These Juniors, Joe Corrigan, president: Bob Strong, vice- president: Liane Morris, secretary: and Bill Mitchell, treasurer, were finally elected. The officers guiding the '49er's in their last year were president, Brudd Autherg vice-president, Cedric Benson, secretary, Cynthia Turner, and treasurer, Joyce Beamish. Advisers this year were Mr. Grant, Mr. Hafen- richter, Mr. Nebergal, Mr. Halfvarson, Miss Pease, and Miss Schoonmaker. PAGE 15 ALBRIGHT, CARL Vocational Club: 3, 4. ALMOND, MAUREEN Dramatics: 3, 4. As proof ot this, the 166 juniors elected on October 7, the following capable officers: Peter Krentz, president: Hugh Hollister, vice-president: Jill Cagle, secretary: and Dave Grey, treasurer. Judy Powell, Helen Schramm, Virginia Nehring, and Connie Wildman completed the cabinet. The advisers of the class were Miss Sauer, head adviser: Mr. Meyer, counselor: Miss Grandy, Miss Brown, Miss Hen- dricks, and Mr. Felts. Some of the many things the class of '50 has accomplished in their third year of high school are the Junior class play, The Great Big Door Step , which was a great success, their concession at the Band Carnival, and the Jr.-Sr. Prom lpresented June 4 lor the senior classl. The 'juniors have made up, l've noticed too, a large percentage of the mem- bers of the Band, A Capella Choir, and the Red and Blue stati- By much hard work and many spectacular plays the iuniors proved invaluable in sports. The football team was aided by the regular playing of several iuniors, while the basketball team played more than hall ot the season with three iuniors on the team. Looking in on a class meeting one day, I observed the capable officers and cabinet busily planning some event. Dean Guzeman was elected president: Doug Hill, vice-president: Tom Blair, secretary: and Burdette Enger, treasurer. Eleanor Larson, Joanne Krentz, Rita Gilson, and Doree Farley completed the cabinet. The sophomores were assisted by their advisers: Miss Lydia Raymond, head adviser: Miss Helen Wood, counselor: Miss Oleda Rislow, Miss Mildred Spangler: Miss Merry Cpfiey: and Mr. Charles Friday. The Sophs showed that they were ambitious, for they participated credit- ably in many activities. The entire Fresh-Soph cheer-leading team was com- posed of sophomores. Carol Hyman, captain: Jean Bridgeford, Janice Knapp, Joan McCrea, and Regina Wozniak were the pepper-uppers. The Springtime Swing , held March 12, was decorated by' many of the sophs, and other class members helped plan the dance to make it a big success. lDean Guzeman suggested the namel. But l did wish he would stop pounding that gavel so close to me! l also wondered if Treasurer Ruth Krentz could appropriate some money for a new mouse house. l'd love one of those modern lustron jobs. l'd have Vice-President Joe Corrigan and Secretary Danny Flynn design it . . . hmmmm . . . I move that. . . Owl l slid out of my hole into Miss Hendricks' meeting and got a splinter in a very strategic place. Howard Matson, president, carried me over to Dale Badner, vice-president and she put a little band-aid on me. Jean Ann Watson, secretary, ancl Marlin Peterson, treasurer, met every month with a council at the chapter house. They almost sent me along with the box filled with gifts for Europe's children. At Christ- mas we helped some orphans' home in Free- port. lt made me feel happy! Creeping cautiously under the tea table, l heard Miss Winteringham, sponsor, talking to the officers - Barbara Caudry, Mert Ben- son, Anita Scholz, and Joan Telford, president. Did anyone see me nibble those crumbs? My little tummy was full also at the Mother- Daughter Tea, Valentine Tea, and Christmas Tea. Once during the year l even found a cozy place to sleep lwhen the Club gathered old clothes for the Bundle drivel. On l scooted . . . l am so proud! On Dad's Day, Poppa Mouse sat on the bench with all the other dads and he even had his own number. It Richie Smith, president of the Boys' Club, had given me the ball, l would have made a touchdown! Joanne and the other officers, Doris Carter, secretary, and Jackie Sass, treasurer, were drawing up committees for these programs. I would have volunteered for several of them, but Miss Oleda Rislow, sponsor, fold me that I have no talent. I did so want to be Hamlet, too! I got a curtain call and everyone applauded! All year I was a trooper in the plays - First Dress Rehearsal, Not Tonight, and Indian Giver, Jodeen Fitzgerald, president, let me ride on their prize winning float. The forty-six mem- bers were peeved at me when I tell asleep in one of their costumes while they were working on the iunior class play. Starr Cressy, vice- president, Joanne DeFrates, treasurer, and Syl- via Sinden, secretary, all helped Miss Brown. What a lively bunch of sophomores there were in the Sophomore Drama Club of which a dif- ferent member took charge each meeting. II suspect this was President Eleanor Larson's idea. It's pretty soft for her and Helen Schmidt, the vice-president. Dorothy Pride, however, makes up for them because she is both secre- tary and treasurerll The club is very active, for instance: Miss Har- riet Grandy, sponsor, accompanied them