Wm! , , Getting something out of nothing, T was the problem that Coach Neil Gonyo had to contend with when the l939-l94U basketball season started. l-le had two lettermen back, Ken Olson and Bud King. The rest of his sauad had to be filled in with inexperienced players, The matter was not improved wlien pre-season standings were released, and the Bulldogs were an unanimous choice for the cellar position. The crying towels were brought out and the expression on the coach's face was anything but cheerful After the first two games, the doubt was all gone from Coach Gonyofs mind, and he knew that even if he didn't have the most polished team in the Suburban League, he did have the team with the most fight. The Allisrnen dropped out of first place when they were defeated by Shorewood 24 to 12. They would not be denied though, and regained the first rung by virtue of two spectacular victories over West Milwaukee and Whitefish Bay. After these two victories, Ken Olson, outstanding man on the Allis team as well as in the Suburban League graduated and West Allis hopes again sagged The team fought back twice as hard and managed to cling to first place for part of the second round but the loss of Ken Olson proved too great and the Bulldogs began to slip The Allismen lost several two point games and at the end of the season were lodged in third place This season has been the best for the West Allis Basketball team in eight years and a record that every fan should be proud of BASKETBALL fVarsityl First Bow Andy Muhar Al Camillo Paul Cincotta Bob Pavlovich George Ne kich Quinten Brunette Second Bow Mgr lack Vari Veghel Fred Benneth Coach Gonyo Al Pintar M Francis Gronowski Third Bow Pat Drummond LeRoy Suwal ki Pete Han Bobert Perthel iid K g Ioe oe qu All JCC Tl C J Bc J Lyi I R L J , . 5 f .Q T-W 'L ' - -.
