Whether we speak German, Latin, or Spanish, we still are proud to be Americans! The many Heils heard at the German students' Christmas party were the cheery greetings of a free people. Miss Meyer is the sole teacher of German. Under the energetic leadership of Galen Gerber, president, the Latin Club, again sponsored a successful Roman banquet. The menu was printed in Latin on paper rolled like the ancient Roman scrolls. The Latin magistrae here at Thomas Jones were Miss Boyce and Miss Debruine. Under the supervision of Senora Slater, the Spanish Club presented a very lively Pan American program. The Spanish dances were directed by Miss Adams. After the refreshments, the singing of Spanish songs was most liked by club members. SPANISH CLUB First Row: Elvina Biever, Margaret Janecek. Mary Dentice, Rose Kalashian, Lydia Smarelli. And as the songs and recitations, Came through the open doorg A tardy boy crept slowly in And was j. Emerson sore! Where did you come from, sir? he said. Oh the wind has blown me in, I'm not so sure about the time, When does this class begin? Say you, sit down there, And you'd better get to work! For in my class, you see, young man, The students never shirk! The crew was kept busy by the constant calling for curtain, lights, and screen. Nor did it draw back the curtain on any stage production primed with political propaganda, as is so common in Europe. Also, like so many of our fine citizens, the library helpers, in Miss Davis's charge, were among the unsung heroes in the school. Though they were always busy as bees, they worked so quietly we scarcely knew that they were about. Their constant efficiency kept the books of truth and knowledge in our library, always in good shape and quickly accessible. LIBRARY I-IELPERS First Row: Eleanor Strobel, Miss Davis, Rosemary Fusso. The Mecca theme for this year was a noble one, and in these troublesome times, possible only in our United States. Th annual Christmas program presented by the club consisted of a movie of Dickens' famed A Christmas Car- ol. The girls enjoyed wholehearted fun when they attended :1 Kid's Party in the gym March 28. Each Meccaite dressed like a little girl was accompanied by a girl dressed as a little boy. Lollypops and children's games were the order of the night. Anita Ziegenhagen, president of the club, reigned as queen at the Mecca Easter promenade. The formals, school clothes, and date apparel were modeled by teachers and girls from Mecca. Number 13 had no fears for the Hi-Y, for the club's thirteenth annual Minstrel and Vaudeville show was another success. Mr. Werner organized and directed a program that offered comedy, tragedy, fun, and seriousness. The interlocutors were john Gustafson and Ted Barr, while the black endmen were Ray David-- son, Charles Bennett, Milton Krueger, Bob Hankel, Bill Glye, and Bob Babick. Among the guest speakers at the Hi-Y this past year were members of the Milwaukee Chiefs, Walter Mehl, Chuck Fenske, and many others. The boys were active in outside work. HI-Y van, Frank Chudy. In the singles tournament, Dorothy Markey defeated Emily Davies to successfully defend her last year's singles title. The interclass volleyball tournament drew a total of 65 girls from the gym classes.