to see Finian's Rainbow .... The luckies . . . See the mascara on my whiskers? I just at- tended a meeting of the Freshman Drama Club! The officers are: Pat Johnson, president: Naomi Mitchell, vice-president, Joyce Hughes, secretary, and Sue Finley, treasurer. A.'s second Big Eight trophy in three years. Despite terrific blocking by Red McGuire, fullback Dean Guzeman gets snowed under by Joliet forces. Two Big 8 football championships in three years 1 that's our record since our Blackhawks, under the direction of Ken Zimmerman and Chuck Friday, battled their way to an un- disputed Big Eight Championship title this year led by Captain Tom Zakosek. Thrills and chills were present in the first three conference tilts. First, meeting Morris on their field, W. A. came through in the final period when Hawk haltback Dick Fitzgerald recovered a team tumble over goal. The tollowing Friday DeKalb was our victim. Though three West Aurora touchdown runs were called back, we were able to obtain a 13-0 victory. Niles of Skokie, first Red and Blue home game, gave the W. A. rooters something to cheer about. Sophomore fullback, Dean Guzeman, who played a tremendous game, made the iirst Hawk rally by kniiing over from the tour-yard line. Pete Joy scored our next marker when he pushed over from the tive. We played West Rockford before a huge Homecoming crowd the succeeding week and trounced the War- riors I9-O. They just couldn't stop our all-Big- Eight-Conference sophomore fullback, Dean Guzeman. Dean was able to race over the Rockford line three times for the only touch- downs of the game. Richard Smith kicked the conversion. PAGE 69 Varsity Football Strong as always, the Joliet eleven invaded our green October 15. West drew first blood as all-conference Dick Fitzgerald, who played a spectacular game, sprinted 71 yards for the primary score. The Steel- men made good a touchown drive in the third quarter and went ahead as they booted the extra point. With a 7-6 defeat staring them in the face our Hawk team fired-up and scored a second time by an aerial to end John Biever from quarterback Richie Smith. East Rockford's Rabs, our next host club, gave us a hard battle. East scored first, thus giving us something to shoot at. We struck pay-dirt on a 15 yard scamper by Guzeman, but Rockford scored again, iumping to the lead by a I2-7 count. Our all-conference due, Richie Smith and Biever, came through again with a 25-yard pass with Biever on the receiving end. Final score: West I3, Rockford 12. At the annual banquet held April 21, Coach Charles Friday awarded well deserved letters to the following players: Don Anderson, Charles Ben- son, Jim Biever, Ransom Bricher, Larry Conway, Dean Guzeman, Jack Lindstrom, and Tom Meidell. A. has been very kind to me. She and the other officers, vice-president Doris Carter, and secretary-treasurer Joanne McNanna took me to Joliet for their play- day! We had lots oi fun. I was nearly smashed by the falling bodies of over-eager members, but still it was fun. The G. A. A. seems to be very active - 'they're always doing something. Their agenda for the year is arranged so they have bowling, swimming, volley- ball, table tennis, soccer, tennis, and basketball. l wasn't so wild about the table-tennis tho, because it made me dizzy! lTwo girls kept the ball going back and forth so fast that I got dizzy watching it., Helen Schmidt, Marilyn Eck, Janice Knapp, Joanne Krentz served as G. A. A. Sports Managers for the year. PAGE 84 Joanne Plum was another sterling performer at the lanes. .A.. Doris Carter, season's highest bowler, prepares to rack up another strike. Having at- tempted several times, myself, the popular mouse sport known as B-B bowling, I naturally was in- terested in their tips. All the girls in the G. A. A. are enthusiastic plan- ners. They won first prize tor the most original tloat in the Homecoming parade, they held a Sadie Hawkins dance, and they have had a concession ai' a basketball game. I notice, too, that they're always enthusiastic about letting me help - 'too enthusiastic! It's a well organized group tor which Miss Jane Schoonmaker is responsible. Besides, she has the best-tooting whistle! Games are won and lost at the net. PAGE 85 Intramurals Watch the birdie! Our noon hour intramurals turned out to be very successful this year. We started the year off with a volley tournament in both fourth and fifth hour. Pete Joy's team breezed through thefr fourth hour games to win the championship, while Tom Gerner's fifth hour championship squad was closely followed by Dick Puklin's bunch. fLeftl Sitting: Hargis, Farren. Rolin Hurlbut's aggregation who had thirteen wins took filth hour honors with Pete Joy's team again taking fourth hour championship with lilteen wins and three losses. Pete's team consisted of Ronny Farren, Wayne Halling, Ted Landgrai, John Hargus, Kenny Sempstrote, while Hurlbut had Frank Krezminski, Larry Youngren, Tom Gerner, Dick Morgan. and Richard Darby. Coach Lew Stephens who is in charge of intramurals finished the year with an Aerial Darts Tournament. Some follow-through you've got Come now, boys, you can't all have it. there, Marilyn.
